007: License to Fail - 007 Legends LP

Developed by Eurocom and Published by Activision, 007 Legends was released in 2012 on all platforms (PC, XBOX 360, PS3 and Wii U), the game revolves around several of James Bond's most famous exploits. In all, the game explores 5 different movies (With a 6th added via DLC): Goldfinger, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, License To Kill, Die Another Day and Moonraker (Skyfall is the DLC movie). The Skyfall DLC is no longer accessible because Activision lost the license to sell James Bond games and thus, anyone who didn't get the content (like me) is no longer able to download it.

The developers took liberties in the retelling of these stories, some more noticeable than others, as well as modernizing the stories to include more recent technologies or developments. I heavily recommend watching the movie versions of each segment that we will come across.

The game received mixed reviews and has settled at 16% and 26% rankings on gamerankings and metacritic, respectively. While it certainly isn't the worst game I've ever played, it doesn't deserve being compared to games like Big Rigs or Ride to Hell. The game was reviewed so poorly that Activision lost the license and it was eventually pulled from Amazon and Steam catalogs and as such is very hard to get a copy for the PC, whereas console copies are easier to come by.

But enough with criticism and text, join Chaos Argate and I on our failure adventure!

Also, holy poo poo, you really can't get the Skyfall DLC anymore? That's amazing. Because without it, the game has no structured ending.

I find it would've been really hard to pick between Dr. No, From Russia With Love and Goldfinger but, no matter what you pick, it would have some major issues. Personally, I'd really like the see a Dr. No game.

I never played From Russian With Love, maybe I'll get it someday... As for Fort Knox and later levels, I don't mind the Call of Duty-ness that much. It's disappointing that they never tried to make anything look unique like the HUD elements.

And one (or both) of us is going to get a console version to see if we can get the DLC.

I think it's less the "CODification" and more the outright taking specific details from the series. Like the general CODification would be the arcadey fast-paced gameplay with regenerating health, the linear environments packed with enemies, the predominate use of iron sights for accurate aiming, and the limited ability to customize guns in single and multiplayer. What I find more interesting is how you can point out very specific things that are either emulating or outright copying parts of it. It's like they just took the engine and assets and made a lovely licensed FPS from it. Like if someone had made a James Bond total conversion mod for Call of Duty 4, but really badly.

I actually like this game after having played it to completion and the CoD-ified portions of it aren't that big a deal. I think my main gripe is that it lacks any sort of style or unique look that differentiates it from the CoD games. I also appreciate the different things they tried but I wish the execution was better.

The Evolution of Felix Leiter

Jack Lord

One of the best portrayals of Felix Leiter came in the first movie he was featured in, Dr. No. I've never read any of the books, but Wikipedia is quick to point out that Leiter was never part of the original story which makes his inclusion special and even though he doesn't do much in the movie, he still manages to stand out and definitely looks the part for a CIA version of Bond.

Cec Linder

Cec Linder played the version of Felix Leiter in Goldfinger and looks nothing like Jack Lord. Apparently, Jack Lord demanded more screen time and a higher pay which is why he didn't reprise his role. To me, Linder always looked out of place as Felix but I think that of about half the actors who played that character :v:.

Rik Van Nutter

For Thunderball, Felix Leiter was played by Rik Van Nutter. Felix plays a bigger part than previous iterations, directly helping to find the stolen nukes alongside James Bond. He looks the part, except for maybe being 10 years too old.

Norman Burton

Felix Leiter was played by Norman Burton in the movie Diamonds are Forever. Burton doesn't look the part at all and his character never seemed to be competent. That and, you know, it's Diamonds are Forever.

David Hedison

David Hedison was the first person to play Felix Leiter twice, although not consecutively. He first starred in Live and Let Die and returned for License to Kill. Moore and Hedison were friends, which helped him get the part as they could better work off of eachother. All in all, Hedison's a pretty good Felix Leiter.

John Terry

The most forgettable Felix Leiter was played by John Terry in a very brief appearance. I don't have anything to say about this Leiter.

Jeffrey Wright

One of the best Leiters, in my opinion, and definitely a great showing in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. Now excuse me while I go watch Casino Royale for the umpteenth time.

The ejector seat sequence in the game was actually pretty cleverly constructed, as it bears a great resemblance to the 1960s film version updated for modern technology: Bond is captured while breaking into Goldfinger's factory and forced to drive himself to his death at gunpoint, ejects the unwanted passenger, and then gets attacked while trying to drive away (in the film it's just a bunch of mooks and I think a trick involving spotlights) which results in him crashing and being captured for real.

