I don't think I ever had a cat that didn't immediately notice another cat was in the house, no matter what I did to hide their presence. Of course I also tend to crash my cats together like action figures and shout "get along" at them, which works about as well as you'd expect. Actually it works better than you'd expect, I've gotten adult cats to get along with kittens using that method, but kittens are much easier to integrate than another adult cat.
