I'm genuinely interested in this as most earlier stuff I've heard is pretty thug or positive with the exception of maybe like some anticon stuff or sage Francis. Who else makes opressivly negative rap?

Edit: I really like devil rap or really most stuff like that but it's still pretty full of braggadocio but that's still pretty much gangster rap and not really self critical
I'd just maybe add Shyne, I don't think anyone mentioned him. Godfather Buried Alive is a pretty cool album, and Shyne tends to have a lot of nihilistic/dark/suicidal/doomed vibes in his gangsta rap at times.

It's an album made in the middle of his ten year jail sentence, so it's bound to have some oppressive vibes. Too bad he became super weird and lovely out of jail though.

I really like that new ASAP Rocky the more and more I listen to it. It's good for a onetime thing, it's different. I think the disjointed feeling actually contributes to me liking it. Those initial verses and the beat changes in the second half. Can't wait for the next album.

Beg For Mercy still holds up as a pretty great album, it's the peak quintessential Shady/Aftermath 2000s sound.

I bought it until you started complimenting Yayo. Like, one of the major reasons Beg For Mercy is the best they'll ever do is Yayo being in jail. He's okay being on like 1-2 songs an album.

the three man Banks-50-Buck dynamic is just right in terms of balance anyway. I admit it sounded cool as a kid that one week where it seemed like Game was gonna be part of G-Unit...but it probably would've gotten crowded.

There's alot of reasons I don't like J Cole, but usually it's just for his lovely, uninspiring music.

This time, it's his lack of any sort of actual knowledge on a subject being replaced with "that's just how I feel".

In multiple instances in this video he's literally like "It seems like there's no answer to that impossible question" when usually it's some 10th grade poo poo.

I appreciate anyone trying to be "concious" but this dude keeps it weak forever and ever. Then he says some "concious" poo poo to try to distract from his weak music. Blame it on "THE SYSTEM" all you want. Your loving music loving sucks J Cole.

Yeah, I get and understand this, but there are still like 2-3 decent songs off Born Sinner and 2-3 decent songs from his mixtapes/stuff before that, soooo
I mean that's more than some rappers I don't gently caress with at all
Though saying that his new album has such uninspiring generic vibes (I hadn't even noticed it had come out??) that I haven't even delved into it to see if there are...2-3 decent songs

JEsus Tetsuo and Youth is one of those albums that gains value the more you delve into it. I'm so clueless I only just saw the famous-baby-album-cover part of Adoration of the Magi's chorus. The more I listen to this the more I appreciate (almost) every song.

eh, I kind of wish he'd done something more with Trent Reznor since Niggy Tardust was so good, sounded pretty ahead of its time at the time, and basically a way earlier/better Yeezus but I guess you can't just do The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust II.

Yeah, I mean my favorite Kanye album has always been Late Registration not MBDTF but every year I go back to it and College Dropout they seem to hold up less and less somehow (probably because I've just listened to them too much/nostalgia). I agree with people who feel Graduation wasn't super essential if only because it kind of feels like the Kanye album that drifted by me without much impact.
As long as he actually raps for most of this new album I'll be satisfied.

edit: also I feel like everytime someone brought up Spark Master Tape there'd be some dude going "Pshhh, he's just an inferior version of X" but I don't remember exactly what. Can anyone fill for X, because I'm going through withdrawal with this mystery man mystery disappeared and no sign of Silhouette of a Sunkken City any time soon.

I've always had difficulty with Kendrick's robotic look-look-I-can-rap-really-fast monotone style forever tbh, which I concede is more of a comment on me than on Kendrick, there's just little arbitrary things that can stop you from connecting to legitimately good artists. Coupling robovoice with the jazz stuff it's just not the sort of vibes I can really connect with, but this is probably an album that'll blow my mind when I'm smoking a blunt out on my balcony at night or something so I'll save it for then. (I did enjoy a lot of Section.80 though and obviously I couldn't resist a lot of GKMC)
