"Oh, Barkov was out against the Bruins and it was Spencer Knight's first game back off of two weeks of sickness, of course they got thumped", "oh Duclair was out for 3 months, no wonder they had to sign Eric Staal", "oh they're putting $14.5 million against the cap for goaltending with Bob and Knight and were expecting the salary cap to go up for next year, of course they can't expect to compete" etc etc etc. Just super frustrating that you can list any number of excuses for why this year is not working anywhere near as well as last year without considering that this dumbass culture change of hiring Paul Maurice and trying to emulate the Lightning is the actual problem. Wait. They did what?

Kessel was the second defender on the puck anyways. Sure he did nothing to help out (I get the feeling he was bracing for a shot block) but there were three teammates on the ice slower than him. So his backcheck is fine. ![]()

Honestly, that goal isn’t on Phil anyway. Hague takes himself out of the play completely by sliding instead of taking any sort of line toward the puck. Not to mention the size mismatch. Sliding is fine sometimes, but this one was just dumb.

I've reached the point in the season where things seem to be humming along nicely for the Stars and while I'm not so dumb to think it'll translate to postseason success, I've really not got a ton to complain about aside from needing more scoring from the third/fourth lines. This is all new to me--I don't like this feeling.

12 game skid incoming.... But yeah, it's weird to feel this kind of optimism about the team. DeBoer might only be good for a year or two, but baby I'm here for it while the ride is good! Robo is perfect.

Having Dellandrea and Johnston turn out to be good to great middle 6 forwards in effectively their rookie seasons was a huge boost and the team's good luck in finishing + goaltender performance + having basically 0 injuries has been enough to cover for a mediocre to bad defense core. if the Stars could get 1 good top 4 defenseman that can contribute on the power play it would be such a shot in the arm for the team and it would elevate them to the status of contenders in my opinion.

Not sure they’re going to be able to upgrade on defense at the deadline, but Nils seems like he’s been a great pickup for them. They could just rent Klingberg if they have any injuries lol. They also have a lot of guys with recent Cup finals experience. I personally tend to rank pretty high the importance of having a really great end-game five man unit that can close out a game or catch up to it. Their top fix/six guys is pretty nasty. That’ll help a ton. I think they need one more guy ahead of Seguin to out out there in six man situations—Robertson/Hintz/Pavelski/Miro/Benn/Kane sounds better than having Seguin out there imo.

They also have a lot of guys with recent Cup finals experience. Kane likewise I think is pretty washed at this point and I don't care for paying what the Stars would need to pay to grab a guy who is almost a PP specialist at this point in his career. I was very happy it didn't happen when it was rumored in the off-season and I hope the asking price remains too high at the trade deadline. I would like to believe the Stars' best years are ahead of them and I don't like the idea of trading near to ready NHL prospects for rentals. **Nils Lundkvist has been really good at 5v5 for the Stars this year, he's a solid transition defender and better than expected when he's having to go into the corners and compete with the more physical and imposing wingers. He's had some games this year with Heiskanen on the top pairing where he's really impressed and it looks like the Stars potentially have a top pairing combination that can work in future years. Unfortunately his presence on the PP has been less impactful, partially because the 2nd PP unit has been a mess in general and partly because DeBoer keeps yanking him off of there to give Ryan Suter more minutes. I hope that he can get more of those minutes in the future but for this season it looks like if there's going to be an upgrade to the point man position for that 2nd PP unit it's going to come externally. That's like 25-30 more wins, with maybe some loser points tossed in, in 50 games. Are they the team that won 13 in a row or the team that has 2 wins this entire month? I dunno. Probably in-between that somewhat. They had 27 wins all of last year so either way this season is an enormous improvement and years of everyone saying "the devils are going to be good now" finally turned out to be true. This is my position too, although at some point you've got to get past PDO and finish chances and get some wins. It's frustrating that they've lost six in a row right when the Canes/Pens/Rangers caught fire and now they are second in the division despite a 21-2 run. If they continue to play like this, they're going to be a 100+ point team and I think that's clear. Even when they lose, they run into insane goaltending or get snakebitten on finishing chances, but when you thoroughly outplay teams like this game in and game out, including teams like the Hurricanes on the road, you're a real good team.
