I mean the rhetoric on the US side that’s pro-war is gearing up to make sure of that https://www.defenseone.com/ideas/2022/01/us-must-prepare-war-against-russia-over-ukraine/360639/ This is one of Obamas deputy assistant secretary of defenses. It seems like Germany might be the leading part of the NATO coalition to make sure cooler heads prevail - Lavrov, Russias Foreign Minister, seems to finally not be talking in ultimatums https://twitter.com/rolandoliphant/status/1484498962052796416?s=21 What this means is still TBD - more rounds of talks are going to happen, but the invasion rhetoric that the US is spreading might not be the truth - it might truly just be saber rattling as some Europeans have been saying This is good news if we’re taking a pause

It’s mostly silence from the conservatives, the ones that sent us into Iraq and Afghanistan are now democrats or at the very least got pushed out of the Trump circle. Biden’s admin is pushing hard to convince us that Russia is imminently about to invade, and Jen Psaki recently said the CIA uncovered a false flag plot in Ukraine that would give Russia a casus belli to invade Fox News is hosting anti-war guests, which make of it what you will. The US propaganda levels are hard to make sense of as Ukrainian media, outside of a few oppo leaders, seem to flip flop between imminent invasion and “Russia is just saber rattling”

the rah rah bomb the Arabs conservatives kinda disappeared from like 2008-2010, ever since libya the main audience for war propaganda has been do-gooder liberal types getting sucked in by state department funded docs with titles like “BANA: How One Child’s Voice in Aleppo Shook the World”. Under Obama there was a big pivot to targeting liberals with pro-war media which has continued to this day. I have a Ukrainian filmmaker acquaintance who once got contacted during the late 2010s by the actual state department offering to fund a documentary about the conflict, it would have been made through their own production company but all the money would come from the U.S. government. There are also a number of guys in Hollywood like Joe Piscatella who couldn’t really make it in the industry but found a niche where they just put together propaganda films on demand. The U.S. cranks this poo poo out constantly. I work in localization so I catch a whiff of it pretty frequently

They have been harassing Sweden on the Baltic Sea enough so that they had to send their army to the Gotland island in case they get cheeky with their navy, airborne from Kaliningrad and their "naval exercises". Also the Finnish Defense Forces said that they have also upped their Defcon for these recent event.

I only learned yesterday that apparently saying "the Ukraine" makes you look like a Russian supporter or something. My buddy chided me on it, being slavic, himself. I had never heard that, being from a bg where hearing about the country was through the lens of media, mostly from when I was young. I worry for some artists I've commissioned and worked with before; there's a burgeoning digital art scene there, with many skilled and wonderful people. I've been lucky enough to encounter some really amazing folks. I hope they stay safe. That's my Ukraine story.

I haven’t followed developments in submarine tech but in the case of a shooting war with NATO they would probably be used to interdict shipping and, if the war escalates enough, use cruise missiles against targets in Europe and the United States. And the subs with the nukes try to get into position to nuke stuff. It is an open question how well maintained the navy is. Most likely it is in better shape than it was a decade ago. Then again I have only read up minimally on Soviet naval strategy in the last decade. Maybe their general plans have changed.

We’re extremely good at this and incentivizing creatives who are insanely under appreciated makes total sense. I’m curious if you could expand more on what you see if you’re allowed to For sure, I’d rather not give a blow by blow of specific projects I’ve worked on, although the guy I mentioned is a good example of both the type of content and the people making it, but from the time I started in the content localization industry (early 2010s, post-Libya) you would basically have a parade of content come down the pipeline any time the US was gearing up for a new conflict or pushing for increased involvement in one. Usually you’d start seeing them show up at the same time the usual op-eds by Atlantic Council guys would appear in the newspapers. They were very slick prestige documentary features destined for a certain streaming service and the production often had some familiar faces. Looking into them, you would find they really struggled in the 2000s, slowed down or stopped working, and then all of a sudden switched to working on this type of content specifically. In Piscatella’s case the switch happened shortly after he took a speechwriting gig for Air Force officials in Washington D.C. I always figured this stuff was being bankrolled by the government, but once I had that experience where my acquaintance got an actual e-mail laying out the scheme things became a lot more clear to me. I still think the main arenas for propaganda leading up to new wars are the news media and social media, but the filmmaking side of it is really important and effective too, and it’s something I have seen consistently ChunTheUnavoidable fucked around with this message at 23:04 on Jan 21, 2022 |

Jonny Nox posted:Does Russia have a meaningful Navy? I thought a crane fell on it in dry dock. On blue waters? No. They have enough capability with smaller crafts to do meaningful combat on smaller theaters, such as Black Sea (against Ukraine) or in the Baltic Sea (against Sweden and/or Finland). Their Navy depends on the existence of air force, but in the closed quarters areas such as mentioned before, they are a capable force. And they can mine the poo poo out of the area to make it unavailable to everyone else.
