KFC varies in quality from store to store. Havant don't seem to care how much seasoning they use on their chicken, while the one in North Harbour seems to be on some sort of yield bonus, so it's barely got any seasoning at all. And Nandos is Nandos, half a chicken and two bowls of peri peri chips is a god send of a meal

Birds Eye's are a nice addition to a chilli I think, I use the same mix for both vegan and beef chilli. Chipote, Ancho, Rocoto and then sometime Birds Eye for a bit of difference.

If you like making chilli I would really recommend having a crack at making tortillas as well. You can get Masa Harina around some places and it's not cheap but not too bad either and even if they don't turn out perfect they taste really great fresh.

Have you tried Asafoetida? It's used in Jain cookery as the they're forbidden for religious reasons from eating onions or garlic. Adds a very similar flavour to garlic.

Speaking of conspiracy theories, a friend of mine has been reposting stuff about how Cummings was actually up at Castle Barnard to sign a secret deal with Glaxo to manufacture Covid vaccine. It's a shame, cos he's generally a pretty astute guy and has done good work in giving gammons food for thought, but I think this kind of stuff undermines the genuine shady poo poo the government are actually up to all the time.

My mum's going spare that she hasn't seen her first and only niece since March, my brother flat out refuses to let her come over. It's not even like he's being consistent about it either, since he's being going to work this whole time, and he's not doing it out of concern for my folks, it's specficially cause he's worried that his daughter (born just before christmas) will be put in danger by them visiting.

I know she's his kid and it's ultimately up to him and his wife, and I know my folks don't just have an automatic right to interact with their grandchild, but just spoke to Ma and she was in tears. Really want to speak to him but know that'll only make it worse, he's a stubborn and often irrational fucker who will only double down if I do.

It's like, if he's not going to let anyone interact with his child until this is over, then she's going to be two by the time any of us get to see her again. I've only met her twice, ever, but it's so much more important to Ma than it even is to me, and it's just so pointless and arggh

I know, lockdown and that, but my folks don't go out otherwise, they've not broken the rules, they'd be the only ones in any actual danger whatsoever, they aren't going to then go anywhere else either, and they're so upset that they're missing out on these first few months entirely

Your brother is in the right. Tell you mum how to set up Skype or something if she wants to see her grandchild. Sure, his motivation is wrong, unless the kid has some sort of immune system problem it's unlikely to be much of a risk for her, but you shouldn't be loving going around to see the grandkids. It sucks, I get it. It loving sucks for everyone though, yer ma doesn't get to be an exception any more than Dominic Cummings. My sister & brother-in-law were about to buy their first house when poo poo went down & are desperate to get out of their lovely small Edinburgh flat with damp problems into a slightly larger & less lovely one with a garden & no damp but here we are. I miss going to the shops for a bar of chocolate & a tin of Bru while sitting down the beach in the sun. But you're only supposed to go out for essential poo poo and seeing a grandkid for a cuddle isn't essential. The lockdown is already far too lose which is why we're dying in greater numbers than anyone else, far more work should've been furloughed.

Have you tried the Jain trick of using asafoetida instead? It's not exactly a replacement to my taste, but it might be worth a try!

As an aside I really struggled to find asafoetida in Norway, looked everywhere but nowhere seemed to have it and nobody had heard of it, until I discovered that it is called "dyvelsdrek" here, basically "devil's poo poo". It doesn't smell that bad imo.

I got some of this from a hippy organic place in Manchester just before lockdown and it's fantastic. Easy to make and adds so much more flavour than flour tortillas! Last week I made nachos fully from scratch and it was incredible. Also gluten free I assume since it's corn not wheat!

They differ in their understanding of the proper way to achieve this, largely based on the necessity (or lack thereof) of a state structure and the use of its power. Whereas many on the libleft believe dismantling the state as a concept is necessary ASAP, as its a direct manifestion of capitalist oppression, many authlefts believe the monopoly on power it represents can be harnessed to defend the revolution, as it were. Even authsocs, on paper, anticipate that the need for the state will wither following a transitional stage (of indeterminate length!)

I probably lean more authleft here but I do think there are convincing arguments for both positions. But I wasn't wanting to get into an sectarian argument, I just think there's a healthier way to have dialogue between tendencies.

Stopping Brexit to prevent a left wing Labour government winning an election is one thing, but supporting the will of the people to get a right wing Labour government into power is another.

Look at Starmer's actions from the perspective of ensuring that Britain doesn't have a leftist government, and it all makes sense.

IIRC, the last time this came up his line was basically "The government has promised to sort this out by December and I will hold them to that"

It seems very similar to the Brexit tests he had before, in that they are holding the government to their own impossible target when we know that it's impossible, and he knows it's impossible, and we know that he knows it's impossible, but for ~reasons~ he can't just say it so he has to pretend that he thinks the government has a chance of doing it

I honestly don't know if that's the best line, it didn't do us much good last time for example, but I'm not sure if coming right out and saying "extend it now" would necessarily be any better either. On the other hand if that is what he's doing it's a pretty transparent bit of rhetoric

tbh as with all things Brexit I think labour are hosed either way on it, because it's a right wing project that is unfortunately popular with a lot of the general population but absolute poison to the membership, who the party does actually need even if it wishes it didn't

also we have until December to secure the deal I suppose, but the current deadline for requesting an extension to the transition period is actually the 30th of June. I'm positive the government won't request one by then, but technically this is exactly the time that Starmer should be asking the government if there's a realistic possibility of securing a deal and if not asking them to request an extensiond.

https://ec.europa.eu/ireland/news/key-eu-policy-areas/brexit_en posted:

The UK and the EU are now in a transitional period that will last until at least 31st December 2020. The period may be extended by up to 1 to 2 years if the UK requests an extension before 30th June 2020. This is to enable both sides to agree on a new and fair partnership for the future.

I have no idea if the EU would agree to an extension later, but it's probably an option.
