I don't know about the NYT line in particular, but Faludi's been on the line of "liberals are invoking feminism to shore up the legitimacy of the ruling class while abandoning labour for a long time. The NYT article seems to be following a similar line: liberalism/the Democratic Party have engaged and used feminism as a sort of cultural accoutrement instead of political mass movement, and this has ceded the actual political ground to the organized and mobilized wingnuts.

I mean she's writing in the Times so I'm sure she has some kind of brain worms but she seems to know which way is up.
