Is there anything around that'll allow me to permanently expose a folder on my phone as a (login-protected) network share over local wifi? Not rooted, and preferably not something that'll chew my battery, obviously.

Eh, but it's maintained. Gives you a basic AOSP7.1 and installing gapps is easy enough.

Kang has a lineage port for pi too, although it's less vetted.

Any suggestions?

Don't know if it's applicable, but for other things I use an app called Tell Me The Time that lets you set an interval and it'll ding and state the current time out loud every <interval>. It might not be useful to you, though, because it uses base times to count from - if you do every 5 minutes and start at 9:23 it'll announce at 9:25, 9:30, etc.

If I want to easily keep a 60 gig or so music library on computer and phone, is Google Play Music the only real option I have to do so easily and automatically without paying for expanded space on something like Dropbox?

To be clear, I'm talking about the sync part, sorry. The storage on-phone is plenty big.

I'll look at Resilio Sync.

MikeJF

Yeah. I have a master music collection on my computer in MusicBee, I just want to be able to sync it to my phone, plugging in my phone is slow and unreliable and really annoying, and it seems like this should be an easy task. And it would be nice if it was two-way enough for me to update ratings in their ID3.

GPM has a really annoying browser and I'd just prefer to use shuttle.

No being able to play my music through your embedded app music player is not a valid substitute, pCloud, give me actual offline files in the file system.

Jeez, trying to find a simple app for something that the phone should do built in but doesn't on android is a nightmare of wading through 'recommendation' pages for adware-filled-data-harvesting microtransaction-blocked-basic-features crap.

Anyone got a recommendation for a simple recorder/uploader? Google's one is pixel-only and this person doesn't have that.

If Android apps do well on it you'll probably find better under that category. If it doesn't have internal app casting then just casting the whole screen should do you fine, right? Microsoft Whiteboard's Android app, maybe? (E: oh there's a webapp for it too, that should do you fine)

Well Swype's owned by Microsoft as of a few months ago thanks to them buying Nuance, maybe they'll create Microsoft Keyboard sometime. Their Android launcher's pro-tier great, after all.

Wait, MS already had SwiftKey, didn't they. Well, maybe they'll merge them. What happened to SwiftKey?

MikeJF

Yeah, I know, I was just saying, Microsoft bought the company that owned Swype earlier this year so maybe they'll dig it out of the old repos. Probably not though, way too hard to merge technologies like that

Does anyone know of a reminder notification app that puts tasks into your notifications on a schedule like the usual, but you can't accidentally swipe away the notification, you have to hit the done button, and if your phone reboots, uncompleted reminders restore.

I've genuinely missed taking pills a few times by the notifications vanishing.

Honestly, for an older person with their first smartphone I might think about iOS; it forces you to do things its own way more than Android, but on the other hand it can be less confusing for a beginner for the same reason.

Although that opinion was formed a while ago, I don't know if it's kept that lately.

I use Microsoft Launcher. I have way too many apps and the alphabet scrollbar app list mode is too handy and for some reason nothing else has it done well. And even that aside it's surprisingly good considering.
