I've met him briefly and listened to him speak when the convention I volunteer at hosted him as Author Guest Of Honor. He was interesting (in a good way,) and seemed to be a decent person, genuinely concerned about such things. Of course it's hyperbole to an extent, but not so far as to be completely unbelievable.

Market opportunity. Now just build it "smart" for the masses, plus some marketing that makes owners feel they now live a superior lifestyle than others. Don't forget the planned obsolescence for the kicker! That yacht ain't gonna grow a helipad by itself, yanow?

Edit: Also somewhere in there you became what you hate and set out to prevent in the first place. Data is the one ring, no mount doom to cast it however.

I use my Samsung smart TV as my primary device for streaming Netflix and stuff. The only problem is that the thing is a little buggy and will reset the sound every few days so that it comes out of the onboard speakers instead of my soundbar. And sometimes it will turn on my PS4 when it switches to "game mode". I actually like the crappy Samsung TV channel program because they have Rifftrax as a channel and it's the perfect background noise

Of course, the thing has a million features that I won't use, but I don't see how it's much different than the Apple TV that was plugged into our old "dumb" TV

We have an early Samsung 4k smart TV as our main TV. Most of the apps on it either don't work anymore, or are so slow that they're pointless (Plex takes about 10 minutes to load, about a minute to respond to each button press... Netflix is chopping as hell even without 4k now, etc), so it has a Roku 4k hooked up to it. And an antenna.

Gotta say, the built in TV guide for the over the air stuff is pretty neat, I didn't expect it to have that. It's still a bit sluggish, but it's better than blindly flipping channels. The built in clock sometimes jumps by an hour in either direction though, which obviously throws off the guide by a lot.

Pihole can’t block Youtube ads for a much simpler reason, the ads are served from the same servers as the video you’re trying to watch. Block them with DNS and you can’t watch anything at all.

Smart TV and amazon/android/apple/roku TV dongle pro tip: bring them with you when you travel or if you're going to spend some time in the hospital, also bring a cheap universal remote. We brought our fire stick to the hospital and it made extended stays a lot more bearable when you had something other than lovely daytime tv to watch. It also saves you from forgetting to log out of the smart tv at the airbnb.

I looked at a pihole last summer but never followed up on it, maybe I'll add that to the winter project list. On the other hand if it doesn't block youtube ads I'm not sure it's worth the time.

Aside from ads, you can also use it to block tracking and analytics, if it's on a separate DNS domain, you can block it. Including in apps etc. where you can't use an adblocking plugin.

Your choice of block list determines how restrictive you want it to be.

Alternatively, use nextdns.io, it's basically a cloud-based pi-hole. AdGuard is another option. I use a pi-hole at home, and nextdns on my phone, when I'm out in the world.

One of the best meals we had on a recent vacation was a Five Guys burger at the Atlanta airport, but that may have been a case of hunger being the best spice as much as anything else. I will say the guy at the counter was way nicer and more chill than anybody has a right to expect a person working a fast food job in an airport with a constant 500 yard line of customers to be.

A good burger transcends all.

I am under no illusions that Whataburger is life changing but after a long drive, or days at the beach eating seafood grabbing a big bag of burgers and onion rings there has always been great. Luckily it’s just far enough away that it will be an every few months experience still.

We have a five guys in town it was good when it opened and went…might take the kids again this weekend

Five Guys is good because they are consistent across the board. Yes a bit expensive but who cares, still way better than anything cheaper.

The best cheaper option is making your own.

Over here people often scoff at the prices of Five guys but will happily go to a pub and order an incredibly mediocre burger and fries for the same money if not more and then pretend like they didn't just get ripped off.

It was a decent value on a layover even at $11 with the airport markup because they gave you unlimited free refills, self-service. Also better value if you like all the fixings since they charge you the same whether you want them or not. If you're a 'meat and cheese only' guy it would be a bit of a rip.

And then pay a tip on top of that too.

There are a few burger places around here that require you being waited on, chains like Red Robin (horrible), other "burger pubs" as well and by the time you get your bill and tip you could have gone to five guys twice and gotten a much better burger and WAY better fries.

The worst burger I ever had was a White Castle vending machine burger at a Greyhound bus station somewhere between Kansas and Indiana, which does go some way toward disproving the 'hunger = best spice' hypothesis. There was no amount of hunger-spice in the world that could make that thing good.

See, the problem with McDonald's and other fast food places is they are not very consistent tho, at least not here. The quality of a Big Mac can vary between store to store, and there are some stores that are so bad that you avoid them completely. Whether it's lovely management, employees, who knows, but I've been to many different five guys across the state and they have all been right on par. Taco Bell is another one that is very consistent through all their stores.

I'm not trying to say five guys is great, but overall I like it because I know what I'm gonna get consistently. Still looking for that GREAT burger place but haven't found it yet.

Five guys is one of the only fast food places where I can get a decent meal that's gluten free, dairy free, and HFCS free, so they're basically my favorite now. The price is annoying compared to McDonald's or something, but for the quality and volume of food you get from it, it's fair
