kinda weird as the games have almost nothing in common, but as the one person in the world coming from angle of "hasn't played DUSK but has played golden light," I'll just throw out a Game Awareness Post for Golden Light here. it's one of the most inscrutable things I've ever touched, kind of bullshit sometimes, and still the most captivating first person roguelite I've played. out of all the roguelites I've played it's the one that comes the closest to capturing the feel of an actual roguelike, where it's not clear what anything does, what's friendly and what will try to kill you, what kinds of tricks you can use to get an edge, when to fight and when to run, what good play even looks like, etc. I'm not gonna categorically recommend it or anything, because I mean fuckin' look at it, only you can say whether it might be your thing or not, but I've enjoyed what I've played of it more than expected. I think I'm about halfway to the end?

Those screenshots were enough for me to wishlist it at least. “You hate this note” made me laugh.

Have you heard of Fermat's principle?
Since people seemed interested (and so was I) in Killsquad I picked it up and gave it a few hours to see what it's like. I haven't hit endgame or anything like that, but here's my impressions so far:

The Good:
*Pretty fun all-around: kind of like a cross-breed of Warframe but top-down (collect various resources while blasting through swarms of baddies with cool powers in short linear missions with simple objectives like escort, defend, kill boss, etc over and over) with Heroes of the Storm MOBA mechanics (pick a hero with fancy abilities, create a build by enhancing said abilities with loot and passives, each mission you level up from zero to unlock all abilities and passives you selected beforehand) and Borderlands quirky humor.
*Starts easy but gets pretty challenging quite fast from what I could tell: beyond the tutorial missions it felt like I really needed to dodge and use all my abilities to the fullest.
*Enemies felt pretty good with nice telegraphs, diverse patterns, and bosses.
*Has a nice blend of heroes to choose from: half of 'em melee, half of 'em ranged, most with unique synergies and playstyles to utilize.
*Missions are quite short so its a flexible game depending on your schedule.

The Bad:
*For a full release it still seemed kind of unstable to me: had multiple freezes/crashes when I was on the main menu, had some weird glitchy/laggy occasions where I just took damage for no reason what I could tell, stuttered/teleported around, etc.
*Humor felt kind of cringy at times (your mileage may vary), and you can end up quickly getting annoyed at the repeated quips from heroes as they don't have a large pool and they say stuff constantly: practically every ability use.
*The Medic hero felt super boring: an entire ability button dedicated to plopping a medkit down on the ground which you then pickup, wow~
*Missions can end up feeling repetitive not only due to their simple design, but the fact that you may have to do them all over again to grind or if you decide to try a new hero (no exp share or boost) and they repeat the same mission dialogue every time.
*Some of the challenge of the game can be due to questionable decisions like no invincibility for dodge roll, abilities that freeze you in place for quite a while, etc. Might not be solo-friendly.
*MOBA mechanics are a little confusing: dunno why they felt the need to have you level up each time in a mission just to get abilities and passives, and it adds extra confusion since you'll need to pre-select what you want beforehand. Felt unnecessary, but nothing too bad once you get used to it.
*Soundscape felt a little stale and muted: some sounds were really stock or grating, and some enemies felt really muted when they could've given some telegraphs through sound.

In the end I feel like it is quite ok: nothing spectacular or world-changing, but I could see fans of addictive loot/horde games like Warframe having plenty of fun blasting away in this.

I'd strongly recommend you come back to do the 4th and 5th campaigns when you feel less burnt out, they are waaay better than the first three. Probably a consequence of EA development and the first ones being made while they were still refining game mechanics.

This is also something I'm wondering about. They showed the map at one point and it had the typical Ubisoft-like open world stuff.. seven types of collectibles, open-ended objectives that you can approach however you want plus a grappling hook that let's you easily zip past obstacles or hijack vehicles to make everything much faster.

