You can turn on God Mode any time you want in the settings I'm pretty sure if you feel like you're hitting a wall. If you have a favourite weapon and refuse to engage with the others then you can just eke out 10 wins that way. Don't even need to touch the Heat system if you don't want to. You wouldn't get the little epilogue but you'd see the credits roll. Something I noticed when I saw a friend play was that he actually played extremely slowly, just staying put with ranged weapons and playing it safe. Which is nutso to me, the game is clearly crying out to be played aggressively with you dashing all over the place as fast as possible. Playing with Hermes Feather on is basically the ideal way to play, especially with another dodge weapon like the fists.

I'm definitely playing with God Mode on because I knew going in that my patience with punishing games is... not great. I straight up do not enjoy playing games where the difficulty is set to "you're gonna suffer" and this is why I frequently can't engage with roguelikes, because that's a trait of the genre. I also very rarely put difficulty settings past normal. Judge me. I'm liking how the story in Hades is developing, I like the characters, the combat is fun. I really wanted to play it because I enjoy mythology, but knowing about God Mode is probably why I actually bought it, rather than deciding it was going to be like my experience with Dark Souls or Bloodborne, where I die eight times in the same spot early on and then give up forever.

And a majority of its associated Hammers just make the bow better at what it does. You just need good timing and positioning, and be fine with being rooted to the ground for a half second. I hear good things about the Chiron upgrade but Hera shreds bosses with any decent cast. It's about as safe as you can be without the shield. The shield chumps the last boss since he can't hit through it for poo poo.

I actually had sort of the opposite problem with weapons, though: I follow the Darkness Thirst and try to use every weapon... but the only one I can reliably get somewhere with is a specific shield build (Zeus aspect, Zeus special, Athena dash and revenge deflect, then however many Ares boons it takes until I get the Ares/Zeus duo buff). Everything else is a total toss-up; I won with the spear once, but can never get close with that one otherwise. Hell, even with the shield, sometimes the game will just go 'yeah gently caress you, you don't get half your game plan this time, have Poseidon knockbacks that either do nothing or actively hinder your best damage strategy'. Maybe a problem is that I recgonize that the game wants me to go rush-in violence, but I'm bad at it. I take too many glancing blows and eventually get taken down by a thousand cuts thanks to the lack of reliable healing. Which is actually why I consider Elysium easier than the Temple of Styx: at least Patroclus will help me out.

The thing I got mad about in Hades was spending a week pushing through to finally beat it only to find that it's not the actual end, and I apparently have to get through it ten times to get to the final ending? I know replayability is a thing for this kind of game, but that just seems a bit absurd. I feel like folks who massively replay this stuff are gonna do it regardless, but I'm probably just never gonna get there at the rate I'll replay it and with my skill disappearing between times. e: whoops this isn't the complainy thread, I saw the number of words about Hades and assumed

There's a mirror upgrade called Privileged Status that gives you +40% damage at max against anything that's affected by two statuses. And pretty much every god except Artemis and Hermes either inflicts a status with their boons or has a secondary boon that makes it so they do (like Poseidon can make it so knockback boons also inflict Rupture, and Athena can make it so deflection attacks inflict Exposed, etc). It's not too difficult to get a build that has at least two debuffs and that alone will help get your damage way up, especially on bosses. Also there's the mirror upgrade that gives you +50% damage to enemies that have a bloodstone stuck in them. And, don't overlook Poseidon. Knockback can be really dope against regular enemies. Like you can have the Poseidon dash and constantly keep slamming an enemy into a wall for bonus damage while tearing them apart with a melee weapon in the meantime and absolutely obliterate them. Surprisingly effective with fists if you can get the positioning right I was really grateful for the fated list of minor prophecies because it forces you to try new things and you can discover that you're really underestimating some abilities. Like, there's never a god that I'm disappointed to encounter. They all have something I can work into an effective strategy

I have found very few builds which can dish out the necessary damage to deal with +10 heat in there. The machine gun/grenade launcher thing works well. If you can swing the rocket launcher upgrade and triple shot with it, it's pretty much easy mode assuming you can get a couple Chaos/Artemis power-ups to boost the damage a bit. I have rarely had issues with Styx unless you get super unlucky and have to do all 5-6 chambers. Plus you get a heal at the end without having to fight the boss and a ton of cash for last-minute upgrades. quote:there's never a god that I'm disappointed to encounter Aphrodite's stuff is pretty weak except for her insane call ability that does a metric fuckton of damage along with a 7 second charm that actually works on some bosses Also don't sleep on turning up the heat especially the "extreme measures" thing that remixes the boss fights. It genuinely feels like it's set up so that a good run has to do a longer Styx, so I get bled dry if I get out of Theseus and Asterius in pretty good shape. I think a big part of roguelikes is generally being able to know what you're going up against in a given run, so that even with random items you can start preparing for what you know is coming and how long you need to last. But Styx just... goes for as long as it wants to. Sure, I get money, but what the gently caress am I gonna be spending it on, given that by the time I get to Styx I have most of what I need in terms of boons, all I really need is the security of health--which Styx is going to drain me of, and which doesn't give guaranteed ways to rejuvenate stuff like Death Defiances.

