Not that it happens often, but those bugs can cover up part of the play. Plus it's just nice for replays to have a clean screen.  One of the only things that other industries can pick up from video games is UI design for on-screen stats.

He has really slipped (being 83 doesn't help) so I don't care much for this decision. e: I saw on twitter that some 83 year old announcer signed a new agreement earlier this week, but I can't remember who and I guess it wasn't Marv. Also, why the hell does that page on NBA.com prevent my browser from using the Alt+D to get to the address bar quickly? Their new site redesign sucks balls.
