Oh, in a similar vein, I found DancingBacons on YouTube, a Japanese guy who also films GoPro style, trying various vending machines and restaurants around Asia. He’s silent, so it’s just ambient noise and subtitles about the food or ordering process. It’s super relaxing to watch, and kind of helpful if you’re planning a trip to Japan.

My kids love Dancingbacons, especially anything involving a vending machine.

Unrelated, here's Matty with Brad Leone-tier food safety protocols. These wings look great though.

The worst part about DancingBacons is the reaction portion of the Street Food videos of his partner making her "ooo, so good" faces around Taiwan.
(not because of her, but b/c of how forced her reactions seem)

I just found a TikTok channel that is just a Japanese highschool (basing off of the uniform pants and the timber of voices in the background) boy opening up the bento packed by his mom filmed go-pro style. No commentary or anything, just him opening it and the occasion "oooh" or subdued "sugoi" in the background. 10/10, very wholesome.

I've been binging a lot of Japanese travel and food YT channels the past couple of years, and I appreciate the silent approach most of them take. It's really relaxing and a great way to decompress before going to bed.

On a related note, I am now obsessed with tiny Japanese campers and converted camper vans and want to import/build one lol.

Pretty sure DancingBacon is Singaporean. And yeah the reaction shots are easily the worst part of it.

What's interesting is that Japanese TV has a reputation for the exact opposite. Every food is loudly "oishii!!!!!" and "sugoi!!!!".

MOM is surely nearby.
I don't think it's been mentioned in this thread before, but I have to absolutely give a hard recommendation to mythical kitchen's Last Meals series (via youtube)

A lot of their other content is clickbait buffoonery but these are legit interviews with famous people where they cook a requested last meal and the questions are no holds barred

They just did Tom Hanks, which is a level of celebrity I didn't think they were capable of pulling, but it's really good, y'all

The Maria Bamford episode is one of the best food interviews I have seen, in no small part because Josh is clearly absolutely starstruck, and also because I love her.

there are trigger warnings in front of that video but lol good lord the reveal that his dad died when he was 19 during routine surgery and his mom ran away from the family due to severe mental illness and they got notice 10 years later she'd killed herself. if you come out of that as merely "stoner powerlifter food guy who does clickbaity youtubes" you did pretty well

Josh is super passionate about food. In this one it just looks like he's introducing some guys to the regional fusion stuff but if you see how dark it's getting they must have been talking for like 5 hours.

There's a catering company in Chicago that used to have booths at festivals a lot, they had bulgogi tacos that are still one of my favorite meals of all time, but I don't think they make them anymore.

Goodness no, now that wouldn't do at all!
You know what, I still like Kenji and I like his cooking videos. The constant POV gives a really great idea of how long the different steps take, the process of mise, hand and tool washing, and gives me an idea of the speed to strive for as a home cook. I don’t get bothered by chewing sounds but lol I can understand why some people would want to turn off his videos at the end when he tastes the food. Also I don’t think he’s particularly aggro in his videos. He’s very in favor of people just using what they want and is self-aware of things like using fish sauce a lot. The most political he’s gotten in his videos is being pro covid safety and acknowledging trans and NB people.

Kenji is good and the backlash against him seems weird.

flashy_mcflash
Feb 7, 2011

I think the 'backlash' against Kenji is pretty overblown. Even in this thread there's about one person annually who gets mad about him and everyone else is like 'he's fine'.

I just watched his weeknight chili video actually and even though it's pretty basic, he always manages to sneak something cool and nerdy in there, like the angle you should use when slicing an onion to maximize uniformity. He's not a dick about it, but it's like a fun thing to know.

I’m not a huge fan of his social media presence but like his videos and will check if he has a recipe for a dish. I do like to cross reference recipes, though, since his can get really involved to chase a minor improvement.

I watch a bunch of food YouTube, but the majority of stuff I attempt to make comes from Kenji's videos (second place is Carla). He makes good, approachable food and explains the techniques well.

Dude just needs to log off and stop correcting the internet, which I think is the source of most of the hate.

He has been pretty active in his videos' comments and/or Twitter in the past, sometimes getting fairly strident in the process. I haven't seen it in a while because I dropped Twitter and stopped reading comments, so if he's gotten better about that, good for him.

My point was he makes good videos that I can turn into good meals and I like that.
