there is a decent argument to be made that if you're going to spend an hour loving around with settings to make it not suck, you might as well do it with linux because at least it's not intentionally user hostile

kde works decently well as a windows desktop workalike but i wouldn't say linux runs windows applications worth a drat at all. even electron garbage seems to just display a blank window a lot of the time.

valve hired about 50 really good devs to work on the exact parts of windows emulation and the linux gpu stack that matter for video games but everything else about wine sucks as hard as it always has. even things like the open file / save file dialogs are unusably bad. the cmd.exe implementation runs batch files just fine but interactively it straight up exits if you hit Ctrl+C and inserts a tab if you press tab.

electron has improved the situation on linux a lot for work though, a lot of stuff does have a linux port thanks to it.

to me it only adds to the appreciation that the kind of person really into linux (being really into not only software but the most formulaic of softwares a huge red flag) hates that that is how things are working out. much the same wihh proton, get the hated win32 running and suddenly the pos is fun and useful

i played around with pop_os and proton last year just to see what the state of the art was. stuff like cyberpunk 2077 and control worked quite well, with RTX features enable even. the biggest issue was linux just not supporting hdr at all

idk if i'd rather use the office web apps, or office in wine, but neither is ideal exactly

I knew Win 11 was chock full of ads and spyware but I didn't think it was quite this bad. With all the "A.I integrated system" horseshit in Win 12's marketing, that system is likely to be even worse.

either you don't have a tpm 2.0 chip, or you have a cpu that's older than the 8th gen intel core

there are other requirements, but those are the two most likely culprits. there is a tool you can run that will tell you exactly why, there's a link to it in the windows update area

hmm turns out it was turned off in bios so I turned it on and now flying colours

is there a compelling reason to upgrade other than they've moved poo poo around

none whatsoever unless you have an 11th gen or later intel cpu

it is a worse experience than windows 10 in every regard

nope. the only weird poo poo amd is doing is with the latest gen 3d cache cpus, and even for that they've just released processor drivers for windows 10/11 it's not like intel's thread director stuff, which is only in windows 11
