vokksu makina no densetsu so far seems like a show that would really benefit from having a much longer number of episodes; the plot pacing feels efficient to the point that character development has a pretty fast turnaround such that in the introductory episode I'm actually doubting that the main characters could have had a change of heart so quickly having only briefly been to that village. The animation is generally pretty good but that fast pacing does undercut certain set pieces which would have benefited from actually utilizing dramatic tension. For some reason only the dub is available, which is fine, I've been enjoying the acting performances of the VA's and they sound oddly familiar.

Probably not my anime of the year but it's certainly enjoyable to watch and makes my excercise bike sessions go smooth. As I don't really have a whole lot to watch this season it easily makes the list (of things to watch weekly) and slides in easily having finished the first season of Wheel of Time on Amazon Prime Video.

A movie from last year is now available in English. No idea what to expect since the director's only credits have been as an animator but heck, I'll give it a shot.

After playing with the issue for little while, it's nice that Tokyo 24th Ward has now officially come down on the side of ACAB, with the head of the Minority Report police officially confirming he is a supervillain and the main character in the police is officially a backstabbing POS. If I'm reading the tea leaves right I suspect the next couple of episodes are going to be really rough explicitly on him, which is about what he deserves after this in the last episode.

I think they also finished the opening credits? I haven't gone back to check but I think it used to be padded out with shots taken from episodes

Clearly they followed The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising an Anime Production Out Of Debt.

that Ko showed any remorse about the situation at all made me feel a bit positive towards him, even if his 180 from being a decent human immediately puts that down again. at least the aspects of his motivation (feels he cannot reconcile with friends, his attachment to family being activated albeit in the most ghoulish way, his particular read on mom's rule philosophy etc) get laid on the table this week. i expect they will bring him back from that decision by the end, but hopefully while keeping him at arm's length.

i still have incredibly low expectations for where the show will go both in terms of the production and final statements on governance/policing, but drat if it isn't a compelling weekly watch so far. and surprisingly it didn't even need to keep doing the ep1 action movie stuff to carry things!

I was on Ko’s side for episode 5 but he flushed a lot of that goodwill away when he decided he was okay with his dad using his sister’s corpse in a mad science experiment.

Still, if I had to predict where the show is going, I’d say he has to come round at some point. The first episode made a big deal of showing that they can overcome these ugly binary choices but only as long as they're able to work together properly. Ran is probably going to go through a similar arc where he allies himself with clown mask guy, and it’ll be up to Shu to talk sense into both of them so he can get the band back together in time to stop both villains.

Update on this: It's mediocre, alas. Didn't dislike watching it but wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it.

At least it's just a movie tho, it woulda been easy to just stretch the premise out to make into a full tv series, and it'd suffer for it.

It's the first season of PreCure, yeah. Over time the series has gotten an adult female fanbase as well, so the contrast isn't as stark these days.

info on that image: strong evidence via jp blogs is it's from a shop in akiba in 2004 as an ad for precure DVDs. it would be in the interests of a dvd shop in akiba to say that precure is targeted to older dudes and shop workers are often otaku themselves. it's not connected to an official source and has no numerical data attached. so the context is very anecdotal and self-professed. which is fine in its own right, its just that this image gets spread around because it looks like some sort of official or statistically backed material.

also note the title of the graph is the 'Main Targets' of precure and not just like, viewership demos or something. its a bold claim to say that precure's animation is targeted to older males and one that is not actually backed up by staff comments or the content of the anime. from this it definitely comes off as promotional and lightly tongue-in-cheek

Yeah it was pretty good, enough that I want to see it get up to Shenmue 3 cos I didn't like the game enough to finish it.

I forget where but I remember years back in Bandai's financials that had a break down of Precure sales which said Adult woman were probably the number 2 market and it's kinda of noticeable with the way merchandising has gone. And even back in the original if the male market was #2 it was a distant #2 to kids cause Toy sales

Endorph
Jul 22, 2009

i mean these days ofc adult women are the number 2 market, because of women growing up with the show. same way adult men are a big demo for old shonen that are getting revivals or are still ongoing

And if you don't really care for her personality, don't worry as the manga does a good job of rotating the characters around each arc.

Honestly I do think it's a selling point. While adding new characters is a good way to shake things up, I like that Sono Bisque rotates them in and out of the story as needed so they don't overstay their welcome.

dogsicle

i'm not sure why she would be annoying, basically everything bad about her is immediately disarmed and turned against her by gojo and marin

and honestly the two of them were a bit boringly pure until now. it's nice to have a little freak who stalks and tries to do some blackmail, only getting traction on the latter because gojo is as stupid as she is

yeah juju's intro was veering into a little too stock initially but after settling in she's a fun character who gives marin someone with similar interests to talk to which makes gojo being the odd one out who's being brought into their interests in anime and games funnier. it would be more awkward to pull in all the bizarre magical girl anime stuff without the framing of marin and juju sharing in their love of it and thoughts on its characters and story
