We will have systemic racism as long as we have capitalism creating material inequalities for regular folks. Everything else will just be a bandaid.

I honestly hated the second episode a lot more than the first. Rosa was perfect, but the A plot of Jake pulling a parent trap and actually having it work was ghastly. Like who the gently caress thinks this poo poo is wholesome? It was nearly as bad as Admiral Peralta, which is by far the worst episode of the show. I certainly hope they're not gonna limit the ACAB episodes to just the premier and the finale. Yes, it wasn't the greatest way to send the message, if there even is a good way for them to do so, but they have a big platform. Let these characters get worn down by having to acknowledge what they're a part of, even if it comes at the cost of making fewer funny jokes. There's no way to strike the right balance, but I'd rather they say it loud than they say it just right. Rupert Buttermilk posted:Either Hitchcock and Scully win, or no one wins. I'm pretty sure Scully is already the heist grand champion. They started doing the math at the end of Walloweaster, but never followed through. Scully also assisted in the first two heists and helped Amy in the third one. All the show has to do is acknowledge it. ShakeZula posted:The Rosa plot is the most egregious of all those to me, because while the others aren't great they do at least feel like they're in character. With Rosa, it feels like the writers wanted to make somebody quit and become a PI, and hers was the character that fit best (not least because I imagine her whole "emotionless badass cop with minimal concern for suspects' feelings" persona was a tough fit in the new paradigm). This is also why they basically made her into a completely different character in the second episode. This is kind of an odd take to me, because even ignoring what I know of Stephanie Beatriz, Rosa is the obvious candidate for being the first to go. Who else would be the first to quit?

To be clear, not arguing against APIAB, but if someone were to ask me "why do Private Investigators suck as much or nearly as much as cops" I couldn't rattle off a bunch of reasons why off the top like I could if someone asked why cops are bad. My main memories of PIs are the douchebag Wolf (huge rear end in a top hat) from Nathan For You and Dick Tracy (yellow) edit: Oh yeah and the one from Columbo who was big into investigating infidelity and then blackmailing the cheater to not tell, which is one of the things halfass google brought up.

Private investigators have been used to do all the same things police detectives do except with even less regulation and for profit. Instead of thinking of Dick Tracy you should think of the Pinkertons, who have been used historically to bust the heads of labor activists. They're also the model of what would actually replace the police if you defunded or abolished them without, like, having a simultaneous communist revolution.

It's worse than that, Warren Beatty personally owns the rights to all Dick Tracy film and television adaptations and is sitting on them until he dies because he demands to play Dick Tracy and refuses to let anyone else play the part. He, in fact, technically already filmed a sequel to Dick Tracy in order to fulfill certain legal obligations required to keep the rights; it took the form of a 2011 made for TV interview with Leonard Maltin in winch a 74 year old Warren Beatty reprises his role. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdFbiRK-UaY Old Kentucky Shark fucked around with this message at 16:38 on Aug 18, 2021 |

Oh my god the way they treat him like some big shot is hilarious and his hollywood attitude is really bizarre. I legitimately only remember dick tracy as some yellow coat guy and if not for yellow being the best colour, can't think of why he'd be remembered at all. Has Warren ever been in anything still worth watching in 2021, quick look at his filmography, nothing remotely catches my eye.

Honestly if you ever have a few afternoons to kill, read through at least a few volumes of Dick Tracy strips. If you can make it a little ways it starts getting increasingly more implausible, bizarre, and straight-up sci-fi.

I'm late but I'm sympathetic to the show on its clunky handling of things. I'm not sure what having everyone quit the force would accomplish. Its not like it would be remotely realistic and just seems to serve to try and make people with an emotional attachment to the characters be able to ignore the issue. so they tried to address it. I like the idea that Rosa decided to quit and become what seems to amount to be a public servant more than a traditional PI. It comes out of nowhere but it feels right for her and is reasonable to accept she struggled for a year over it. I liked Jake's struggle with the realization that he's part of the problem despite his good intentions and not knowing what the right thing to do is. I liked Holt just being personally affected by everything. I like the villain of the system getting a human form that calmly explains how stacked the deck is with a cold indifference to the morality of it. The racist cop is easy, the cold rational system is the problem. I like that the episode just ended with Rosa and Jake being awkward and not knowing where to go. All the Boyle/Terry stuff was clumsy as hell. I dunno. Its well intentioned, its clumsy. I'm not sure what the solution is. Like I said, having everyone quit so they can be wacky without being cops feels worse than not trying. Cancelling the show also accomplishes nothing since there's dozens of cops shows on that don't care about trying. Completely transforming the show to tackles the issue more robustly makes the characters a casualty and what's the point of a final season if not to have one last run with the characters? I dunno. There doesn't seem like a very good option available and they seem to be trying their best. STAC Goat fucked around with this message at 20:05 on Aug 19, 2021 |
