I think there are a bunch of people who can create trailing images. I know some who could do this as if they were just going out for a stroll.
Watch the cutscene!

Heh heh, I told you! We brought the tree back to life.

Rita hits Karol and runs off towards the tree.

Umm...do you mean Flynn?
Unfortunately, you just missed him.
No way! Not again...
He was quite surprised that the barrier had been fixed.
Umm...would you happen to know which way he went?
No...I'm sorry, I don't know... However, he did entrust me with a letter.

Wha? A-a wanted poster? Wh-why?
I guess I made a little too much mischief...
W-what kind of mischief gets you into this?!
I-it's my fault...
Oh come on... Only 5,000 Gald?
That's way too high for just breaking out of jail! You must have done something else!
S-so, what does the letter say?
"I'm going to Nor Harbor. Catch up with me."
"Catch up with me," huh? Easy for him to say.
He also writes that we should watch out for assassins.
Wow, he even knows we're being hunted!
Sounds like this guy knows what he's doing.
Looks like we have some dangerous people after us now. What are you gonna do?
Well...umm...
I'm going to go to Nor Harbor. I could pass on a message for you, if you want.
But...I...
Think about what you want to do. I'm gonna go make sure Rita isn't causing too much trouble.

Before running after Rita, I stop by the shop to synthesize some things.

Backstep: Guard + Back to jump away from enemy.
Evade: Agility +5%.
Recover: Guard when thrown into air / onto ground to jump back onto feet.

Critical: Increases chance of inflicting a critical hit.
Strength: Attack +5%.
Heavy Hit: Increases chance of stunning an enemy with a physical attack.

This is one of the few key items you can synthesize, and you should probably get them as soon as they're available. This one's probably the least useful of them, with it you can change the character you run around in towns, dungeons, and the world map as. It's mostly cosmetic; I can only think of one moment in the game where the character you're running around as actually matters.

With that done, let's go and fetch Rita.

Watch the cutscene!

The flowers are in full bloom even though it's not the season for it... And the barrier's strong, too. Did Estellise really do this?
What do you mean?
Karol let it slip when we were leaving Aspio. You tried to change the subject, but it was too late.
Guess I blew that one.
We mages have nothing even remotely like she has.

Don't be ridiculous! I have a formula that I have to work out!
A formula? What do you mean?
...It's nothing. Forget about it.
So what did you want? You came here for something, right?
Well, that just took care of about half of it.
So what's the other half?
You said that it's easy working with blastia because they never betray you.
Yeah? So?

...Oh, I get it. You're worried for her. Worried I might hurt her.
Estelle's honest. Good. Unlike you or me. I'm just saying... Don't do anything reckless.

Skit: Reviving the Tree
Wow, I've never seen this many flowers on Halure's tree before.
Huh? Doesn't it always get like that when the flowers are in season?
In season or out, I've never seen all the buds blooming at once like this.
Really? Guess we're lucky to get to see something so amazing.
I'd say it's more abnormal than amazing...

Back at the town entrance, we run into some familiar faces.

Watch the (unvoiced) cutscene and battle!

I say, we've come to courteously escort you back to the capital!
And then we can clamp Yuri in chains where he belongs!

Jeez, this guy never lets up, does he?
An old acquaintance you may be, but today I can overlook your transgressions no longer!
Yuri isn't a bad person. I asked him to go with me!
Argh, Yuri, you ruffian! You're coercing Lady Estellise!
No! This is what I really want! I'll go back to the castle. Just leave me be for a little longer!
I cannot allow that! Return to the castle with us!
I can't go back. Please understand this!
We have no choice. We'll have to apprehend the criminal as well...

Kiss your freedom goodbye, for it ends today!
I say, prepare to face the Imperial Knights' ultimate fighting arte, the Over Limit!
The Over Limit doesn't belong to the Knights! Anyone can do it, last time I checked.
I say, be quiet!
An Over Limit...?
It's a technique to increase your abilities while fighting. How do you do it again?
You fool! How could you forget something like that?
I say, I shall jog your memory! But after that, I say, I shall give you a non-stop ticket on the train of death!

Adecor moves in to attack. Yuri just casually moves back a bit.

Oh, right. You attack the enemy, and that raises your battle spirit.
Blast! Your hits are not connecting at all!

Ouch... I say, that hurt... I cannot, I say, stand this any longer...!
Oh yeah, your battle spirit goes up if you're attacked, too. All right...and then, if you release the battle spirit that you've stored up...

Yuri...w-wow...
We mustn't let his power charge up any more!
I've got you just where I want you...

This battle's easy, it's really just an introduction of how to do Over Limits. Adecor and Boccos pretty much do the same stuff they did in the very first battle of the game, except you now have a full party so it's no threat at all.

