I'm gonna reply to this with a video of Professor Sugata Mitra giving a TED lecture on a similar experiment - he set up a computer in a remote Indian village and just left the locals (who were not only illiterate but had never seen a computer before) to get on with it. He came back a little while later and they were demanding "a faster processor and a better mouse" :v:

That's phenomenal. I've dealt with kids who had trouble in school, not because they were dumb, rather because the system did not fit them, so they lacked interest and got so-so grades. Although the idea of the granny cloud fits for now, one day those grannies won't be there any longer, and the then adult kids they've interacted with will be applying teaching methods that are probably yet remote to our consciousness. Also, what's concrete about Mitra's method is that it gives children the opportunity to take the initiative at an early age to acquire their own knowledge. I'm going to send this video to every parent I know.

I wonder that, too. Also, were he to be going back home, would he have a place where to stay? I'd love to help but right now buying groceries (nothing against the cab driver, he did a wonderful gesture in the circumstances) is only keeping him alive in his ongoing problem. I'd rather help him going back home if that's otherwise feasable for him. :unsmith:

Thanks in no small part to the help of goons from this thread, and the inspiration of knowing that people do care, he'll be flying home for good with two packs of gear on October 1st. The rest of his stuff will follow by truck on the 15th.

He said the biggest joy he's getting out of this, besides being home again, is that he'll be back in time for Veterans Day. He's going to stand outside the local VA cemetery with his Class A's on (dress uniform) to salute those who come to visit and pass on the love.

If I could hug each of you, I would.

Such great news! Thank you for the update. And if any goons are invested in actually helping Matthew with the move, kuddos to you. :)

Ekplixi posted:

Something that happened to me today:

I have a cat named Lucky who was born so weak and sick her mom couldn't care for her, and abandoned her. I found her and nursed her back to health myself, waking up every few hours to feed her and everything. She has grown into a healthy, happy cat who is very strongly bonded to me. She thinks of me as her mother because that's the mother she knew.

My cats recently found out they can get into my ceiling. I haven't figured out how to fix it yet - this just happened a week ago. They usually just went up there and came back down right away, but I realized I couldn't find Lucky. I waited for her to come back down but she didn't. The next day I looked for her, but couldn't find her. Today, I started to panic and climbed up into the attic. I called for her as I crawled around. My other cat, her brother, called out for her and I heard faint meows - she was responding! I knew she was alive and in the house!

I found an area where there wasn't any ceiling or insulation. It dropped off into a closet where our water heater is. The meows were coming from there. I shined my flashlight through the hole and two glowy green eyes looked up at me. I immediately ran to the closet, threw the door open, and grabbed my little girl. I was so happy she was okay.

What I keep thinking about is the way Lucky looked at me when she saw me looking down at her. You could see her body relax and this look in her eyes that I think anybody who's ever been around kids would know. It's the look you get when you see your mom and know everything is going to be okay.

Lucky is dirty but she's doing just fine. She's been rubbing her head on me all night. I'm so relieved she's here. I think she is too.

This cat has the right name and the right owner. :3:
