It's odd.

I'm a straight white male; I've never faced discrimination in my life so this doesn't resonate with anything from my past. I grew up alongside the internet and have seen all the horrors it has to offer, from accidents to murders to war crimes, and while some of it has bothered me and much of it has angered me none of it has truly horrified me.

Yet I can't finish this video. There is nothing here that can be hidden behind or explained away by socioeconomic factors or religious culture.

Apparently this picture stirred some kind of emotion in people on Imgur.

As well it should.

A young man, maybe stupid, maybe not, has had his life destroyed because he signed on to fight a war he didn't understand in a land he'd only seen in movies and video games, against a people he'd been told all his life hated him for who he was.

The young men and women signing up to go overseas and kill strangers are the products of the same centuries-old propaganda machine as the children whose ignorant, racist Facebook and Twitter posts litter this thread. Their views are repugnant, but what more can you expect of people who have grown up in a nation that glorifies violence in the name of defending vague ideals of "freedom" and Christian values? Is a kid who grew up in Arkansas, in a family and social group who instilled in him the values of Jesus and Murrica and who indoctrinated him in Western propaganda any worse than a kid who grew up in Pakistan who decided to take up arms for the causes he was indoctrinated into?

Human psychology is a bitch and our free will is not nearly so free as we like to think.

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

It was mentioned, but /r/ShitRedditSays is actually an entire sub-community unto itself, formed originally by SA posters and with links to SRS reddits focused on myriad topics in the sidebar. Other quality reddits have been mentioned on the previous page and there are additional alternatives to the terrible defaults, such as /r/AtheismPlus and /r/AskScience which are more tightly moderated. If you poke around a bit, especially in the SRS subs, you can find decent political reddits as well.

Firearms are, to me, a difficult issue. I disagree with the seemingly pathological aversion to weapons that Liberals have and believe that the free ownership of weapons is a key component of ensuring self-determination, especially among the underprivileged lower classes for whom society provides little security. However, America's grotesque gun culture and hideous crime rates provide a sharp rebuke of this idea that people should freely possess weapons.

America is quite obviously doing it wrong and requires better gun control legislation combined with active enforcement, but I remain unconvinced that utterly disarming the populace is acceptable. It is my opinion that crime, violent and otherwise, is generally driven more by economic and social circumstance than by access to weapons. Abolish poverty and the Capitalist system which reinforces it and, aside from crimes of passion, criminal offenses will drastically lower in frequency.

Given the ongoing march of globalization combined with the increasingly accelerated automation of most industries a vote for a union today might very well be a vote for being jobless in a year's time.

Technology and the concentration of wealth in a new global class which can freely move both themselves and their production between nations allow capitalists to do an end run around unions.

ISIS may at some point, if they are very lucky and American security agencies are very stupid, manage to pull off a major terrorist attack which kills a few thousand people.

That ain't poo poo, more Americans died in September 2001 in car accidents than were killed in the WTC attack.

ISIS' real potential threat to America is the indirect damage they cause via America's inevitable response being to go forth and invade a sovereign nation or two, leading to a million or more deaths overseas, destabilizing an entire region even further than it already was, destroying its own economy and opening the door to another decade of extremist reactionary politics chipping away at what little of worth American society has left.

The real tragedy of September 11 2001 wasn't a couple buildings falling down, it was what came after.

The two NYPD officers murdered in their car were killed by a single mentally ill individual independent of any movement and the resulting retraction of abusive policing has not been done out of enlightenment on the NYPD's part but as a political stunt meant to further reinforce the existing authoritarian status quo.
