April saw the whole country in lockdown, with more than nine million workers expected to be furloughed under the job retention scheme, Debenhams goes into administration again, Oasis and Warehouse close, Boris Johnson goes into and out of intensive care, then into and out of his house in the country.
The UK death toll from the virus becomes the second highest in Europe at 26,097. Michael Gove concedes that Boris Johnson missed five COBRA meetings in the early stages of the viral outbreak, and that the UK shipped protective equipment to China in February.

Lingg was one of eight anarchists tried for murder in the aftermath of the Haymarket Square bombing in Chicago in 1886. The bombing took place during a rally for the eight-hour day on May 1, and came to be known thereafter as May Day, the International Workers’ Day.
Despite an almost complete lack of evidence, Lingg and four others were convicted and sentenced to death.
On the eve of his execution, he took a small bomb that had been smuggled into his jail cell, and killed himself by igniting it in his mouth.

  • We now have an email address! Applications to solidarity@ukmt.fund will now be accepted, or you can still use the form (linked below) or PM a committee member.

I don't quite understand what this article means by "first dibs?" Can't they get other companies outside the UK to produce it? Are they seriously saying that they would withhold the vaccine from the rest of the world just so the NHS can get it first? Are they really going to manufacture the vaccine in one country and then ship it back to the UK and expect that country to be fine with it? What the hell?

Why not just give it to all the pharmaceutical companies and let them use their own resources to produce it so we can maximize production?

Nah the cruelty is the point. I remember a documentary I watched a few years ago - think it was Portillo whomst was presenting - and after finding a potential means of execution involving some gas or other widely believed to be painless if it was used for such a purpose, took the idea to some top pro-execution oval office in Texas or somewhere.

Said oval office was almost visibly shaking with rage at the prospect of a less cruel, more reliably painless means of execution. All the talk about wanting to do it 'properly' and how it is a grim necessity or what have you went directly out of the window as soon as an actual alternative was presented. That talk lasts as long as is required to try and avoid the cruel and unusual punishment clause, and not a micron further.

There was, around the first few years of the almighty war on terror there was a lot of effort put into assuring americans (and the wider world) that torturing the poo poo out of people worked and was a-ok especially if jack bauer was doing it to someone very stereotypically middle eastern with a clock counting down somewhere because they are running out of time

Then as soon as it was clear that consequences don't exist in a hypernormalised world those fond of torture stopped bothering to fund and run an unnecessary pr campaign as they could just do it quietly and be ignored

There was something of a movement towards progressive capital punishment in the late 19th century, as long as progressive meant 'set them on fire with electricity' or 'small room filled with the bad acid gases'.

I think it's only Washington state that bothered to go with measured drop hanging. Idaho and (at one point anyway) Utah let you pick firing squad, which seems fairly humane compared to all the rest. I'm surprised it isn't more popular given certain law departments' love of shooting people and the psychological positioning of the gun as a tool to turn injustice into justice.

Portillo's method was dry nitrogen gas, which works very well, but you might die without knowing it, so justice does not happen. Also he got hanged in effigy in the documentary so it's worth watching.

Anyway, speaking of extremely normal things happening in America, Maryland has called in the National Guard and state police to guard coronavirus tests and supplies, to stop them being seized by the federal government to be redistributed to states that DJT likes.

Well they did for me anyway! didn't stop me getting some stuff from Welsh Labour under an OLD email address I originally used which I have politely asked them to remove).

I only got one email from HQ saying they were sorry I was gone.

I'm not going to start wittering on about GDPR to them because as a former branch secretary myself, I do understand how most CLP & branch level folk are just volunteers with varying skills - usually pretty poor, in the IT department.

In my case, convincing another branch member who was going to pick up the secretary role temporarily til a new one was found that it was absolutely NOT ok for him to build his own database in a word document to email people from (and having assured me he wouldn't put all the addresses in the CC instead of the BCC field promptly did) and that, as one of so many people these days who only has a smart phone and no computer, he shouldn't be using the computer in the local library to do it.

LONDON MAY DAY online rally goes LIVE at 11am:

https://www.londonmayday.org/

quote:

With the current situation we are celebrating May Day on-line this year. Leading speakers, messages from unions and organisations, music, poetry, film will be running from 11.00 on May 1st. There will be special guests and other surprises.

We are celebrating international workers day. The reality that our society depends on workers could not be clearer at this time. We will be honouring those workers who are keeping our society going – both here and across the world.

But we will not be forgetting key issues facing workers – getting financial support & ensuring their housing; fighting the anti-union laws that try to limit our effectiveness; facing the other great crisis, our environment and the need to get climate change through just transition.
