Occult Chronicles (Currently in Beta)
Map:

Trick taking card game:

Genre: Turn-based RPG, Board-game
Graphics: 2D room tiles and nice card and encounter art.
Platform: Windows.
Cost: $14.99/£10.43/€12.19

Occult Chronicles is an commercial strategy game with roguelike elements and a light Lovecraftian theme currently in Beta. It features perma-death and a randomly generated map. You are an Occult Defense Directorate (O.D.D.) agent on a mission in an old mansion, there are 4 different missions which affect what kind of encounters you'll find. All encounters (battles, spells, lore check, trap avoidance etc) are done via a card game where you have to score a certain number of tricks to succeed, your chances with the cards are affected by your stats which can be improved directly or through edges (read perks) by levelling up. After an encounter you are shown 10 face down cards and given a number to pick, if you won the encounter you'll likely find some good things (health, sanity, bullets) if you lost some bad things (losing sanity/health) amongst blank 'no effect' cards.

Luck does play quite a big part with the cards which is double edged, sometimes you'll lose an encounter due to a bad draw but on the results screen you'll draw only blanks so you end up losing nothing.

Bonus silly encounter:

Also, I'd consider Zafehouse: Diaries to be a roguelike as well. It has a randomly generated map, it's hard as gently caress, and though you manage a party, when someone dies, they stay that way. For my tastes, it's too complex and punishing for me to get more than ten minutes in, but my short experience with it sure makes it seem rogueish.

It really is hard, especially when relationships decay and/or you get one of those special events.

Or, worse, your only competent survivor is black, and everyone else is a racist. They die so fast. :(

The main problem with the game is that it's poorly paced. Your options are really limited if you want to get anything done fast enough to evacuate, and if you manage to barricade yourself up in the center fast enough without your survivors murdering the poo poo out of each-other, you've pretty much won.

Yeah :(
They released a new update last month with an apparently easier gamemode 'No Survivors':

quote:

You’ve been asking for a truly endless game mode and here it is! The biggest change you’ll notice in this new mode is that you start with just one survivor. Don’t worry, by searching the town or using a flashlight or beacon, you can find / attract survivors to boost your odds. Each survivor brings with them prejudices, items and even injuries, so you’ll need to carefully consider their inclusion. And, when the group reaches its capacity of five, it’s not you who decides who should go — your survivors will make that decision for you!

If you do reject a survivor, they’ll retaliate by stealing equipment, sabotaging barricades and setting traps, so be careful!

You won’t encounter the likes of the super zombie, lynch mob or the girl and her dangerous relatives either, but that’s only because No Survivors presents its own set of tribulations. You’ll have to track down resources, set up safehouses and try and keep zombie levels down by patrolling and sniping. If you don’t, locations will slowly be overrun, after which you won’t be able to access them.

On a different note had the shortest game of Occult Chronicles so far.

I rolled an accountant (bonuses to persuasion, a few random intellect items and a bonus to avoiding horror) promptly fell through a rotting floor after failing to grasp the edge. I found myself in an underground room and was attacked by the spawn of an elder god.

Game lasted 12 turns.

Occult Chronicles is pretty boss, I'm finally figuring out how to get places in it. I wish I knew how long you were supposed to take on each floor roughly speaking, though, I always end up going downstairs too early and getting my rear end kicked.

Also, it seems like every single character desperately needs Wands, if only because of the fifty billion horror checks.

I think for floors you should try to do all the starting floor then the first floor and then the attic above it, then go for downstairs as you'll have rewards from completing quests or beating/magicing up the encounters.

Yeah you tend to nee at least some Wands for horror, but if you keep it low-ish and focus on swords and cups you'll be able to do quite well breezing through the early encounters. This should allow you to use the skill points to buy an extra background that allows you to pump wands for later.

Hmmm.

I think also you need to know when to run away from things, especially if you aren't geared to beat them. With the roaming encounters you should try running and hiding:

Manual posted:

To lose a random encounter that is pursuing you, you need to move more than one room away from the encounter. If the encounter can not observe which door you went through contact is broken. Once contact is broken there is a chance based on the game difficulty and your hidden Luck attribute that the encounter will be removed from the game. Otherwise it will loiter or randomly choose an adjacent room to enter until it is removed from the board.

