Up until a few years ago, there were several college/university PD's in Illinois that were not allowed to carry. I'm only aware of one college PD that doesn't carry right now, and that may have changed since I last heard.

Over here cops don't really need guns, they are only needed in exceptionally rare circumstances and the majority of handgun seizures are still made by unarmed officers. I agree policing Baltimore or LA is a different kettle of fish to policing London and that police need to carry guns to keep ~~the minority population down~~ themselves safe.

I wouldn't do a job where there was even an "exceptionally rare" chance I could get shot or severely injured without carrying the means to defend myself.

Police get shot in places other than big cities. A Texas police chief was just shot to death trying to arrest a small town kid for graffiti.
