I’ll never understand the love of Fat Boy, the radiation effect and biogas craters are more annoying than fun. Meanwhile I can take A Clean Sweep setup and explode bugs in just as large (if not larger) a radius, don’t leave huge craters, more range cause the shell doesn’t weigh as much as a loot bug, and I get more than twice as much ammo to do it lots.

Also a lot safer to use Danger Close when you’re getting swamped without having to worry about a rad zone.

It's very satisfying. That's all. Sure It's not the most effective or cost-efficient PGL variety, but it hits those buttons. Soemthing about lobbing that slowass shell and seeing an explosion of bugs.

If there's enough bugs coming in a long stream, you can potentially kill them all(minus very tanky ones) with one shot, unlike normal PGL that can only pop the front bugs in the stream.

The nuke kills the front ones and all the others coming in behind die to the radiation, where with normal PGL you'd need to fire repeated shots. This means you spend less time dealing with them(because you can treat the ones further back as dead already once the shot is fired), and situationally can actually be more ammo efficient than regular PGL shots.

You get that kind of value out of it most frequently on escort and salvage, and you can stretch it further by using lures to force bugs to run into the radiation/stay in it longer. Really, the radiation AoE is the best part.

I used to love the faboy but I had enough missions entirely ruined by idiot inconsiderate teammates that I’m not far from immediately kicking anyone bringing it to my games. Why would you take it to an elimination mission when HPG exists? And then shoot the drat thing in narrow corridors repeatedly regardless of where and what your teammates are doing? As a level 250 dwarf… sigh :nallears:

And before someone says “but that’s just people using it incorrectly” I’ll just say that if using your secondary properly means holstering it 90% of the time you might just be gimping yourself?

It’s not even that satisfying to use, clean sweep has a crunchier explosion, waaaay more ammo and sends dead bugs flying around. Fatboy is just good at farting radioactive waste at hard working dwarves.

Thanks for coming to this management talk on proper workplace behavior and weapons best practices.

I've barely used fat boy because I've been on teams with people who do, and very rarely do they go a whole mission without at least moderately loving over the team with a badly placed nuke

Also the breach cutter is so good, against everything (except oppressors or jerks that are too far away)

Was scrolling down to say this. I don't understand the insistence that it's satisfying. The radius and visual effect is kind of pathetic for a "nuke," especially when the game acts hypes it up like it's a god button by limiting you to 5 rounds in the entire gun. It does not kill nearly enough bugs with the initial blast, affect a large enough area, last long enough, or look good enough to be worth the hype and hazard outside of Escort.

If you want to send a comical number of grunts flying, clean sweep does that twice as often with (I think) a bigger radius and an animation that is actually funny. It feels way more satisfying imo and it has literally no downsides. Or if you want to lock down an area so hard it's hilarious, driller exists. Neither of those make you an annoying team killing machine

The nuclear grenade launcher always seemed kind of impractical to me but after seeing those gifs I have to at least try it. I get in a bad habit of uaing the same weapons/OCs for months at a time without thinking to switch, but when I do its always a fun time.

Had a mission in the hollow bough last night with a data rack, korok tyrant weed, cargo crate and tritylite deposit. Took nearly an hour but great fun, and I finally got the scout shotgun OC that lets you fly.

It’s fine against oppressors you just gotta empty a clip into em. And it works from any angle!

I should note I use lightweight casings and extended clip.

the damage is so bad though, ignoring the front armor is only sometimes worth it. they only take damage on a small bodypart and they highly resist BC's damage types as well, just power attack/shoot em in the back with your primary.

I swear my autocannon has a hidden mod that lets it act as a targeting laser for my friend's PGL. Me getting started in on a good chunk of grunts only for a grenade to come flying in from across the drat room and instantly delete them all happens too frequently to be a coincidence.

I strongly prefer nukes, and while friendly fire is absolutely an issue I'd like pitch a case for it. Since a few patches ago, you can have your cake and eat it too with taking both ammo and +speed (213X2), meaning projectile weight isn't an issue; just point directly at things across the cave. I think nukes get more value the higher haz and player count you have; clean sweep owns small groups of grunts but once the waves get very large if I ever need a second PGL shot I'm just thinking "this coulda been a nuke instead for the same ammo cost...". The nuke's damage isn't in the direct hit, it's the colossal lingering AoE that cleans up late arrivals and assists with larger targets like bulks (which get locked down with stubby so they eat all the rad). The terrain deformation I consider a virtue; I've used it several times to salvage a downed dwarf who's on some awkward cliffside. Even dug an egg out or two.

But the real treasure is showing off for the greenbeards, lotsa oohs and aaahs. Priceless.

Did an elite deep dive with some randos. 3 engies and 1 driller. We almost lost in the second round (saved by iron will) but we managed to colplete it all! Lots of cheese flying everywhere.

I also got to use my electrical turret oc extensively. It's quite hard to use right. You can also electric-arc other engie's turrets for extra fun, but setting it up right is tough. Sometimes the way it arcs to other turrets is unpredictable, as they don't seem to arc to the closest, just wherever, causing all sorts of madness in defence. But when it works, it works! It slows things to a crawl, and all the while deals big damage. Grunts will die before they can cross, and big bugs are taking all the damage at all times regardless of weakpoints.

Also, there's just general bugginess with it, where it's hard to tell if/when a turret is arced up, or you clearly shoot it but it doesn't stick, or you've got 2 arced turrets not rendering the arc between them even though it's arced between. Also, you and teammates get horrible electrical screenrape while inside it, HOWEVER, it seems that the damage to friendliest is pretty insignificant (it least with the friendly fire perk, which I now love). Still, I really like it.

Ahhhh, I didn't know the gunner got a version of my sticky flames mod which requires all my teammates to stop what they are doing to finish off the bugs that are already burning to death and immobilized. That's cool that you can play either class that way.

I was playing DRG last night with a pubbie; we're running an extermination level, find the gold chunk, and we both ping it a bunch of times like any proper dwarf should. Another player joins; they have ranks. We're pinging the gold chunk, but the new player wasn't. It takes them almost five minutes as well as comments on whether they're actually AI (as well as a fourth player joining and pinging the gold chunk) to ping it.

I weep for some dwarves... I also think pinging the gold chunk repeatedly is the new voight-kampff test.
