i don't know why you'd think his books are overwritten or turgid. maybe you were reading a don delillo novel and through sheer stupidity thought you were reading something by CM. for a modern "literary" writer. cormac mccarthy is pretty straightforward and easy-to-read

I don't even remember him using unconventional punctuation in The Road, maybe he's just so good at it it doesn't even register as annoying. i agree it's typically just a gimmick tho