By the time you get to Styx, you'll likely have a build that will obliterate all the little chambers though. The only tough part is the final rooms in each chamber that are filled with poison/blade trap spam.

Yeah, I figured out pretty quickly that trying to melee the final boss was a risky strategy at best. He has very few windows where you can get in, hit him and dodge away. His swing arcs are incredibly wide, especially in his 2nd phase so if you don’t have some sort of mobility upgrade from Hermes, one screw up will cost you quite a bit. I usually use something like a spell or ranged attacks while constantly running away to whittle down his health and take melee shots only when I’m sure it’s safe. I think that’s the main reason I hate the sword weapon. You can have a fantastic melee build that will get you all the way to the final boss and he’ll just wreck you since he’s immune to knock back and hit stun. The only way I was able to ever beat him with the sword was to use aspect of Poseidon and go full caster build which is incredibly luck-dependent in the early game - because you aren’t getting through Elysium with a cast build unless you’re really racking up damage - and the set of boons you need are fairly specific (exit wounds, casting speed, one of the bigger “nuke” spells etc). I haven’t tried out excalibur yet but it looks kinda promising. Speaking of which, I’ve unlocked most of the hidden weapon aspects except for the machine gun and the fists. I have both upgraded to at least level 4 in one aspect with another at at least level 2 but haven’t had anyone give me the key phrase for either. Zeus and Artemis both commented on the gun but neither did anything with it. Am I doing something wrong or is it just one of those “keep playing and it’ll eventually happen” things? Edit: also if you’re having trouble with the final boss, Eurydice’s keepsake is incredibly useful for both learning his attack patterns and staying alive. I usually run Persephone’s for the first 3 levels and then switch to Eurydice for Styx. Frank Frank has a new favorite as of 12:13 on Sep 10, 2021 |

The gun needs to be shown to Zeus, which you can rig for; all you should really need to do there is have spent five titan blood into the gun, so presuming you've done that... just keep going in with Zeus' trinket and the gun?

You can definitely melee the final boss. Anytime he appears after being invisible, you just have to wait for him to do whatever move he’s doing then smack him around. Also if you see that big circle appear you know he’s gonna do his wide dashing swing so you can just dash through him so you’re on the other side of where he’s going. The timing is important but if you have any dash or movement boosts it gets really easy Honestly sometimes Theseus is the harder boss just because of his shield and crazy AoE god boons. I tried clearing the game the other day with Stubborn Defiance and ended up just barely beating Theseus with 20hp left. My hands were shaking like crazy because I came in with low health and burned my defiance while Asterius was still alive and since I was using the spear and only had trippy shot as my cast I was basically just lobbing bombs at him while praying I could avoid the god attacks since one mistimed dodge against his attacks would’ve ended me. Hades after that was a cinch. Didn’t even need my defiance

Theseus can be a pain - it totally depends on what god he calls. Some are just horrific (Zeus, Dionysus). Others not so bad. I just had the funniest run ive had so far. I got the crystal beam Demeter cast early on and then like, every single boon to buff it somehow: Chaos +cast damage Crystal Beam Glacial Glare Pressure Points Battle Rage Deadly Flourish (barely used lol) Greatest Reflex Hunters Mark Demeter's Aid - which builds CRAZY fast with the doom beams active Drunken Dash Strong Drink Crystal Clarity (duo that makes the beams hit harder and last longer) Urge to Kill Positive Outlook Arctic Blast Flurry Cast Cruel Thrust and Double Nova (barely used again) I’d just walk into a room, drop all 3 death laser turrets and everything would instantly melt. I didn’t actually have to do anything else. Theseus and the bull melted almost instantly. Theseus took a little more time due to his shield but it was still a joke. Hades went down without even touching my acorn. Aspect of Poseidon/sword. Hilariously, I knew the build I was going for but asphodel was rough because of a +60% enemy spawn chaos thing and I lost 2 respawns. Shortly after, I got the laser tracking thing and it was all over. Edit: wow ok the Lucifer aspect is super disappointing. I turned the difficulty way down to just run buck wild with it and it’s so slow and lovely I just got fed up and let myself die in Styx. Double Edit: Also just FYI - you don't have to be wielding the weapon to get the unlocking phrase from Zeus. I was using the fists and he gave it to me anyway. Almost all levels have some kind of infrastructure in it, such as buildings, bridges, fences, and whatnot, and all of it is destructible. The game doesn't penalize you at all for your collateral damage, which is good, because you're going to be causing a lot of it. My favorite thing is when a mission is in the middle of a city, taking a step back once the mission is almost over and seeing most of it reduced to rubble, so you could protect the earth from being invaded. EDF 4.1 and 5 is such dumb fun and I can't recommend it enough. Stay away from Iron Rain and World Brothers, if you're looking to jump into the series. With IR, they tried to make it more serious and it kinda falls flat, both in story and gameplay, and WB is voxel EDF, but is sadly mediocre.
