Clifton Caldwell, a local merchant, has recently purchased a small castle, located a few miles out of town. The castle had not been occupied for some time. Clifton had purchased the castle for a ridiculously high price, since he had always wanted to own one. But when he went to visit his new home, he found that it was overrun by monsters! He was lucky to escape with his life. He has hired a party of adventurers (the player characters) to rid the castle of its monstrous inhabitants so that he can move in.

THE CALL TO ADVENTURE COMES...

Looking for 4-8 players to play through this module which is a series of mini-adventures designed to take a player from level 1 to level 3. At that point, if momentum and interest are good we can continue on to another module or just go campaigning towards whatever.

Follow standard guidelines for character creation. I'll review submissions and address anything that needs addressing, otherwise, once we have a good amount of players I'll start the game.

Play-by-Post being what it is, I understand that things may slow down and pick up depending on player availability. I just ask that if you wish to leave the game, just say so, there will be no hard feelings. I will usually be able to get more than one post up in a day, and in the event that I become busy, sick, or otherwise unavailable, I will let you know.

If you need help or have any questions feel free to post them here or PM me. I'm also available on IRC in #idlespace intermittently, if you catch me we can discuss things.

---

Edit Log:
  • Rules: Basic Set Player's Manual (BECMI ed.)(Basic)
  • Important!: In Character Creation, you can re-roll the lowest attribute.
  • Also Important!: If you have Labyrinth Lord or B/X. I'll help you convert. It really isn't all that different. There are some mechanics changes from BECMI and B/X. Like Class edits and spells per day after level 5 and scaling for higher level system and Immortality, but your experience won't change that much all in all. ALSO! Rules Cyclopedia content is acceptable.
  • I prefer Orokos for rolling, but I'll accept invisible castle rolls as well. Also if your re-roll is lower than the original score, keep original. I'm not that cruel.

Wyndham Thornpicker
Halfling: Veteran
Level 1, XP: 51

Wyndham had lived in his idyllic village for his whole life. It was a peaceful, serene, friendly place, where any conflict could be solved with a flagon of ale and a sing-a-long, the weather was always bright and clear, and everybody got along.

It was boring.

He may not be the sharpest arrow in the quiver, and his small stature means he hasn't the strength of a human warrior, the pickpocketing skills he picked up trying to bring some excitement into his sleepy town have served him well, as does his desire to do something new and exciting. And if it's dangerous, all the better...

Amelaide Florantha Starfall
Elf: Veteran-Medium
Level 1, XP: 0 (+5%)

Amelaide Florantha Starfall, Ame for short, was raised a high noble of the Starfall family, the daughter of Count Triswin Starfall and Lady Dotta Starfall, who held a small parcel a land under the Lord Wizard Rainwinds. She grew up with her older brother and younger sister in the safety of the silver-leafed forests of the Lord Wizard's stronghold. She used to spend evening under starlight and mornings in the mistfallen dew, running barefoot through the beautiful woods. As she grew, her father taught her magic, her mother trained her in courtly politics and and manipulation, and Frain the weapon master drilled her in the the classical Elven ways of arms and armor. Frain gave her something else, though: stories about the world, and his time walking through it, weaving for her magical tales about hiding from giants and exploring goblin-filled tombs.

When she came of age, Ame was to be married off to a an elf of station whose marriage would strengthen political connections, but there was unrest in the land: orcs and goblins came to live in the forest, and began to wage war on the stronghold of Lord Wizard Rainwinds. A little over a month ago, these beasts came over the wall, razing the city. Ame fled with her siblings into the silver-leafed forest of their childhoods, now lit with torches and filled with smoke as their ancient home was destroyed. As the orcs pursued them, they got lost from one another, and Ame ended up falling down a waterfall and found herself on a riverbank miles away.

She was left with her trusty bow, a Solstice present from her mother, and one of her father's scale coats, but little else: she managed to grab her spellbook in the chaos, and her brother had given her a stocked backpack and a small pouch of gold as they fled through the forest. Other than that, she has her traveling cloak and a single change of clothes, but that's the least of her trouble: her family are missing---or maybe dead, and Ame cannot return home.

She's been wandering for the last month, learning about the world beyond the forest and looking for jobs or opportunities to amass the money necessary to hire retainers to help find her family: she can't do it alone, and it's hard to find someone to trust. But Frain's stories always ended in gold and riches, so when Ame found the job posting for adventurers with payment, she was certain it would be a first step.

Olaf Helmsplitter

Olaf, of the illustrious clan Helmsplitter, was your typical dwarf. Greatly concerned with gold, and the acquisition of said gold, fraught with peril that he was not admiring gold enough, and well in need of a really good fight. He was not however all that keen on mining gold. Yes he loved gold, yes he loved to feel gold, to smell it, to gaze upon it. But mining it, not so much.

Instead he found that he had a knack for fighting, and a love for ale, and his desire for the acquisition for gold, but the lack of desire to mine it, set him out on his own into the big wide world above. Now he travels the land, working as a mercenary and adventurer, earning, or taking, his gold the fun way. Through violence.