That said, they can and do activate Over Limit themselves. Although it doesn't really matter.

Nice work, men!
I'm sorry... I can't go back.

Right, so, Over Limit. Over Limit behaves very differently from other Tales games. First off, there's one Over Limit bar for the whole party. Once it's filled (by inflicting or taking damage), anyone can use it by pushing right on the D-Pad (or any direction really but you want to get used to right due to something that gets introduced later). This expends the Over Limit bar, and puts the character who used it into Over Limit.

Unlike the benefits enemies get, you do not recieve immunity to stagger during Over Limit. Instead, you gain the ability to chain any attack into any attack. If you're a spellcaster, you also get the ability to cast any spell instantly, no charge time neccessary. This is incredibly useful and, in some regards, very broken as you might be able to imagine.

Another minor thing you get is your Skill symbol. Remember back when we got skills, I mentioned that equipping many skills of the same type makes a symbol appear on the Skill screen, granting stuff like increased attack at certain times? Yeah, they only activate during Over Limit. Additionally, if you somehow manage to get multiple people into Over Limit at the same time, everyone in Over Limit gets every symbol at least one of the party members in Over Limit has. So if, say, Yuri has Increased Attack and Rita has Increased Magic, and they both go into Over Limit, both Yuri and Rita will have increased Attack and Magic while they're still both in Over Limit.

Over Limit lasts a set amount of time, around ten seconds. There's some ways to increase that time, but those won't be available for a while, so make the most out of your Over Limit when you activate it.

She says she's not going back, so get lost!
Yuri! It's them again!

drat it, I knew they were still after us.
What is it this time?!
Wh-what do you mean?
I'll explain later! Karol, which way is Nor Harbor?
Uh, ah, it's west! West! You go over Ehmead Hill and Capua Nor is right there.
All right, let's go now, then.

...Argh! Make a decision! Which do you really want to do? Keep traveling with us, or go home?
...I'm going to keep traveling.
A wise choice! And one that those knights surely wouldn't be able to agree with.

...I'm sorry.

Leaving our knight friends behind, our destination is Ehmead Hill to the west.

Here's me showing off the Special Flag I synthesized earlier.

Next time, we're gonna go through Ehmead Hill and meet with a monster many people consider the hardest boss in the game for when you get to him.

That's weird... The barrier's gone.
You mean there was a barrier here?
There was when I came before.

Are you sure you aren't mistaken? I'm pretty familiar with the barrier locations, but here?
You just haven't heard about this one. Nan told me it was only put here recently.

All right, never mind us, guys. I'm not gonna go look for them if they get lost.
Shall we, Yuri?

Let me through! I'm Rita Mordio of the Imperial Blastia Research Laboratory.
Researcher: Oh, you're a mage from Aspio? Excuse me!

I think you have plenty already...

Karol comes running, excited about something.

Hey! Listen to this!!

Who did what how... huh?
Someone riding a flying dragon threw a giant spear at the blastia! And then just flew off!
A human riding a dragon? No way.
I've never heard of anything like that before.
That's what I thought too, but a bunch of people here saw it happen! They say it was a "dragon rider."
A dragon rider... Hmmm. Well, the world's just full of surprises.

There she goes again.

Researcher: There's nothing strange at all. Perhaps you are...
Just who do you think I am!?
Researcher: I'm well aware of who you are. The famed genius mage, correct? But surely there are some formulas that even you aren't familiar with!
You can't use a weird formula like this! Think of the poor blastia!
Researcher B: H-Hey! Stop gawking and help us catch her!

Knight B: A fire? I don't hear anything or smell anything...
Knight A: Hey! You little liar!
Crap...they caught on that fast?

The Knights start chasing Karol, who runs away.

Knight: Wait a minute... You--there's a warrant for your--

It's now or never...

I'm sorry.

Knight A: Hey! Stop goofing off and help catch that kid!
Knight B: drat...!

*Huff* *huff* Rita, you should really think more before you act!
*Huff* ...That barrier blastia was just so strange, I couldn't help myself...
Strange? Something fishy about it?
I have a feeling that may be an understatement.
Well, our hands are already full as it is, so could you please keep us out of it?
...It doesn't concern you, regardless.
Yuri Looowell! Where have you run off to now?

Hey, Mr. Famous, sounds like you've got a fan out there.

Umm, well, I'm...
Yuuuri, come out, come out, wherever you are!
You can talk about that later!

Something or someone can be heard in the bushes.

Waaaah! Wait, wait! It's me!