At least they're not gonna have crafting or leveled gear.... right?

none of what you listed is very fundamental nor is it widespread, and they demonstrably shouldn't have added or changed more than they did when every single line of source code that wasn't perfectly preserved has a different person claiming that it was their personal favorite line of code and that updating it to conform with modern linting standards has Destroyed Art Forever

as far as I'm aware the "critical meta-game poo poo" you're complaining the statue can do is 1. turn on an alternate display mode which horizontally flips the screen so the world feels less familiar, 2. change your appearance in the character creator, and 3. get forgiveness from aggroed NPCs. which is a feature from the dark souls games which the original badly needed as accidentally angering NPCs can lock you out of your entire item storage, and it's exactly the kind of thing you're saying they should have done more of. except they did that and you're complaining about it, so I'm convinced there's no way they could have handled this remake that wouldn't have had this response. I suspect many of the complaints are coming from people who haven't even played it and are complaining just to complain

the creative director has made it clear that keeping the soul of the original was critical to them and every decision about what to change was agonizing. There's nothing two-faced about the remake, they had an extremely fine needle to thread with modernizing a game of which people are very protective but which is also extremely dated, which is a sysyphean task. the result isn't perfect but I'm also not sure what perfect would even look like beyond my own set of personal nitpicks

it's the game the fewest people have played as it was never rereleased and didn't have series name recognition when it came out. a remake was more than warranted.

I think you've really misunderstood my point. For one, when I said "fundamentally" I meant in terms of "<thing> is fundamentally different" as in, I'm not getting worked up over a texture being a slightly different shade of green. Not that any given change fundamentally changes the game overall (though I'd maybe quibble w/r/t certain things like the UI but that's neither here nor there). Though frankly if what you're getting at is "who cares about Maneater's stupid mangled face, the game still plays good" then we're just kinda done here.

Ultimately, we wouldn't be having this conversation if they themselves hadn't claimed to be trying to protect From's vision. You seem to think I'm being hypocritical for criticizing things like NPC forgiveness, but the secret is I think it's absolutely a good addition and I have zero problems with it. What I'm saying is that they should've taken a more clear stance: Either slavishly remake the game without changing a single drat thing OR fully invest in putting their own spin on Demon's Souls and update it to modern standards without being beholden to what came before. Instead the remake isn't fully faithful to the original, often for seemingly no reason, but it also fails to take enough risks to make me think there was actual creative intent behind any of it.

NPC forgiveness is a conveniently minimally-controversial addition, but if they were free to import QoL poo poo from other Souls games there's plenty of other things they could've done but didn't. A real clear example of the sort of thing that annoys me is that they kept gender-locked gear, something even From moved away from in Dark Souls, and instead of directly fixing it they instead weaseled around it and let you change your character's gender at the statue so you can get access to the equipment that way. That's fuckin' dumb!

They can't both be staying true From's artistic vision AND also doing stuff like tacking on a dumb easter egg hunt across NG and NG+ to unlock a previously-unavailable armor set. Those are wholly incompatible to me.

None of this stuff had any affect on the game though, like I didn't even know anything about the armor until after I finished the game, seems just like a fun thing to add for the fans. To me it's like complaining that the load times were not long enough for it to be true to it itself or whatever. The game was great, not sure if you actually played the new one, but the art in the remake is amazing. I remember being blown away by the shrine of storms, it's so much better than the original.

If there's anyone who played Death's Gambit: Afterlife, can you give me a rundown on how the hell am I supposed to parry? The way it's described everywhere is press block + attack at the right moment but I simply cannot get this to work. There is another parry-type attack I can do with pressing the block at the right time, after this my character will do some kind of green counterattack but the way I see it on videos, there should be a big COUNTER! text on the screen.

I just can't get the timing down, haven't managed to get a single parry so I thought I'd ask if it's actually supposed to be like this.

Did you play it on the PS5? Did you play it on the PS3? I have a real hard time believing you played both and were not blown away by the PS5 version, but it's subjective of course, but it was literally the same game with a better framerate and looked a lot better. The original was so bland looking not becuase of design decisions, but because it was on the PS3.

Not sure what the ??? is, I bought a PS5 to play Demon's Souls, I finished the game and sold the console.
