How hard would it be to design an accelerator pedal that disengages and sounds an alarm if you mash it hard enough

I know it shouldn’t be necessary to idiot proof cars to that degree but there sure are a lot of them on the road

make it display BRAKE IS OTHER PEDAL, DUMBASS in the instrument panel too

in my Audi if it detects that you’re approaching the vehicle in front of you too quickly it doesn’t accelerate if you’re on the gas and at a certain point will begin slamming the brakes

in a normal car design that'd just be to talk to the infotainment network

hang on like the actual car control software, like the thing that takes gas pedal input and eventually tells some power mosfet to let this much current go through, is written in python?

the entire car runs python, not just the infotainment stack. there’s some cython and some plain C, but it’s absolutely “fresh out of coding boot camp: the three ton automobile”

afaik and iirc

iirc, japan is starting to require something like this since they have so many elderly drivers confusing the pedals

tesla is now claiming that, according to the computer, the driver never hit the brakes and had the accelerator mashed to 100% the whole time, although he did try 4 times to put the car in park. of course, if the issue was that the computer was hosed and didn't register pedal presses, the logs are useless

I look forward to Chinese regulators using tesla’s guts for loving garters, it’s going to rule

imagine deploying your product in a market that has regulators with not just teeth, but fangs, claws, and specialised murder equipment, when you’re actively struggling against the worlds most toothless regulator (the NHTSA)

I don’t know where you and others are getting this impression of “Chinese regulators” when the task isn’t burying foreign companies in red tape once a domestic solution comes to market. Can you even name the agency responsible?

being banned from the largest and fasted growing market that every OEM including Chinese OEMs most people itt have never heard of is basically a death sentence since that’s the only place they can still achieve incredible growth in

i think the op's point was that chinese regulators would gently caress tesla over IF there was a sufficient domestic competitor. and since there is none (idk whether this is true or not), they won't care for now