Anyway, let's get our butts to Nor Harbor before things get any more complicated.
Which way were we supposed to go, again?
Let's see, as the crow flies...
Isn't this a beast trail? Can we really go through here?
We'll go as far as we can go, at least. I don't want to get captured again.
We'll need to be on the lookout for monsters, then.
Meh, what are one or two monsters to the brave Captain Karol?
Y-yeah, that's right! Though if the barrier were up, we wouldn't have to worry about monsters at all...
I can't stand it! Why does some idiot have to go around breaking blastia and making our lives difficult?!

Dungeon Time! Ehmead Hill is, frankly, fairly uninteresting. There's a lot of junctions but most just lead to dead ends with some treasure.

Skit: Who is Nan?
...Hey, Estelle. I noticed you keep looking in my direction--what's up?
You don't mind if I ask?
All right, well then...here goes. This "Nan"... Are you in love with her?
Ack...*hack* *cough* *choke*
Nan is a girl's name, right? Is she the girl you wanted to show Halure's flowers to...?
Waaaaaa! No, no, no! You got it all wrong!
I do?
Man, she'd be so angry if she heard you say that...
Karol, good luck with her! I'm rooting for you!
Uh, yeah...well, thanks. That's encouraging...

Of course, we also get some new artes in the battles here.

Repede learns Thievery, which allows him to steal an item from the enemy. For some reason I barely ever get this to work manually, but the AI is pretty good with it.

Stealing in this game is fairly unimportant. There's only one battle where the enemy actually holds something that can only be gotten through stealing, and most enemies just hold some crafting materials they also drop. But hey, can't complain about extra items.

Estelle gets Resist, which raises one ally's Magic Defense temporarily.

Skit: The Dragon Rider
Man, some people have some weird hobbies. I mean, who goes around destroying blastia?
I wouldn't really call that a hobby.
If we ever come across whoever's doing this, I'll destroy him!
But what if he has some reason for what he's doing?
They can have any reason they want, destroying blastia is unforgivable!
Period!
Ack, my, my neck! My neck! Waaaaaghh! Ack, heeeelp meee, Yuri!
Meh, that'd take effort. Just play nice with each other, kids.
Estelle...
Umm...do your best, Karol!

We eventually run across those flowers:

Rita! Don't touch it! "Inhaling billybally leaf pollen can lead to vertigo and strong feelings of exhaustion."
Hmph...

Whoops, sorry!

You're interested in healing artes?
Nah...
...It's no use. Healing artes don't work on this. We'll just have to wait until he recovers naturally.
How long will that take?
Karol, be strong!

Sometime later.

I said I was sorry.
If you're all right, then let's go.
Let's be careful to stay away from the billybally leaf from now on, okay?

Skit: A Nice, Fun, Relaxing Trip
Red-eyes, knights... Why can't we just have a nice, fun, relaxing trip?
You're one to complain, Yuri.
Yeah, weren't those knights calling YOUR name?
But you're the one who was fighting with the mages, Rita.
Please, everyone! We're okay, aren't we? I actually think it's kind of fun.
If you think being chased is fun, you're going to love the rest of this trip.
Yeah, you may have written off what just happened, but we're still fugitives!

Skit: The Value of a Barrier Blastia
That was a pretty big commotion over breaking a single barrier blastia.
I dunno, it seemed like the commotion Rita caused was even bigger.
Stop bringing up trivial details!
Of course people would be upset. It was a barrier blastia. Blastia are intertwined with almost every aspect of people's daily lives.
Good point. Things got really crazy back in the lower quarter when the aque blastia broke.
I hope they can fix it soon.
Yeah. I mean, that's what we're going through all this for.

Alright, the boss is coming up. Let's look over our equipment we got here first:

Magic Guard: Allows blocking of Magic by holding Down while guarding.
Item Pro: Reduces time immobile after using an item.

This thing is actually a dick move by the game: Strength-wise, it's the best thing you have right now, so you'll probably equip it; however, it's an axe, which means both reduced attack speed and attack range. Both of which you don't want against the next boss. (I put it on anyway because I'm slightly overlevelled here, so to kinda counteract that.)

Backstep: Jump away from enemy while guarding.

Magic Guard: Allows blocking of Magic by holding Down while guarding.

Alright, with that checked, let's go to the boss!

Watch the cutscene and boss battle!

Wh...what's that?
Gyaaaah!

A survivor, huh?
If we leave it here it'll surely go back and try to attack Halure again...
But Halure has the barrier protecting it now.
Even so, how are the people of Halure supposed to sleep at night with beasts like this crawling around just outside the barrier?

gently caress this guy. My battle here went surprisingly well, but he's still an rear end in a top hat.

He comes with two minions, which you want to kill off first as they have fairly little health and are annoying.

