Toxicology, the only jobs I've been able to find don't pay enough to afford the rent for the area they are in and the one's that do pay a living wage want a PhD/MS. For example there are jobs for research assistants that pay 15$/hr in New York City, you couldn't afford a refrigerator box's rent on that sort of pay there.

Sounds like you're in the northeast, and brother I can tell you that there are salaried (think $50k+) entry level jobs in that part of the country that could support your living expenses and don't require more than a BS. PM me your details if you have plat, I can check internal postings for a company in western CT. Think about your options before going down the military route, it's a pain in the rear end.

More like the CG has a chip on its shoulder for being "only" a uniformed service. DHS may look military sometimes, but it's not military.

EBB
Feb 15, 2005

I don't even know why you'd want to be associated with the CG since it meant munching on Napolitano's sniz at some point in the past decade.

Godholio posted:

By no meaningful definition is it a military force. At best, paramilitary. By mission, it's law enforcement and regulatory. As I understand it, Coast Guard falls under Title 10 when assets are transferred under DOD control for contingencies.

The CG claiming to be military (I'd also argue that military and "armed forces" aren't completely interchangeable as well) is like a NG guy claiming to be on active duty after he's transferred back to his state after a deployment.

Fake edit: Title 10 defines military departments as the AF, Army, and Navy depts. DHS is handled separately. But the CG is one of the armed forces..and alongside the NOAA and PHS, it's one of the uniformed services.

It doesn't maintain a military mission. But yes, they do have guns.

Bingo. That's why drills are called "Inactive Duty Training"- we're not activated under Title 10 or Title 32 for regular training, not even for AT. Our funding is federal, but we're a state force at the behest of the governor until federalized.

Is ROTC a good way of paying off student debt? The program here says it will pay off up to I think 50k in loans after graduation, but from what I read here they could be full of poo poo. I'll be graduating in the next two years and coming out of school with no student loan debt seems to good to be true.

The main catch being you're on the hook for at least four years of service after graduation. What are you majoring in?

EBB

You'll fit in well in the Infantry.

EBB
Feb 15, 2005

Let's assume you get a contract and some tuition assistance and jump forward to graduation. Are you willing to sign away a minimum of four years of your life (six reserve) for something you might absolutely hate but cannot quit for no other reason than having no debt?

EBB
Feb 15, 2005

My advice to you is to switch to a STEM major, get summer internships, and put the effort you'd have to put into ROTC into studying instead. You'll have student debt, but you'll be more employable than a vet with busted knees and a history degree.
