i threw away a laserjet 4+ once. the drawer was hosed. it was probably perfectly fixable. it still remembered its name from the early 90s

my experience with linux printing: cs prof sends us a pdf on the intranet, says to open it with ghostview since the uni only has linux machines, at least in the cs building. so i do and choose to print the pdf, making extra sure to tell it to only print 1 copy of pages from 1 to 1. printer proceeds to poo poo out a bunch of blank pages until it runs out of paper. i can't stop it because the paper tray is locked and the printer interface requires a password. school later tells me i owe them like 20 bucks for the paper, which i never paid that's my story

the printer gets a ghost inside it and dies about 25% of the time i send a print. i listen for the printer making printer sounds and if it doesn't, i press sudo service cups restart

because it can be setup incorrectly but it has some policy against ever giving an error ever so you go through the entire print process and just get an 'ok!' and you will just keep getting "OK! IT PRNTED" even if your printer isn't plugged in like i get that OK is an ok response when you shove poo poo into a queue, but then when i check back the queue is empty and there are no messages

gnome has a little banner thing when you put things into the print queue and it even works good with my printer so it says "started print job" and "job finished" like a scv when its done. but, sometimes, thge printer goes into the phantom zone where everything gets put into an infinite log jam of papers when when u sudo service cups restart they all pour out

i had a printer problem at work because i was adding the printer ip manually and it was locating it just fine *I THINK BUT WHO KNOWS ITS A PRINTER*, but it wouldn't work until i added a line that adds our internal printeral discovery service or whatever it is. seems like dns for printers. like, it could connect to the printer manually, but it still failed silently until i changed the cups configuration so that it could 'discover' the printer. then i had to find our printer in a list of 500 printers and click on it. like, the IP address for the printer is pritned on the side of the printer so just typing in the IP is by far the easiest way for me to configure it, but nope, gotta edit cups.conf for no reason or maybe there is a reason but i'll never know because cups doesn't believe in error message or something. just say 'hey, printers suck and havent been innovated for like, 30 years. you know how printers are never working? yeah? everyone hates printers. to fix printers, we need to start over from scratch. printer suck because printers are still using 80s protocols and we cant update. that's why we need a fresh faced new player to really come along and innovate. that's where you come in, kickstarter'
