Guys.

It's possible to write an internally consistent novel written specifically from a character's point of view without any of that actually mapping to how you really think society should be.

It's like a lot of science fiction is about writing about an idea that you don't have to want to exist in real life, or something.

Go read The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress and tell me how consistent its world and politics are with Starship Troopers.

It's like Heinlein was an author of novels, or something.

I mean I hate to jump in on the Heinlein derail, but it's pretty well-known that his politics were kinda all over the map. He literally wrote Starship Troopers because he got mad that left-leaning Americans wanted to put an end to nuclear testing in the late 50s.

e: I'm gonna change "changed severely over the course of his career" to "all over the map" cause ST and SIASL were released so close to each other. His politics did change over the course of his career, but that might not explain the apparent discrepancy between the two books, released in 58 and 61 respectively.

All fun and stuff about the underlying leanings of Star troopers, but we need to focus on what is really important!

How long has the bartender been in "development"?

I'm pretty sure some indy games have been announced and released in the time this amazing AI bartender has been in development.

How will we ever get true Hairy Roberts without delivering this much needed npc?

The pipelines alone that are tied to this one npc are staggering and must weight on commandos daily!

But seriously how long have they been working on this stupid npc?

So many parallels can be drawn between these things I think they are all a symptom of the same human-conditional failure. A combination of toxic individualism, being unable to admit that one is wrong, insecurity and wanting to feel like a part of a group or cause, all set against a backdrop of genuine and justified - but misdirected when it comes to identifying the causes - feelings of having been left behind by society.

Then as a result of all of these factors coming together, imagine instead of just, y'know, coping with it and getting on with your poo poo, diving insanely into a ridiculous thing that exists only to use and exploit, defending and lionising it every step of the way as it becomes part of your false-yet-core identity.

Just imagine that.

The character who goes on said diatribe is the old teacher of the narrator that he visits in the middle of the novel specifically so this could happen. It's completely divorced from the plot and entirely serious.

I unironically love the first Starship Troopers movie (and may we not discuss the sequels), the Roughnecks Chronicles TV series, the mildy obscure FPS, and the extremely obscure anime OVA. They are hugely fun and well done science fiction. The book I enjoy overall for the science fiction and the stark differences from other versions. I don't have a meaningful comment on the politics, but I know that at one point it was (and may still be) required reading for US Military Officers.

Edit: The loving propaganda videos sprinkled through the film absolutely kill me.

Edit Edit: Forgot about the weird CGI Anime movies that came out. They were... pretty bad but better than the original sequels. At least Casper van Dien was back.

Never heard of the anime OVA. Going to check it out. Thanks!

The online stuff is definitely going to be interesting if only to see what people do with it, I never bothered with it on PS4 prefering to stick to the offline since it's just so darn good and well made. The only downside for me with it coming to pc is that I'm probably going to have to upgrade my computer to run it properly, I'm about 4 years overdue for an upgrade since I hardly ever use it for games these days lol.

The wifes pc is a beast though so might just have to 'borrow' that haha :D

Look if you don't want cheap screenprinted cast-offs from our last big whale dinner, just say so. It's not like we're desperate for every last cent over here! We don't need to go scrounging the back alleys of Guangzhou looking for an ancient man with a mysterious grin and a box of pens that already have our logo on them. We do that for you, the backers, and also because of a gypsy curse that compels us to sell at least 100 stupid pieces of garbage to idiots per month or we all burst into flames.