Other than that I dunno :shobon:.

Uncle Jam posted:

I'm going to go against the grain and recommend against putting down $20 for Occult Chronicles.

There are two reasons:

1. The trick taking 'game' is really simple, and feels more like manually executing dice rolls. It wouldn't be that bad except there are situations where you have to play the game so many times to resolve a single encounter. Something more geared like Shalandar would be amazing, but its about as shallow as 'War'.

Eh it isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it is meant to be like more interesting and strategic dice rolls, what with all the edges and inventory stuff. So rather than just getting a 'roll' you maybe have a brain in a jar reveal some cards to you, so you can use your luger to bump your cards up and win the scenario or cast an eldritch spell etc.

Uncle Jam posted:

2. The game is poorly balanced right now. You can get into an encounter you should win easily, and just draw a bunch of low cards. Then on the penalty draw you get pinged -2 swords and suddenly you get 1 trick per game to make 7 points which can only be resolved with a face card taking another face card of the same suit in one chance. Meanwhile you have permanents that block damage on the penalty draw so you are forced to play for the unlikely occurrence of two face cards. God help you if you get more stat debuffs.

I don't really agree, often you can lose encounters and get full sets of no effects (unless you have a lot of psychic pushback) and even if not you still have the chance of your talismans blocking the result. Whilst if you do get hit by a debuff it is debilitating, it fits thematically. You are just a human fighting supernatural lovecraftian monsters, you are kind of fragile.

Also the debuffs are clearly meant to be permanent I mean you don't heal a missing eye easily. (Of course you can heal them via certain events and cards!)

Whilst you might have your stats lowered you don't end up drawing 1 card for 1 trick forever as there is a built in mechanic to help you:

Determination posted:

If you are attempting a particularly difficult challenge and you are drawing less than 5 cards or less than 5 trick cards are being placed on the board, then after you fail a challenge, if you attempt the exact same challenge again you will receive a +1 bonus to cards drawn and tricks on the board each time that you fail until you are drawing at least 5 cards and at least 5 cards are played to the board. If you leave the encounter or pick a different option type (challenge) then the bonus is reset back to 0 and will only increment again if you fail the challenge.

Uncle Jam posted:

You can get coins to rebuy stats (sometimes, what determines the categories?!?) but they are too rare compared to the debuffs.

It should say when you are picking which extra background which stats you will be able to buy, so certain magic based ones will only let you buy pentacles, whearas one of the hybrid ones could let you get cups and wands etc.

The basement in Occult Chronicles really has some nice gently caress you traps.

Also for others playing OC one thing I'd missed is that if you have any item/feat/spell cards you can right click them to discard them in exchange for experience tokens.

Man, I wish I'd known on my win, I was rolling with items.

And yeah, the basement traps are something else. Entire rooms of acid traps with a very real possibility of an 'Instant Death' card attached. Spending most of your time farming quests in the floors above seems like the best way to play, then hunting down the 'reveal final room' item.

I really like the instant death chance things, especially when they are attached to encounters that fit thematically. Like if you lose at the chess game or aren't strong enough inside the iron maiden.

A good build I had was soldier and just beating everything I could, no quests just smashing. Anything that couldn't be smashed was to be fled from. It went well until a very bad draw of cards (like aces 2s and 3s ugh) meant a grenade trap got the better of me.

Occult Chronicles win! A mild mannered accountant named Daisy defeated an alien invasion force!

Pentangles was actually at 7 for most of the game due to having a Major Arcana that boosted them by 2 but I used the card to make sure of victory in the final encounter. Also my low health and -2 luck came about from attempts at breaking the alien doors down right at the end, necessitating the use of my other MA cards.

For the additional backgrounds I took Melee weapon specialist for more swords and because I had the axe and crowbar and Athletics specialist to help with the basement traps.

Most of my Pentangles came from items like holy water, manuscripts, a MA card and the familiar.

Inventory (that I remember): Axe, Crowbar, Remington Shotgun, Candle, Cacodaemon Familiar, Holy Water, Pnakotic manuscripts.
Feats: Whirldwind, Flash of Genius.
Psychic abilities: The Third Eye, Vaporize Mind (super useful!)
Spells: Visions of the Dreamer
Injuries: Bruises all over, Broken Collar Bone.