I don't know the reason given in the game for Bond's life being spared, but in the film Bond lies about MI6 knowing about his Fort Knox attack (when he really knows nothing but hearing "Operation Grand Slam" mentioned by Ling) and Goldfinger decides to let him live to mislead MI6 into thinking that Bond has everything under control without interfering.

In the movie Goldfinger, Bond tries to escape by car from Auric's facility grounds but is blocked by a granny at the gate with an MP-40. Bond refuses to add vehicular manslaughter to his bucket list and chooses to instead drive back to the main buildings. While trying to escape Oddjob and co, Bond is TRICKED BY HIS OWN LIGHTS IN A MIRROR THAT WOULD NOT WORK. That series of events is incredibly dumb and I really hate that James Bond was somehow tricked by his own car lights, which totally wouldn't work that way.

The reason in the game is exactly the same as the movie. Bond bluffs about knowledge of Operation Grand Slam and Goldfinger believes him.

I don't even know why I have spoiler tags. Reader, have you watched Goldfinger before? If not, go watch it, its fun.

As for the fights, I'm surprised they didn't have quick-time events that had more to do with the environment you're in since they seem to be deliberately placed in specific locations. Most James Bond fistfights aren't just straight up fights but involve the scenery or a gadget/tool, but that obviously depends on which Bond you look at. You could have QTEs where you have to mash 1 or 2 buttons to stop an attacker from killing you while you deliver a counter-blow right after or maybe pressing buttons to throw scenery objects/items (Maybe some folders in the Fort Knox fight?) or more. And it's not like the mashing ones need to be hard, because gently caress having to do THOSE kinds of QTE multiple times just to pass some arbitrary checkpoint.

In a sentence, the melee fights forced upon the player in 007 Legends would be much better if they changed literally anything about them instead of forcing you to follow the simplest of QTEs for over a minute which eliminates all tension the developers tried to invoke.

See, I love Goldeneye a lot more because it feels like they were bringing Bond into the modern action age. The Dalton and later Moore films retained baggage dating back to the 1960s, and as much as I love the entire series I can't escape the fact that they spent the 80s feeling like a "sexist, misogynistic dinosaur." Goldeneye took long enough to be made that the Cold War ended, and they made it without any of the baggage that kept the films in the same style for over twenty years. The cinematography, acting, action sequences, everything is completely different. But unlike the Craig films, which went too far with the changes, everything still feels like Bond.

If you want a good example of brilliance, watch the scene in the statue park. I think every film student should watch that scene.

This is especially true for The Living Daylights with Dalton. He gets a few dumb one liners that seem out of place and the plot/characters seem way too caricaturized. In License To Kill, Dalton plays a much more brooding and serious Bond and, along with the plot, really brings out a fresh Bond you didn't see with Moore.

Concept Art, Production and Gadget shots and background information

007 Legends tries to dish out information about the Bond series in bite-sized portions, and forcing you to replay levels, by collecting items strewn about the levels and by completing secondary objectives and/or trials.

In general, the items relating to people will have some connection to them. For instance, Auric Goldfinger's golden revolver or a model of the plane he uses at the end of Goldfinger (the movie), but there are also other items just lying around: Cellphones, dossiers, wallets and usb drives. Generally speaking, the dossiers and USB sticks will contain info regarding the different criminal organisations you're fighting and the cellphones and wallets fill out the different bios you can look at.

The info is nice if you know literally nothing about the different characters, wish to refresh your memory or look for little tidbits that the movies may have glossed over or omitted.

The game also has trials that are sometimes neat, sometimes total crap. Completing them and generally collecting things unlocks concept art, production shots from the movies or photos of the different gadgets used by Bond, in their respective movies. I've kept them all in their original sizes save a small few in case anyone wants them. I would say it's pretty cool to have unlockable content but you can't unlock anything for your gameplay and, as far as I know, there's cheat codes but they don't do much aside from unlocking some weapons or characters for multiplayer. Forgotten are the days of Paintball mode and DK mode. :smith:

Also, Eurocom, was there nothing you could do about the text over the art assets you try to show off? Or even an export function or something? No wonder you guys went under.

I think the "issue" with the Golden Gun was that it has a great backstory to it. It's the gun that kills in one shot, except that (I guess?) people tend to forget that it was Scaramanga who made that gun so deadly. So he only needed one shot, but how do you translate that into a video game weapon? Obviously you make it a one shot, one kill weapon and give it its own game mode in Goldeneye. It becomes super popular and well-known, so of course other developers try to cash in on previous successes.

I honestly don't have a problem with the Golden Gun, I just wish they wouldn't try to convince be that the Golden Gun was anything but a single shot, ergonomic nightmare assembled from a vintage golden cigarette holder.
