it's so funny when teachers try to stop kids from reading books they like and instead make it a stupid chore
This happened to me constantly in elementary school even when it wasn't for reports or anything. I was reading above my grade level so they could have not harassed me if I sometimes wanted to read choose your own adventure books or whatever during the time when we were allowed to read whatever we wanted. :argh:

That also reminds me that in like third grade my teacher said to write a book summary "like on the jacket of a book" (or something like that) and so I wrote it exactly like it would be on a book jacket and omitted the conclusion and then they were like "why didn't you describe the ending of the book?" and I felt incredibly dumb but looking back on it I feel like it's 100% their fault, so there.

it was their fault!!! I had an assignment like that in a history survey course where had to write about, I forget the exact ethnic subgroup, as if we were the area's governor (who happened to be an orthodox bishop at the time) informing the new Kahn about the peoples under his rule. so I did exactly that (minus the racist hypothesizing)

I went to office hours to dispute my grade and she said "why did you spend so much time on their failures/lack of education/etc but not mention their advances in agriculture or cultural achievements, you only did half the assignment" my argument was "I’m a bishop writing about Muslims why would I even consider that stuff" and got my grade raised from C+ to A

in primary school i was reading way ahead of what i was "supposed" to be, the teacher didn't believe me until i read one of the more advanced picture books out loud to her.

the teacher went to my parents and said "he's great at reading but he needs to get the breadth of vocabulary, have him go through this stack of picture books and then he can read what he likes".

I'm imagining that this makes no sense because at an age where you're learning to read you wouldn't be learning vocabulary from picture books, right?

they were a series of books (organized by reading level) where each page had a big picture, and then a sentence below it describing what was happening in the picture

and as you went through the series the sentences got more complex (and more interesting, which is why I was wanting to skip ahead in the first place)

Glen Cook, The Dragon Never Sleeps. Awesome single novel scifi with superships with immortal/undead crews enforcing pax romana over space. Great political intrigue, competent characters with blindspots that doom them, space battles etc. Gets it all done in one (long) book instead of being a unnecessary seven book series.
your review prompted me to reread it (i remembered really liking it when i first read it mumblemumble years ago, but i couldnt recall many details) and it was as good as i remembered (and as you found it)

what really carries it through is the pacing - it just hurtles forward and never gets bogged down in its own worldbuilding or in navelgazing over its invented details. stuff happens, and then you turn the page, and more stuff happens. the style reminded me of early gibson (throwing a bunch of terms and proper nouns at you and not bothering to slow down and explain them, counting on you to have to run to keep up with it) crossed with james ellroy (the clipped, short writing that seems to have been deliberately shorn of unnecessary words). i wonder if it was originally meant to be a bigger series and then got cut down at some point, forcing cook to compress a planned 800 page epic down to 250 pages? regardless, the result is an unusually strong done-in-one military space opera novel

the sequel is good too

i saw uncharted. good action scenes and effects. uninteresting story and characters. oh look they're going to double-cross each other again. they should've just adapted the first game, even if the tomb raider movie already ripped it off.

im curious - what length do you consider 'average'? i ask cause you said long and im like 'oh no it's gonna be 700 pages' but it was ~250 which i think of as the book equivalent of a a 105 minute movie. it is possible my brain is completely broken, too, im not trying to say that one judgment is right or wrong or whatever

The Knick is an awesome show he made about 1900s NYC doctors staring Clive Owen. The techno soundtrack makes the whole production feel modern and vaguely cyberpunk, which matches how these characters feel about their own changing world
