Rather than a complaint, perhaps Ukraine's preparation along the Belarus border is a convenience for Luka? It's not a complaint, it's an excuse. "Sorry, really wish I could but it's too late, it's impenetrable."

Pretty sure that with hats that big and heavy, any attempt by the Belarusians to cross the border without the roads and bridges in place would just lead to their army immediately sinking into the mud

After seeing what Ukraine did to Russia for over half a year, they don't want any part of this poo poo show. Loudly proclaiming any such endeavor would fail is not only broadcasting that the don't want to do it, but also stating a fact.

Its more likely that there is a prison hierarchy of pilots in the russian air force where some pilots are forced to run certain missions, others get their gps stolen, while others just hang around the airbase victimize the other pilots.

Bakhmut serves as a good solid defensible positions for Ukraine.

While they have the forces to redeploy that would break the siege, it's far better to keep those troops ready for the freeze. Which will significantly increase mobility. Mobility serves Ukraines battle doctrine more than Russia's sitzkrieg.

And while some of these defenses would be mean if they're fully manned with crews that actually know what they are doing. While that isn't the Russian way of doing things. It's low skilled shitties charging into the field and they are unable keep their senses in the hell that will be an offensive artillery barrage.

Hunger sucks right? Cold sucks right? Imagine those two things while being shaken by artillery.

I guess we rely on bigly bombs dropped from all sorts of planes to crater the target, so you're never in the situation of being dependent on weeklong artillery duels that eat thousands of rounds a day or shoot & scoot mortars.

We'd flatten the complete airdefense in a few days and after that there's airpower running wild on any target that pops up until nothing worth hitting is left. Ground is for mopping up the shellshocked remains or CQC.

huh so maybe i'm reading too far into a tweet, but they're talking about doing bombing runs. Thats different than firing off a shitload of cruise missiles, and way more dangerous for the aircraft. If they are bombing, they'd be dropping unguided iron bombs from 40k+ feet so they're not necessarily vulnerable to Stingers or whatever, but this would be a stupidly huge commitment of force by Russia and a massive escalation of air power. Also missile defense systems can't do poo poo about unguided iron bombs cruising in. This could be a real bad night for Kyiv :sigh:

In order to drop iron bombs, they have to fly deep into Ukraine's air defense network and see how good they are at dodging SAMs, and maybe some UKR fighter jets for fun as well.

I expect that they are probably loading up with stand off missiles just like they've been doing, just a lot more at once this time. Of course Russia has been doing some mighty stupid things in this war, so maybe they are gonna see how good Ukraine's high altitude air defense network is, and give the S-300's a chance to do exactly what they were designed to do.

Now with less breakage.

Only tangentially related, but: There's a Russian guy in the lab across the building from us, and he's been looking a bit worried - I talked to him a few months ago, and found out his boyfriend was still in Moscow, and he was debating Norwegian immigration to get him a visa.

He's been looking positively cheerful recently, and I got around to talking to him last week: Since we last talked, the boyfriend is now safely in Oslo, they've gotten married, and he can stay indefinitely on that basis. :3:

Given what's been said about the winter conditions, I cant help but imagine there's a grim possibility that if they just dig in and wait a week the Russian side will mostly/completely freeze to death and they can just walk in afterwards. :ohdear:

Those are the big strategic-nuke-carriers right? Not to say they are carrying them, but would they be the ones for the job? I really want to see at least one get torched if they are just for putting a dent in Russia's MAD capabilities and a nice big middle finger to Putin.
