oh wow, i just noticed The Babe Rainbow on there. i didn't even think they were still around. all i know is they did a song called "Secret Enchanted Broccoli Forest" that i was obsessed with 5 or 6 years ago

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh2qHxUDt6o

uh haha so this song now has 3 million views... so i'm guessing they were used in a soundtrack at some point or something because for a very long time this video had like 30k views lmao

same, but i know it's just literally never gonna happen. Jason doesn't need it to happen, because there are probably a LOT more people who want to see Spiritualized live than who want to see Spacemen 3

i could see a reunion for a festival, but that would require them to want to do it, and as far as i know Jason and Sonic have not said a single word to each other since like 1990

I’d go if it were at a festival I’m sure even though it would be too big of a crowd. But yeah I’m sure it won’t happen. I did see Spectrum playing some Spacemen 3 songs in a relatively small club so that’s probably the closest I’ll get.

Any chance any of you know the guitarist from that tour? As I recall he was young and really good.

It’s just a matter of preference of course but Spacemen 3 are miles ahead for me. Also the two times I saw Spiritualized were easily some of the most unimpressive shows I’ve ever seen so that’s coloring my opinion even though I know it was probably bad luck.

Yeah, that could definitely be a few bad runs for you, which is unfortunate. I'm probably bathing in bias but I've seen them maybe 5 or 6 times and it's never been underwhelming. Still, I owe it to myself to dive into more Spacemen 3 on the regular. I only have Dreamweapon (which I DEEPLY enjoy) and Perfect Prescription on vinyl, but all their stuff is on spotify ripe for streaming. I have enjoyed the live stuff that's available. I need to give the studio material more love.

Even though I count Spacemen 3 as one of my all time favorite bands I mostly just repeatedly listen to Taking Drugs to Make Music To Take Drugs To. I like the raw demo sound a lot more than the way a lot of the songs were later released.

And yeah Dreamweapon rules. I love this story Will Carruthers tells about it, how he was so high he didn’t even realize he never turned on his amp: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/sep/26/spacemen-3-will-carruthers-playing-the-bass-extract

Just listening to this album now, it’s pretty great. I was kinda iffy on the first two songs just because of the abundance of fx (rhythmic breathing in the first one, weird sounds like you’re turning your kitchen upside down looking for the butter knife in the second one - guess I was still foggy on the album at that point he he), but it smoothed out really quick after that. The title track might be my favourite song of theirs so far (and I fuckin loved With Dim Light, btw)

Both of those are cool :wooper:

I saw Sonic Boom and Panda Bear when they came to NYC a couple months ago. A few days before the show I got a notification that because I bought tickets to the show I could have free tickets to a Dolby atmos listening party for the album. A friend and I went, it was at an office building in midtown, they had a very corporate little theater with speakers all the way around the room and on the ceiling. There were maybe 25 people there. Sonic walked in and mumbled his way through a little introduction, then they played the whole album nice and loud while an animation of the Reset logo played on the screen. It sounded amazing in there. Everyone sat there with their eyes closed, looking high. Luckily right before I left home I realized I should bring something for Sonic to sign in case he was there, until then I hadn’t even really thought he might be. He was quiet but nice and let me gush for a minute while he signed Dreamweapon and a solo 10”.

Nice thing to happen completely out of the blue and for free considering I’m unemployed

Mud Spencer - Ratu Kidul; this might belong more in the stoner/doom thread, but it has a wonderfully psychedelic kind of devotional repetitiveness to it:

Julie's Haircut - Zukunft (another great motorik banger):

Yeah, I've been on a huge Gizz kick, too. I hate to sound like a blowhard, but imho they're one of the best bands of our generation. When you look at their entire catalogue and see how they've progressed, the topics they've tackled, the genre fusions, the microtonal stuff, which was then integrated into pop music (ie. Butterfly 3k), the whole Bootlegger stuff they're doing where they're releasing entire, giant loving live albums like Live at Red Rocks '22 (86 songs of live Gizz, it must've been insanity to catch the whole thing live) for free, in FLAC, with album art, credits, etc. It's just kinda ground-breaking stuff imho. You may not like all the material they release (I'm lukewarm on the poppier, lighter stuff myself), but all the material they release is great for what it is. They're impeccable musicians. K.G. has some amazing middle-eastern fusion going on in Automation, a lot of Turkish scales. Sounds like modern Anatolian psych rock. Most of K.G. and L.W. is some of their best material, though (again, in my opinion - I identify with a lot of their lyrics on these albums, too, which might be why I'm biased).

Osees are great. Took a while for me to get into them, but after listening to John Dwyer's jazz fusion/experimental/rock/noise etc releases, I kinda got a feel for their rock side and I got into them in a big way. Again, incredible musicians, and the live stuff I've heard has been on fire. A lot of krautrock influence in their jams, too. They're kinda hit and miss for me in the studio, though, in the sense that their forays into hardcore punk, etc. weren't really my thing. Their new album sounds pretty good, but I've only heard it once. Reminded me of the new Frankie and the Witch Fingers but slightly more mid.

Speaking of Mildlife, have you heard heard Phase II and How Long Does It Take? They're great singles, maybe some of my favorite material from them.

e: oh this is what I mean when I say I identify with the lyrics:

(from O.N.E., off L.W.)

[Chorus]
Am I going insane?
Am I able to wake from the nightmare?
Can I keep it containеd?
One night everywhеre turned to nowhere

fuckin he'll yeah i hear that brother

You’re not being a blow hard, King Gizz is one of the best bands. I’ve been following them since 2016 when I saw the Gamma Knife video and knew they were weird and awesome and something I wanted more of.

I’ve been preaching KG to my friends but none of them really got it until Petro Dragonic. That album caught the attention of many people I know who have since dived into the discography. It’s really wild and awesome watching them explode in popularity because they deserve it! Their live music on the bootleg gizz Spotify account is bananas. I’m really curious to see my end of the year Spotify tally because it’s been a very gizz heavy year. Last year I was in the top half percent for Khruangbin and it feels like I’ve listened to more Gizz this year than Khruangbin last year.

I need to check this thread more often, I love all of the recent music that's been posted. Especially since motorik has been mentioned: it's so niche, but probably my #1 "genre" of all time. Sometimes when I go back and listen to songs I've enjoyed 20 years ago, I suddenly realize that there's a motorik beat that's been staring me in the face for the whole time, before I knew what that even was. But I think that's stuff for another post.

There's a band called Motor!k that pretty much sounds exactly like what you expect:

motor!k - headlights
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhQeK8Ku9oo

motor!k - terra illustris pt. 3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdHw9vRCs0s

They have 4 albums now and they're pretty much all great.

Also new Synth Gizzard is out! How do you all like it? I love the callbacks to PDA on the extended versions. And to reiterate what has been said further upthread, I think they're the only band (right now or ever?) that could pull of a pair of albums like this within a year. Such incredibly talented musicians. The incredible work ethic of releasing 2+ albums a year on average without sacrifing quality in the slightest. You can hear how much fun they're having on almost every record. Best band of our lifetime for sure.

Also, unrelated but check out this cute bovine that reminded me of John Dwyer:

It’s real good.

Chang’e is righteous. Especially at like 4:30 when it suddenly becomes such a happy, positive feeling song. I love it so much.

I think there are callbacks to Ice, Death elsewhere in the new songs but I haven’t found a source for what I’m hearing, nor have I heard it and thought to even make a note of the song and time it happens. It catches me by surprise every time.
