Holy poo poo I just won the car repair lottery.

A couple of weeks ago I dropped my 2015 5.0 Genesis off because it thought it was overheating even though there were no signs to that effect. They replaced the main coolant sensor but the display has still been intermittent since then randomly complaining about overheating. Took it back in today and just got the call. Apparently the ECU is only sending 3.3v on that sensor wire instead of 5V so the entire ECU needs to be replaced. There is one ECU left in north america and they put the order in.

Even though I am at 64k mi they are still going to cover it under the powertrain warranty. It would be $2000 otherwise.

Never seen or driven one but I've watched some videos about it and similar cars out of interest recently. Seems like it's basically the same platform as the Kia Stinger with better soundproofing? The one thing about it that seemed like it would be a deal-breaker for me was the lack of a 'manual' mode for the gearbox, you can use the paddles to manually force a gear change but it will always revert back to auto every time you stop and start moving again. I suppose for a lot of people that would be no big deal but having lived with a DSG car that I've exclusively driven in 'manual' mode for 8 years and wanting a bit more of a sporty experience I'm sure that would drive me insane.

I drove a V6 G70 last year, and if I had any sort of patience, I would've waited another year for V6 G70s to drop under $30K. The chassis is there with the G70 in a way it wasn't with previous Hyundai vehicles. It can put the power down, and the body control is great. The only bad things I have to say about the G70 are that the trunk sucks, and Hyundai dealers are very hit-and-miss.

First understand whether you can influence the investment profile of your retirement account. Depending on where you are, it could be anywhere from a simple risk profile to actually buying specific bonds and shares with a part of your balance.

This can often be at a tax advantage.

Speaking of, I should really contact a financial advisor and get at least a couple of hours of sparring. Between two incomes, a mortgage, two retirement accounts and a substantial marginal income tax rate, that person could quickly earn back their fee.

Anyone have tips on finding a good one. We've talked about finding one and my insurance agent was supposed to be getting me contact info for his but I haven't heard anything in a month. We'll be back to two incomes in a year and a half, have some assets and aren't sure if it makes sense to pay off the mortgage. The mortgage chat a couple pages ago made me start thinking about it again.

I just started talking to a big name investment company because my parents have an account with them, so there's a "family" overlay of all the accounts. That allows me to use their services, which is nice. I got a preliminary plan from them that was a 61 page pdf (!!!). They misinterpreted some of the parameters we gave them, and we weren't super clear in our first phone contact, so we're waiting for a re-do.

Fees are 1%/yr. I'm waiting to see final proposals before deciding whether or not to go with them.

Good luck on the surgery.

On the financial advisor front, make sure you know if the place you're talking to is a fiduciary or not to know where their allegiances lie. From my understanding, someone with a fiduciary duty to you (meaning that their money-earning focus is on you) will cost more up front, but not always have the continual fees. A regular investment company will just take your stuff and lump it in with all their other investments and rely on past performance to encourage future co-operation.

On the mortgage front, I told the guy that we're 6 years into a 15 year mortgage at 2.875% paying off at a 9 year rate, and he immediately suggested investing instead of paying down the mortgage.

As I look at the first part of this post, it hit me how extraordinarily privileged I am. I have an in with a big investment company, and I characterized that as "nice." And that's what it is, not life-changing, but avoids some hassle finding a place. But that would be a game changer for some people.

I am not a financial advisor.

Ok so easiest thing is to open a margin account with someone like TD, Etrade, Swarb etc… not an app, not some yolo WSB bullshit. Put your money in and buy some broad based index ETF, those offered by vanguard such as VTI are good bets. Then leave it the gently caress alone apart from adding more money to buy more stuff over time. Don’t sell anything for at least 12 months so you get long term capital gains tax rather than short term treating it as income and that is about it.

When you want to start using it for income sell some and buy some dividend stocks/ETFs that should produce the income you need and let the rest of your portfolio continue to grow.

You won’t be all jet packs and butlers in a year but it is a reliable way to get to gently caress you money*

1% isn't great. Keep in mind that is almost certainly on top of the built in fees in any fairly hi-priced funds they'd like to get you into. They make commission on all that and you are left paying the bill, regardless if it makes you money or not.

Personally, I believe the way to go is passive with a small basket of index funds and just let it go. Some funds are even very well diversified and it's not crazy just to dump everything in 1 diversified fund.

Be cautious of the financial "advisor" - they don't all have a fiduciary duty to you, many have shockingly little education and they get paid whether they do a good job or not.

Yeah..

Other stuff...

Took a reverse hook kick to the head in sparring last night by a virtual physical clone of me... 5'11 200+lb dude.

First time in a while I've had my bell rung really well. Did not go down or anything like that but had to walk it off. I remember looking at my blue gloves immediately afterwards... and they looked green.

I was in a group of heavyweights and all were bb+ except me. My primary instructors and master of the club (all of us are close) were right there and all went :eyepop: holy poo poo are you OK? Dude who did it is a very good friend and felt awful. But I totally take the blame for it, I lowered my guard for a punch, which never made it. Made a joke of getting a paddle tattooed on my face.

Interestingly enough, I have an appt with a concussion specialist this afternoon about my vertigo. Good timing!

Literally the best advice. The first post of the long term thread is better and more concise than anything posted elsewhere. You can also look into ESG (environmental, social, and governance) funds, which reward companies with better ethics than normal, and can leverage their holdings to encourage companies to change. There's several big players in this market with low expense ratios and portfolio types. However, check their holdings, as many are tech-heavy, including socially-dubious picks like Facebook and Amazon.