Now, the first thing that happens while I'm doing that is Yuri learning a new arte.

Crushing Eagle is our first Arcane Arte, which has some benefits over Base ones. You can also link Base into Arcane artes. I'm not really a fan of Crushing Eagle, though.

Anyway, Gattuso and can go into Over Limit, which he likes to do near the start of the battle. At that point it's not a huge deal since you want to concentrate on the cubs anyway, but it's still annoying.

Note that there are some Billybally Leaf plants on the field. If we - or the enemies - hit them with an attack, they release pollen that stun whoever is near them. So try to stay away.

Gattuso has several attacks, such as

poisoning you,

stabbing you with his tail,

dashing into you, thowing you into the air in the process,

or attacking with his teeth. It all hits fairly hard, he can execute them in fast succession, and you really shouldn't be surprised if someone dies. Hope you bought some Life Bottles!

One good tactic against him is having Rita cast Fire Ball. He's weak to fire and has a pretty low Magic Defense, so one fire ball takes off about 1000 HP.

For the secret mission, you want to get him close to a Billybally Leaf and hit the leaf, preferably with Azure Edge or another long-range arte.

Now, the game is very finnicky about what counts and what doesn't. I think it wants you (instead of him) activating the flower, and you not getting hit by it, but it doesn't always quite work. Try it a few times and you'll eventually get it though.

And that's about it, I guess.

That was easy.
Now Halure is safe as well!
I don't know...

Our Secret Mission reward is an Attack Ring, an accessory that increases the wearer's physical attack power by 10%. Not too shabby.

Achievement/Trophy:

Secret Mission 3

Now, I wasn't entirely happy with my fight here. Not because it didn't go well, but because it did. I didn't really get to show off how much of a dick Gattuso can be. So here's a few alternative battles:

Typical Battle: This one subs Repede for Karol. This is probably closer to how a typical victory against Gattuso looks like, well maybe with a bit less Over Limit.
Suicide Run: For this battle I put Estelle out of the party, which is a terrible idea. However, it does show off really well how much of an rear end Gattuso can be.
Fireball Spam: This took me a few tries to get right, but is essentially how you'd quick-kill Gattuso by abusing his low MDef and fire weakness. I misclick once or twice when switching characters because I had to juggle two controllers due to not having the Moon Selector yet, but otherwise this is about as fast as it gets at that level. (Rewatching that I should have probably set AI-Rita to Fire Ball only but whatever.)

Anyway, back the the story.

gently caress you Karol. I'm not sure why the game designers thought this boss was easy.

But there could be a dozen more just around the corner...
N-no worries, seriously!

Not so much with the beatings from Rita. I'm pretty sure no one tries to break those up because Rita is insane.

This scene is funnier if you watch the video. Karol's portrait suddenly starts backing away, and Rita's slowly starts approaching him, then Karol's portrait takes off and Rita's chases him. Nice touch there.

I'm starting to believe Rita has a thing for him...either that or she just likes loving with him, like Repede like loving with everyone else that isn't named Yuri.

Karol and Rita have that kind of "younger brother older sister" kind of relationship which lasts for the entire game, and never gets old. This game is great.

It's definitely better to watch the video of the skits. The movement of the icons really helps sell what the characters are doing when talking. When Rita's attacking Karol, her icon is right up on his, and actually lifts his icon up a bit. I'm hoping this trend continues.

As someone who has an older sister, I can verify this to be true. They love trolling their younger brothers nonstop.

I can actually stand Karol BECAUSE Rita abuses him. Makes their camaraderie that5 much more believable. Party dynamic is so much more refreshing, as the entire party doesn't hate each other, but they still like to screw with each other on a regular basis, and all know it's in good fun. Refreshing change of pace.

Yeah it's like they're actually a bunch of late teens / early 20s guys just hanging out together. Especially since the tone of the story is very light so far, the skits and general atmosphere of the game (the art style and colours, for example) really works. It's rare I actually enjoy the party dynamic in a JRPG but this game seems to have something special.

It seems fairly rare that other JRPG parties have much in the way of dynamics beyond whatever develops in the interactions take place at main plot points and love-interest/enemy subplots. Vesperia does a great job of spending a lot of time developing the characters in other moments. It would be interesting to add up the lines between party characters for this and a few other popular games and see how they compare. I bet even without weighting for plot importance ToV comes out way ahead. That's pure speculation, though.

I still can't believe they picked THAT place for the demo. I had a really hard time defeating Gattuso in the demo but did surprisingly well once I got the full game.

This boss was what put me off buying the game when I played the demo a while ago. But I picked it up because of this LP and it's really great. I'm just about to the end I think and it's been great fun.
