I gave up on Orient at episode 2 because it was boring and repetitive. Like I even agree it looks awesome, the weapons look great, it has the style but no substance.

I can suspend belief for silly fantasy weapons because rule of cool. I can get on board for over the top huge monster hunter weapons. I can say yeah sure for Guts' unusable dragon slayer sword, but the double scythe isn't that. It's like a focus group of 14 year old boys compared the weapons they drew in the margins of their notebooks for home room and came together and designed a weapon. It's "I studied the blade" level of cringe. It's like the author played Chrono Trigger and thought "Wow Magus and his Scythe is pretty cool, but a DOUBLE scythe would be even cooler." And a testament to how dumb this weapon is, my suspension of disbelieve was broken harder by him using that dumb thing as a pick axe as I was by him using it as a weapon. This is the hill where I die. The double scythe from Orient is bad. From a functional standpoint, a design standpoint, a rule of cool standpoint, by any metric its loving dumb. BRB going to write a manga where the MC stabs himself in the butthole because he did an overhead swing with his stupid overly designed weapon. my problem with it is that experience in using a pickaxe is not applicable at all to using even a regular scythe much less that thing. the shapes are somewhat similar but that's it. it'd be better if he was actually using a battle pickaxe when everyone else was using swords. as for practicality, i don't really see why it would matter in an anime about fighting monsters with swords.

that doesnt make sense though because ive seen good things with dumb mall ninja weapons. the aesthetics of the weapons are really minor and can even be a benefit in a story designed to carry that energy and embrace the fun side of it. orient is just kinda lifeless and dull and going through the motions. for instance, none of gurren lagann's weapons make any sense whatsoever but it fully embraces it as story driven entirely by that kind of energy.

Then someone came and thought, what about a bad weapon that can hurt the user as much as it can hurt the target? Maybe I can base a whole anime around this lovely, poorly thought out weapon. Orient!

I know I am being extra, but it is like someone asked me, "design the dumbest weapon possible" and I designed a gun that shot forward and backwards and then the producers said "No. Dumber." Then I wrote the script for ORIENT! Then there would be some goons that would say "The gun that shoots forwards and backwards is cool actually."
