my partner decided she doesn't want to make coffee in the mornings when she's up first so she got a drip machine with a timer and built in grinder so you put in beans and water the night before and schedule it for the morning

to keep up appearances I made sure to :qq: about our other nicer grinder and carefully weighing beans:water ratios and expert pourover technique but it's all a sham really because it's coffee and it's hot and it's there when you wake up and nobody is too good for that

yeah, i just use the cheapest keurig i could get except i dont buy pods, i use a reusable one. it's actually insanely fast too compared to all the ones i've used before this. other ones i've used take like 5 minutes to make a cup of coffee but the one i have will do it in like 30 seconds.

and if i'm feeling like making more than one cup i've got a cheap rear end french press and electric kettle

i've also never been able to tell the difference between brewing methods, even supposedly fancy ones. it's all in the beans to me

my brother got one of those, I think he was expecting to get woken up by the smell of fresh coffee wafting through from the kitchen. in fact it means he's woken up by the extremely loud grinder.

but having coffee right there when you wake up is pretty amazing

ALPHASTRIKE!!!

Used my moka pot for the first time over the weekend. I kept checking it and it was empty, then suddenly full of delicious bean water.

So far the warost part about it was having to throw out the first cup as instructed because of possible manufacturing contamination.

Is the aeropress worth it? I see a lot of people in here talking about it but it looks like a french press to me so I don't really know what's so special about it.

I do this too. Still using the same machine from like 2010 or something

only complaint is it doesn't fill my large mugs

it's different to a french press in ways i'm not qualified to explain. i find it makes better coffee than a french press more consistently, but it's more fiddly because to get a full mug i have to do two grinds, two presses.

extremely easy to clean and makes a passable latte base (see previous posts where i whine about not having the budget for an espresso machine).

i find you don't get as much control as you might with a french press because there's the premature drip through (which is eliminated with the drip control cap but i haven't tried that) but i think the theory is that espresso does this too so it's okay.

tldr as with any coffee equipment do what james hoffmann tells you to

Do you use the paper filters or the steel one?

losing the one to the wind was a mistake but this was negligence and i accept any punishment given to me

i prefer paper but if you like a chewy coffee then metal is good too. i still haven't gotten through the original filters they last forever

my opinion of aeropress overall is that it gives great results and it's cheap with replaceable parts, and convenient if you're travelling or something and want good coffee. but it quickly gets time consuming if you're making more than one cup so i only use it sparingly when in the mood

ive found the big rubber stopper can get weird and sticky, idk if it was from several years of uv exposure or what. but you can just buy a replacement stopper ($6 for two on amazon) if it comes up

also i like to put everything into it upside down and stir, then put the filter and cap on then flip it over onto a mug

my quest for frugality has meant i have had no coffee shop-provided lattes for 3 weeks now. no starbucks, no good earth, no indie places. assuming an estimate of $20/week on dessert coffees that's $60 into savings which can go into some god drat good beans.