Feats:
Iron Stomach 5/5 (Bonuses to horror checks.)
Museum Curator 1/1 (Bonus for Puzzles/lore.)
Capo Ferro 1/1 (Long blade bonus.)
Mechanical Monster Slayer 1/1 (Chance to get extra sword items.)
Nimble feet 1/4 (Avoid traps bonus)
Raconteur 1/1 (Persuasion/deception bonus.)
Dances With Ghosts 1/1 (Chance to avoid sanity loss.)
Lightning Reflexes 2/4 (Avoid traps bonus.)

Also if you are playing a character geared towards certain stats feel free to just flee anything that focuses on your weaker stats and comeback when/if you feel you can take it on. So if you have mainly swords and cups and encounter something that needs high pentangles or wands, just flee and and try again later.

An update for Occult Chronicles:

quote:

Added 2 New Encounters for the basement/dungeon levels. One is a tribute to an old D & D dungeon nemesis and the other tips its hat to a famous B.P.R.D. agent…no not the big red guy.

The item numbers on the right side of the item tray now turn green when you have an item that can be used during a challenge but that tab has not been selected.

Horror challenges now only happen once for each specific named encounter. i.e. if you have seen the zombies random encounter you don’t get the horror challenge again if you happen to bump into more zombies later on

The frequency of random encounters has been decreased further

The intensity of health loss and sanity loss cards has been toned down significantly to reduce the chance of large number penalties in a single failed encounter if you are at moderate or less health or sanity points. i.e. the more severe algorithm operates when you have high health and sanity points

Numerous bug fixes and display issues corrected

Numerous text errors corrected

With the lower amount of horror checks a non wand heavy agent may be less painful to play.

Edit:

Also it is on Halloween Sale for $13.13 so if you are interested in buying it now might be a good time.

It is really fun, although if you don't like fast action roguelikes it probably won't be for you.

For people who might be interested, some stuff about Nuclear Throne:

You pick a character at the start, they all have different abilities you can activate (the throne butt upgrade can enhance the ability). Killing enemies and breaking glowing cores drops you rads which are basically EXP, if you gain a level when you go through the end of level portal you pick an upgrade out of 4 randomly selected ones.

There are various types of weapons with their own ammo and melee weapons which don't tend to use ammo, you can only hold 2 weapons so you might be often picking up different guns if you run out of ammo.

Might make a thread for it.

That's why I like Binding of Isaac 95% of the time, the rest is near the end where things get really hectic and annoying.

You might find Nuclear Throne fun, as whilst there are often a lot of bullets there is a lot of ways to avoid them, the easiest being shoot everything.

Certain character's abilities really help; like Crystal being able to turn into a massive crystal which deflects all bullets, or Eyes whose special bends the bullets around you or Chicken slowing down everything close to you so you might have a better chance to react. Failing that all melee weapons if swung at the bullets will deflect them back the way they came.

Also there is a mutation that slows down all enemy bullets making it way easier.

quote:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/failbetter/sunless-sea
Sunless Sea is a game of exploration, survival and loneliness set in the award-winning Victorian Gothic universe of Fallen London. Take the helm of your customised steamship and set sail for the unknown! Light and darkness are your greatest allies, but a stout set of cannon and a gunnery officer with a grudge will come in useful too.

And Sunless Sea is a game of stories; the dark pasts of your crew, the hidden coves of the soul-smugglers, the tentacled nemesis that you chased from Hunter’s Keep to the shores of the Elder Continent.

Your choices will determine the events of every game. Will you return to Fallen London with a hold full of loot or succumb to madness and cannibalism on the black waters? Will you free the colonies of the Carnelian Coast, or keep them in the Empire’s grip? Will you betray your father’s legacy or reclaim it?

You've got roguelike elements such as the map being different every time, having to manage supplies and fuel for your ship as well as terror and hunger for your crew, etc. As well as strong (random) story focus with events and crew having different interactions. etc.

I posted this in the Kickstarter thread a few days ago but I figured it deserves to go here too. Darkest Dungeon released a PAX gameplay video on YouTube which shows off about 20 minutes worth of play going on a quest to kill a necromancer. It's pretty cool.

I love the art and animations, it looks amazing.
