So jealous of you southerners and your never ending track season... though with a nice long Michigan winter I can save up for summer and work on my cars.

I've been doing HPDEs in my 370Z for the last few years and started building a SpecZ car out of a friend's wrecked 350Z for this year. I'm almost sad to be planning for SpecZ since I've been having so much fun working on it and it was pretty nicely modded before he put it in a tire wall at Mid-Ohio. Supposed to be finishing up an E30 for Chump/LeMons but no one seems to have time to work on it.

For some reason I never thought to look at AI for a racing thread. :V

Going out on track at all involves risk, so it just comes down to where you draw the line.
If I wanted to stay safe I would sit at home on the couch and read a book.

That said, I'm going to get a cage in the near future, but for now it doesn't keep me up at night.

That's pretty much exactly the calculation I made when I put in my harness bar and 6pt setup. I wouldn't be caught dead in a 4pt harness though... submarining is a scary proposition.

I've yet to see a rollover in my 4 short years of tracking and I hope this streak continues. That being said I am finding myself faster and faster and less and thus less and less confident in the car protecting me in a wreck so I bought a dedicated track car to cage.

I don't know if you guys like videos but here is my friend Derek in his Exige chasing me in my 370Z at Mid-Ohio last weekend. I don't know if he would have been able to keep up if I had remembered to refuel before the session but it made for a fun afternoon. If I don't refuel after every session I have fuel starvation problems in right handers like the Keyhole and into Thunder Valley.

The OEM VLSD is also pretty much an open diff now and I hear the outside tire squeal all the time. Smoked the tire in turn 9 about 6 minutes into the video.

We were running mid 1:46s... about a second off my best time last year when I ran on used A6s instead of nearly used up R6s.

We had sleet and snow at GingerMan last weekend. I stepped out of my trailer Sunday morning to a serious snow shower but by 5:00 it was mid 60s and sunny. I was able to keep the R6s on and we really had a surprising amount of grip despite the track being very cold and a little damp at times.

Of course I corded the damned right rear tire... I was having a terrible time with it spinning on corner exit so I was applying throttle gradually and late but I still managed to destroy the drat tire's inside edge. Never had a problem quite like that in the past...

Yes, once you are caged and what not, it is a good idea, but as an entry level track day and autocross helmet, do open face. In a non-caged, airbag on, just using a seatbelt case, the helmet is just really for insurance anyhow. It isn't going to make a huge difference if you crash.

I had my first serious on track (or for that matter on street) incident yesterday morning. I was chasing a Corvette and Grattan Raceway and as I came up the hill the car just suddenly darted left after an upshift. I'm not sure if something broke or if I hosed up the clutch release but I remember it being smooth. I was pinned against the tree so I had a hard time letting the corner worker know that I was ok. Didn't want to get out until it was safe but when I saw him sprinting across the track I figured it was shut down and I crawled out the passenger side. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaIzFCkL51w

I think the whole rest of the 3Balls staff jumped in the truck to come get me and after the medics cleared me I posed in front of the car and we pulled it out.

Was looking good with my new hood beforehand. Now I need a new fender, tie rods, LCA bushing and to straighten the shock mounting arm thingie. I think I should be good to go by the 3Balls charity event at Waterford Hills Road Racing on 6/21.

To me it felt a lot like going to XP10s from street pads in magnitude... I completely used them up in two days at Road Atlanta and two days at Mid-Ohio on my fat (3400lbs) 370Z though. Probably most of that was at Mid-Ohio though since it was essentially full on open track.

Well I finally got my 944 spec car in running condition and tested it out at Waterford Hills. It was immediately apparent that I'm not used to racing suspensions, brakes and tires, and I left a lot of time out on the track from early braking and low corner speeds. I felt like I was getting the hang of it and was shaving time with each lap but my second run was cut short due to a dummy in an 86, and rain was rolling in so I jumped ship.

Edit: The suspension definitely needs tuning. The shocks are in their loosest setting and the thing isn't even close to corner balanced. Also the delrin bushings in the rear most likely need some shaving and are too stiff. As a result the whole car is veeeery prone to oversteer.

Waterford is getting ROUGH. I hope they get the funds together for a repave. The OTD doesn't look too crowded at all for once.

I broke a front endlink on my 350Z there during our charity event a couple weeks ago. Talk about oversteer. The rear wanted to step out before the apex in the swamp every drat lap and I don't think I made one trip through the hairpin before the hill without sliding.

If there are any folks local to the Michigan tracks (Gingerman, Grattan, Waterford Hills, and Mid-Ohio) 3balls Racing is auctioning off a lifetime pass for charity. Right now the bid is $2000... a total steal considering this year we ran 4 Grattan weekends, 1 Gingerman weekend, 1 day at Mid-Ohio, and a weekend at Calabogie. Bidding is at the 3balls website. The proceeds from the auction will go to Karmanos Cancer Institute for research of a topical melanoma treatment for folks who can't tolerate normal chemotherapy.

I was thinking either the First S (http://www.ompamerica.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_4/products_id/635) or the 545 (http://www.gforce.com/products/suits/4545.php).
For just a little more you can get a custom suit. I think I gave right around $550 for my RaceQuip.
