This is the best option at this point if you're uneasy about the state of the beta. Pre-orders will get the game a week before launch, so you could pre-order then after learning what the game will actually launch with instead of basing your opinion on this beta or hoping it will be improved. So if you want the pre-order bonuses you have nothing to lose by doing that.

I made a post on Reddit saying this same thing: cancel your pre-order and wait for the week before launch to see if the beta is fixed, and it was deleted by mods 10 minutes later after being 90% up voted.

It's way more fun than BF1/BF5 so it has that going for it. Uglier than those two, but a lot more fun to play.

Tank handles like rear end. Gunplay feels better. I don't get killed by invisible people like in BF5.

Recoilless needs some drop though, that thing zings armor from across the map no problem.

Yeah, but all the people who do buy it will be posting reviews and clips and breakdowns and all sorts of comments on YouTube and Reddit and even here, and also steam reviews. So you can see if DICE actually fixed the things you hoped would be fixed, or if Portal somehow makes it worth it.

I also just do not like how directionless it is. It's just people running randomly to points and no way as far as I can tell as an SL to direct your squad like other BF games. No one heals, no one drops ammo, barely any revives, pretty disappointing.

To be fair, an extremely important factor here is the broken squad functionality. There is no way to reliably join a squad and no ingame way whatsoever to join, change or leave one. And you can't pick a server.
As such coordinating is basically a crapshoot that is miles away from a feature. So don't judge it based on what you see in this beta.

You can certainly set squad direction to a point as a squad leader. I did it multiple times and it highlights the point in green just like past games. You need a clear line of sight to the point though, which hopefully will be fixed.

The best part of the game is when it shows up and the whole server runs toward it and flies around it for ten minutes. I watched Levelcap talk about the game and he thought it made for bad gameplay, but I think it's hilarious when it happens.

It's definitely missing some effects that BFV and even BF4 have, like some of the water effects and god rays.

Biggest visible change is how bright and glowy all the tracers and missile trails are. It may be less realistic but seems like it will be good for gameplay.

I can't figure out the squad directions. Sometimes I can set them and sometimes nothing happens only a minute later in the same squad. I noticed that one of the directions I set had like three dots above it when I set the marker, do those dots stand for other players on the point? Other people in my squad that set the same direction? The whole system seems dysfunction. Why the gently caress did they throw out the perfectly usable system from previous games?

Also I'm missing the call-in squad points and fortifications from Battlefield V. At least the fortifications gave you something to do when you defended a point.

After putting a good 5ish hour into this beta my opinion has really soured. I'll write up more later, but I think I'm going to refund for now and come back well after launch.

This is just confirmation bias writ large. Large amounts of *vocal* people are disappointed, that doesn't mean the majority of players are. I'm also not saying that isn't true though, just that the modern social media culture is to get real mad about something in media that isn't perfect and yell about it to anyone who will listen. There is plenty of stuff that if you judged by the social media outcry you would be sure was a flop nobody likes but in truth is immensely popular and loved.

Case in point:

Trump posted:

"Conceptual alpha build" is hyperbolic in the extreme if you've ever actually played a conceptual alpha build. I'm not denying there isn't a lot of jank, but this isn't that far off from any other battlefield beta that went on to do well.

Yeah, can attest to this. The 128 player cap really did me in most of all though. It is just chaos everywhere and impossible to get some kind of team cohesion. It felt more like a futuristic COD ground war match than battlefield. (which is bad IMHO)

Now that I think about it, I think we're getting the opposite of Battlefield V. Battlefield V had a battle royal mode in a game designed and balanced around Conquest and Operations. What we're getting is a game designed around Battle Royal, with Conquest and Operations shoe horned in. Here are the things that make me feel like Battlefield 2042 is designed from the ground up as a battle royal:

  • No classes, instead you choose your gadget. Like an equipment item you'd pick up during a Battle Royal.
  • Can use any weapon, and pick up any weapon at any time.
  • Can customize your weapon at any time without respawning.
  • Specialists
  • Hot dropping vehicles
  • Random civilian cars you can pick up along the map
  • Players you kill drop ammunition
  • Squad members can revive each other no matter what they have equipped
  • Fast, sliding, movement system
  • 100+ max player counts
  • Absolutely massive, open, quickly traversable maps
  • Barely any faction identity

There's probably more that I'm missing.

It's okay if some people don't like the game, there are legit issues with this build, and some are certainly going to carry over to the full game, like specialists which may result in people not playing as team based as other BF games. Other things like menus being really bad to the point you can't spawn a vehicle half the time makes it so you have to walk 600m to the next point. Don't take the game criticism personally, you can still buy and play the game and have fun.

I'm really enjoying the beta overall. It's not perfect, but I didn't expect it to be. While I still think it'd be better with actual classes than the goofy specialist system I'll just have to adapt to this new system. The decision to limit squads to 4 players is questionable. I think it'd be better at 5 or 6 so you can have a robust squad that can react to nearly any threat (ideally). The grappling hook is cool, but I honestly prefer running with the recon perk and using my drone to spot enemies for my team assaulting a point or play defense as an engineer. The ability for anyone to carry wiz-balls is pretty sweet and I find it way more useful than grenades. For the most part I haven't found rocket spam to be all that bad and have had pretty good luck surviving in vehicles. I'm interested to see how the game turns out in November. I'm having a blast so far, and the portal thing looks like a hell of a lot of fun.

There are also things that were in V but not in 2042. They probably had a list of things they could implement and prioritized the ones that suited Battle Royal gameplay the most. For example, seeing your squadmate in 3rd person while respawning is not in 2042, because that feature wouldn't be very useful in Battle Royal since you don't respawn in Battle Royal (at least in that manner).

And neither is Hunt Showdown, but it's really close.
