If you guys want to be evil here is how. Start a new bitcoin block chain, call it starcoin. Set up a website that promotes starcoin. Watch the idiots flock to it like the new gold rush. Have website crash in 2 weeks. Profit. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=259012.0 Oh, nevermind.

It can only be these two things ......

It's completely nonsensical if you wanted to make a currency that people actually used to buy things instead of horde or speculate with. AFAIK only dogecoin doesn't which makes dog based meme money literally the best internet coins.

There's a statistic going around stating that around 48% of produced bitcoins were stolen. It's gold for the computing generation without the messy physical product or legislation intended to protect consumers. So yeah, there are actual attempts to corner the market on something entirely fictional. It's very like SC, as I'm betting some of the whales are assuming that their buy in will increase in value. I remember the good old days - the days when China was just a few days more away from turning everyone into monocle wearing millionaires, altcoins were flaring with thousands of percent price movements, and Mt-Gox was just weeks away from introducing their new trading engine and adding further momentum not only to BTC but also to its little sibling, the cult that called it "Rise of the Chicken" - back when people were shouting "hold the lines, Defenses-up and This is Sparta (kid you not)" when live commentating the trading chats and volatility of the markets, fighting the fight of fiat vs. cryptocurrencies - a weird fusion of geek- and finance culture took ahold, rumour milling went awild - BTC was just riding above USD 1k per BTC and people still had dreams and hopes of Bitcoin making them the first Trillionaires and if not that, what is a millionaire more on this planet? Because Bitcoin Prices as we all knew back then, can only go up... there's no barrier, there's only deflation - obviously communities circle jerked about how being richer than all those idiots coming late to the party was a well deserved side effect and benefit to those chosen few buying early into the madness of being courageous enough to pour their mortgages and future well being into the face of non-believers and party poopers. We all thought we would cure the world from fat cats, politics and all wealth distribution problems. And then someone spilled his double latte with cream... and it all went into shambles - to these days gee... err investors are debating why this all was actually good news for bitcoin, that all of it happened, awating the second coming of a new boom, to buy back into fiat - while greed of the holy five about BTC or BTC XT is slowly killing the movement.

This is the specific hook, but there's a general phobia of inflation and 'debasement' in libertarian circles and right-wing economics in general, and bitcoin sprung from those cultures. The idea that your money is made-up bullshit dependent on other people/the government for its worth is terrifying to a certain cast of mind, so it needs to be backed by something solid like gold or 'maths'. That the gold standard is much more unstable than fiat currency and that bitcoins are prone to straight-up vanishing is immaterial when principle is at stake. Note how creating new bitcoins is called 'mining' ala gold rather than 'printing'.

Amusingly, this was Glenn Beck's schtick for a while; talk about the pending collapse of the American economy (mainly due to misuderstanding the difference between running a country and a checking account), and then advertising gold in various different forms; from the thinly plated treasury proofs right through to tiny amounts of bullion. At least two of the advertisers were later found to have been ripping people off because watching Glenn Beck means you also know nothing about precious metal spot pricing. There's a huge number of semi-legitimate scams running at any particular kind in the US because there is little to no consumer protection of the kind found in Europe.
