that video looks great but just imagine how good it looks not on a garbage platform that takes 95% of the bitrate and throws it in the trash, then also pre-sets everybody to "1080 aUtO" which itself is lower bitrate than their regular 1080p setting

4k (auto) means 4k (resolution, but the bitrate is half from what you get if you go in and manually click 4k)

Uh yeah they would. all of our big streaming customers provide a shitload of resolutions usually with 2-3 quality settings for each. turns out you keep people on the page if you send them a 2mbps 1080p but they'll click away if they get knocked down to 2mbps 720p. Even though the former looks way shittier

Apple, literally the new microsoft, actively blocks the adoption of media codec technology that they do not have a substantial patent interest in. however, on more reasonable platforms that are not controlled by an abusive monopolist, it is possible to use royalty-free codecs like vp9 and av1, and so many non-Apple content publishing platforms try to serve bitstreams encoded in those codecs wherever possible.
