The story is the absolute worst part of the game and if there was a way to skip all of the cutscenes rather than just some of them, it would be a fantastic game to mess around in.

I believe it. I cranked up the difficulty to Hard from Normal as there are apparently Epic bosses and what-not that only spawn on Hard or Cruel and I'm a sucker for extra content and Hard seems to be a sweet-spot. I'm fine with Sion needing to be aware of his glass cannon status. But man, what a cannon he is.

Not sure if how I want to build my little Hero though. Both her Martial Artist and Battle Mage builds seem kind of hybrid with her abilities, but I'm sure I'll figure something out. Starting out Martial Artist as I don't want her to feel like a poor man's, single-target Sion.

Yeah that was the first time they did it, and I think the issue was more like Epic did it without informing the devs or asking for permission ahead of time. On the last sale with a similar coupon there were one or two games that were excluded and I didn't hear any of the same concerns, so I'm guessing people can opt out now.

It was that plus the first time they did it they just knocked down everybody's prices instead of giving people a coupon. All the big publishers followed up by de-listing their games to avoid the price going down.

A cartoony art style done well will always age better than trying to push the envelope of "realistic" style graphics.

Yeah, I'd also put it down to the art style. It's not quite as cartoony as Warcraft 3 or cell-shaded in the style of games like Okami, but it's visibly not aiming for realism as far as the technology of the time allowed it, so it ages better in comparison to games that do.

It's basically exactly what its Steam page bills it as being: an idle clicker game where occasionally, things actually happen. It's pretty fun for something you keep running in the background all day while you work and check in on a few times an hour to take a breather, but there's not much depth to it aside from that.

I actually do regret getting RDR2. It feels like it should have been a fun game, it's a gorgeous technical marvel and all that, but the story is so absolutely, penetratingly depressing that I ended up really not liking any of it. It's just one long trip of poo poo starting off bad and only getting worse. That's it, that's the whole game. Literally every time you do anything, the quality of your life and world gets worse than it just was. Without fail, right up until the end where Arthur is unceremoniously killed in a fist fight in front of his surrogate father who doesn't give a poo poo about him anymore. For north of 70 hours. It's a long, slow slog that even has a lovely ending, and I grew to hate it. I'd get a refund I could. The bit at the end where you build John's house where the game knows what it just was and tries to make you feel better doesn't even begin to make up for it. By the last few hours of Arthur's arch, I dreaded even launching the goddamn app.

Oh and also, all the little decisions they made pushing the game towards realism by making poo poo more tedious and annoying and requiring unnecessarily extra travel time, unskippable animations, and button presses for every little thing you do made the experience of actually playing the game suck along with the depressing plot. Yay.

There's the venn diagram of realism vs fun to play and way too often devs think focusing heavily on realism is enough to overcome lovely game design and unfun levels/sections all because of a "deep" narrative.

You can tell a deep and meaningful story, but also make a fun game; they aren't mutually exclusive and forcing the PC into monotonous game play for story purpose is either going to work really well in small doses or just make everyone talk about how much they hated that part.

Also, not every deep and serious game has to compete for the title of that years best misery porn. Things happen bad and good and if you don't balance them properly its just angst for the sake of angst.

Last of Us 2 I'm really expecting to have some divisive reactions if the leaks are at all accurate.

As an example of how Rockstar sacrificed fun in RDR2; there's certainly an argument to be made that the 'weightyness' of the controls connect you to the world more (compared to AC Odyssey's 'floatiness' for example), but not having analogue walk/run controls in this day and age? When they DO exist in first person mode? For a game with such an insane level of detail, that decision must have been considered in depth, and they decided 'repeatedly press A to run' was the option to go with. It was bad enough that they stuck with it in GTAV but by now it's just baffling.

I found the "weightyness" actually disconnected me from the game world. I had to put an extra layer of thought into when to stop pushing the stick to stop moving where I wanted to stop. Yes, in real life you have momentum but your brain is really good at taking care of the act of stopping without you having to consciously think about it. It's why I've never really liked weighty controls, they add some kind of superficial realism but sacrifice actually being immersed in the game.

The devs were pissed because Epic took a flat dollar amount off all games over a certain pricepoint without asking, which dropped their Lowest Sale Price on deal sites(effectively the "do not buy above this" amount for a lot of people), and a number of the games this happened to were newly released or still in Early Access like Hades. The 10$ coupon is a compromise because it doesn't affect their numbers.
So basically you're right about the devaluation but it was a flat discount and the coupon was the fix.

Edit:I just looked through at the old thread and they even applied it to some preorders so no wonder the devs were furious.
