About the new Mass Effect I could have swallowed it better if it wasn't so bland. I'm not talking about the walking 20+ mins through a desert to get to the next quest marker either. -Riot on the deck = four people yelling. You authorise a security crackdown in which you are easily able to talk the people down anyway. -Make the planets more habitable? Well most of that is done by activating ancient alien devices and doing side quests you'd think wouldn't effect that. The amount of actually doing things to impact the planet through your own efforts is pretty small. If your major hook is to build up colony worlds let me feel like that's what I'm doing not interacting with the 'mysterious alien devices' and letting them do all the work. -Ohhh spooky aliens minor spoiler They're capturing and genetically altering people to look like them. Haven't seen that before I could go on and on. Their premise should have been a real game changer and a chance to do something new a fresh with the series. As it stands there's zero reason for it to be in another galaxy. Heck I'm someone that thought DA2 was tolerable at least it felt like it was doing something different even poorly. Full disclosure: Played until I got all the worlds up to 100% and did most of the crew personal quests. I'd guess I was 2/3rds through it when I gave up. The combat was crap and the universe was so poorly done.

Anyone got any tips on how to beeline toward the highlights of the game so I'll know if it's worth sticking to it even if it doesn't grab me right away?

Warbird posted:Has anyone given My Time at Portia a try? I looks like it has some character and building up/improving a town is my jam. Also apparently the character has a fighting game style attack combo involving a dive kick instead of “punch object”. Them’s major points in my book. Right now you get jobs from the job board in town with time restrictions for some items and 'whenever' for items that advance the plot. The town is way larger than something like Stardew filled with quirky characters. The mining side of it feels really raw you have a jetpack but you spend most of your time just hitting dirt while scanning for artifacts so it's not as fun as you think it should be combing mining and jetpacking. It falls apart about 25 hours in when you open up the combat mines. It's a few rooms sewn together filled with enemies whose AI would bug out often for me. You have I think five levels per stage and beating a boss of each stage unlocks a harder set of levels. I'd say it's going to be a good buy when it's finished and a solid buy now if all you're looking for is 20ish hours of dicking around building/collecting things.

QuarkJets posted:How do people in this thread feel about Northgard? Early game you are mostly worried about food and wood and as you claim more territory (by clearing out any enemies and then paying food to buy it) you start having to worry about gold, fame, lore, stone and iron. What you can build in any piece of territory is very limited so if you say find wheat you need to build farm + silo to get the most out of it leaving you only 1 or 2 slots left for whatever else you happen to need. Stone and Iron are surprisingly rare considering they are needed to upgrade your buildings so you really have to pick what +15% bonuses you want. Unless you're really lucky with map placement you'll have to trade for most of your stone. There's no real production chain. Aside from the silo bonus buildings really don't need anything else besides workers to function. Factions are different enough to be worth exploring. They all have their own gimmick that makes them play slightly differently. I haven't played multiplayer I hear there's some balance issues that need to be patched. Certainly single player some clans are just easier than others. I'd say wait for a sale as it's not going to blow you away or anything. It's just a fun little builder. Side note: One thing I really appreciate about it is that any idle worker will automatically gather food. So a new clan member showing up doesn't have to be babysat as they'll go ahead and take care of their own dinner until you can figure out what to specialise them in. Seems to be fixed now though so he should give it another try if that was his problem as well. Maybe try switching modes if he's still having problems.

Valve sets up a system where only bored workers play a game for five mins every other week and with no feedback decide to put it on the store or not. Valve then sets up an easily manipulated system and doesn't bother to do basic work to keep it on track. Valve then just says gently caress it and lets anyone do anything. At least one goon: What else is valve supposed to do? They're in a no win situation! I'm not a billionaire or anything but I'd suggest hiring people whose sole job is to curate games and slowly work out a usable system of guidelines and feedback for indie devs to review. No doubt it'll have its own problems but kinks could actually be worked out instead of 'tried the minimum and we're all out of ideas!' vibe Steam has. It's so weird to me that in the early days I viewed Steam as the saviour of PC games and now I view them as a company I tolerate because I can't put my games list anywhere else now. Their UI and store system should be lightyears ahead now instead they just fart out random hardware crap once and awhile and make the store so unusable I don't even visit it. I get all my game discovery from threads and articles now.

A hilarious example is DIII during the horrible early years when people were going into a cellar over and over to kill a lone zombie for XP, going around smashing vases and ignoring enemies, etc. Only in that game for awhile it was pretty much the only way to gear up for the hardest levels. So the devs would nerf those methods and wonder why everyone was pissed off all the time.

One plot I remember is marrying the skeleton princess and you could choose to make her alive again (pissing off the religious faction which you probably only married her to please) or you could eventually turn her into a golden skeleton which would at first piss them off but then they'd come around and tell you her beauty was clearly the mark of divine inspiration or something. It was a bit of a wild game. Shame on how much the RTS part of it sucked.

I'd say it's gone from Egosoft: broken as hell stage to Egosoft: janky as hell stage still a bit longer until it reaches the Egosoft: held together with spit and twine final form. Such an annoying thing. I was kinda happy when it first started as I didn't understand the daily max point thing thinking I'd get a few $5.00 coupons out of it which is a big improvement over the stupid card badges previously. Now I'm at 12.5k and don't really plan on buying anything more so I'm guessing I won't even get one unless they add more freebie goal points. It's amazing they made something so half assed yet so overcomplicated and somehow even less rewarding in the end (unless you win some free games I guess).
