i'm really glad that the monitor megathread convinced me to get a high-refresh monitor because WOW it is such a difference. even just in everyday use. i am vastly more precise with graphics software and the screen just feels smooth and slippery and responsive in a way i didn't know was possible.

i will take high refresh rate over super resolution (assuming the fast monitor has IPS color quality) every time now.

same, my monitor upgrade later this year is from 240hz tn to 360hz ips since im content with 1080p 25” for gaming

overwatch has longer games too, referencing earlier convo. it’s just that stalemate stuff on 2cp feels not too fun to a lot of people, and other modes provide better snowball potential to an extent

this is an incredibly mockable position but one of my favorite things to watch in the watch-somebody-else-play arena is daoc fight footage. It only makes any sense if you're an avid player of the game (which i am no longer, i played last year but they shut my good free server down and I won't play live because it's a nightmare) but i just love large scale MMO battles

yeh, 3070 on 1080p with low settings allows me to push certain simpler-looking games quite far. that said, transition from 144 to 240 was way less apparent than from 60 to 144, and i expect 240 to 360 feel even less impactful both intrinsically, and because there are even fewer games which i can consistently drive at that speed. while there are some advantages to having higher refresh rate even if you’re not saturating it, this is mostly a “i just want a nice thing” purchase for me

vfr flying out in the boonies is 1000% more fun than taking an airbus from dallas to cleveland on an ifr plan but the latter is extremely popular among the civ sim crowd for some reason. i don't get it at all.

very interesting. I will confess that my ryzen build is one hundred percent vanity toy, i was on a 4670 and happy with everything it did, so i get the 'nice to have but not essential' thing very much. At any rate, i broke 3k USD on this build after the gpu and bigram and everything, and it'll probably be the last desktop I build for 6-8 years so i don't really feel hosed up about it. it's so goddamned fast. i was moving my games around at 3 GB (big b) per second yesterday and it's just hard to grasp how fast these things are now.

i fly fs2020 with an xbox gamepad more than all my fancy hardware. it's a great chill out and look at stuff game. and in civilian sims you have plenty of time to click things in the cockpit, so you don't need a HOTAS anyway.

indeed, i mostly use a 360 controller or a ps4. it was forever before i settled on a control scheme that worked for me, with all the controls you want quick, simple access to. editing the key mapping and actually just generally the ui leaves much to be desired

2cp (assault) is the worst mode and should not be in the game imo

control (center capture point, both teams equal distance) is the best mode, escort (payload) and hybrid (1cp and then payload) are pretty good

bespoke, made-to-order hotas setup from flightsim specialty workshops is going to cost you like $2k tops, high end off the shelf stuff - in the 300-1000 range. things you should actually buy when getting into serious flyings games - a gamepad with good analog sticks or a logitech extreme 3d joystick. i used to play pvp ww2 flight simulators and would clap skylords with equipment above my then-net worth with a $60 logitech joystick