Adrian has completed his apprenticeship...barely. He's competetant enough, really. At least, he knows which end of the wand to point (He learned that the hard way). It's just...he gets flustered easily, especially around strangers. But still, maybe it's just that he needs more seasoning. After all, aren't high level wizards some of the most feared and respected people in the world? It's just that no one tells you how you get to that point, especially when you're facing big, mean things that can kill you by stepping on you. So, Adrian is hoping to find some adventurers to help him get that experience.(preferably large strong ones with big weapons who will get between him and the things that want to kill him.)

Roger

Brash and boisterous, Roger is a noble and free spirit. Having joined a lawful and well doing mercenary troupe when he was of age, shortly after his father fell in battle and his mother fell of illness, a chance encounter with an evil wizard has left Roger shaken. The would-be warrior has left the troupe to make his way as an adventurer, willing even to travel with wizards - if not entirely trusting of them.

Strong though Wyndham's constitution is, he is not resistant to good advice. He sheepishly places the short sword back on the rack and picks up the sling with 30 sling stones.

@tenniseveryone: You get +5% to XP for your Dex. Also check out your INT mod. I also think your AC should be 5(Leather: 7 - 2 from +2 Dex). I need to check on your saving throw table too. I'll get back to you on that and let you know if I see anything else.

@QuantumNinja: +5% to XP for STR. Calculate your encumbrance. Other than that, I think it all checks out. I'll be going over everything again as we approach game time for final confirmation.

@Ryuujin: +5% to XP for your PR. Calculate your encumbrance. Everything else looks good. I'll give a final look over when we approach game time.

@Epicurius: We've been in talks IRC so I'll await your edits.

@Hashtag Yoloswag: +5% to XP for PR. Calculate your encumbrance. Everything else looks good. I'll give final confirmation as game time draws nearer.

@Ritorix: +5% to XP for PR. Calculate your encumbrance. Everything else looks good. I'll give final confirmation later!

@Rulebook Heavily: Looks good. I'll give it final look over when it's closer to Game time.

@Alouicious: I'll let you take those spells since it's opposite of what was offered earlier. +5% to XP for PR. Calculate your encumbrance. Looks good, I'll give final confirmations prior to game launch.

@ProfessorCirno: Good god... is anything hitting you? Looks good. Calculate encumbrance. +5% to XP for PR. I'll give final confirmation close to game time.

If I missed anything or you have questions, feel free to point it out/ask and I'll get back to you.

Everything is looking great and I'm glad to have gotten all these lovely apps so quickly. I look forward to a cool game.

I'll give everyone til Monday to wrap things up and then it'll be go time. I'm going to close down recruitment at this point though since 9 of you have already put something in be it just stat rolls or full sheets, and others of you have voiced interest.

If encumbrance becomes too much of a hassle to keep up with, I'll do away with it. Bookkeeping is a beating for all of us. We'll see how it goes first though.

Here's how it works:

-If you're in leather or no armor, you and your equipment is Encumbrance 300cn and you have no penalties to movement.
-If you're in heavy armor, your encumbrance is 700cn and you suffer the penalties on my character sheet.
-Strength and Con don't affect this in any way. (Yeah, weird innit.)
-Your maximum encumbrance is 2400cn.

The table for movement is on page 61.

This is absolutely correct. Sorry for misstating the need to calculate. You are all at the appropriate levels for your equipment, 300/700cn.

Be sure to just take the lower encumbrance defaults of 300/700 for your gear and equipment package from page 61 of the BECMI rules as Rulebook Heavily mentioned. Rules Cyclopedia starts listing out gear weight, which makes logical sense, but what you have is what you have and anything additional will add on weight. I'll specify the weight of goods and or treasure received when you collect it. So don't worry about calculations or anything for now.

I hope it will be fun! I think it will be :)

I am going to avoid using variant rules and the likes, but I'll delineate all of that prior to the start of the game so we are all on the same page.

The Rhyssons have worked the mines round here for generations. Being a naturally gregarious soul, Huw was often chosen to represent the mine in dealings with the neighbours. Huw was a regular visitor to Mr. Caldwell's shop, and knew the family quite well. It's been a long five years at the most recent coalface, and Huw felt ready for a change of scenery. When Mr. Caldwell put the word out that he was looking for adventurers, he decided to go and help his old family friend. That such a selfless act would get him away from all those accusations of adultery and affairs with half the lady dwarves in the mine is a mere coincidence.

Sorry, came across some unexpected "walking" pneumonia(whatever that means). Your sheets look good, I think I saw few things that I might have had questions about, but I'll have the final clearing or edit requests up here after a while. Game thread still ETA Monday. @tenniseveryone: Your standard encumbrance is 300cn and movement capabilities will correspond to that.

Ok, I re-went through everything and it all looks good to me. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Like I said, Game thread will go up tomorrow at some point. I'll be shooting for earlier in the day, but for sure sometime tomorrow.
