Dann's cruelty on that date I don't see as being actual events in universe, but kind of a comedic abstraction of how bad the date went. Like Talla snapping on the glove this episode, I find it unlikely they cavity searched the Krill ambassadors with no consequences, it's a little absurdity thrown in the mix.

Ehhhhhhhh... no, I don't think I subscribe to that. Dann being a jerk on that date does not strike me as inconsistent with the rest of his character as portrayed. I find it eminently believable that Dann would be cheery much of the time but incredibly insecure.

The fact that they never used it in OR (or other, much rarer moments) was a cool choice and I like the juxtaposition

A little EQ, a touch of reverb, slap on some compression and there. That'll get your dickbutt jiggling.
One thing I like about Bortis is he kind of has the stoic warrior thing going on. You can see how his personality would arise. But while overall reserved the Moclins have a pretty wide range of personalities, kind of like how people are. Instead of having entire races all act the same. (Though the Klingons do rule and I don't want them to change)

Stuffy, really reserved, justifying all their bullshit for survival, yea that works.

And Klingons do have a variety. You have ones that are super serious about everything, you have sneaky, untruthsworthy ones, shelfish ones, inquistive ones, and ones who just wanna enjoy life. I've said it before, Klingons were the most developed sci-fi race ever.

IMHO the actor is decent but the character is one-dimensional. It's like Background Ensign Number Three was somehow promoted to a lead spot.

I kinda feel the same way about Yaphet. I freekin' love Norm McDonald, but a horny goo monster just isn't the best vehicle for him. Have Yaphet be sucked into the replicator and made into custard, then have Lt. j.g. McDonald come on board to repair it, and be asked to stay.

Or maybe the other snotmonsters from Snotmonsternor Prime could find out that something Yaphet did was strictly forbidden for their society, and to punish him, they absorb him and spit him back out as a humanoid alien with smoothed features who can no longer shapeshift. I mean, who can no longer do the things that a sentient, ambulatory snotmonster can do.

And yes, I have an idea on how he could gain his snotmonster powers back. But that's for a later episode.

This would be a really great gag. A species that emits a noise that just so happens to sound a lot like a 20th century laugh track when they're amused by something. Of course, they also make an audience "awwwww" sound when they feel heartwarmed.

Oooooooh, now I want an episode where Yaphet goes into his species' reproductive cycle and it's done by uncontrolled cell division. Lots of tiny Yaphets everywhere, a nice hommage to "The trouble with Tribbles".

I don't get why Bortus and Klyden are a couple. Bortus seems way more open-minded than Klyden, who is - compared to Bortus anyway - basically a bigot every time something you can be a bigot about comes up.

I know I couldn't be together with someone who is as close-minded as Klyden and it doesn't make sense that Bortus could be.

I think that's just how he appears to us but he isn't close minded, he's just a Moclan. There probably was a time when he and Bortus saw eye to eye but it's Bortus who is getting 'woke' to the way other species do their thing and interested in letting that seep into his own culture.

I think what happened to his daughter opened Bortus' mind in a big big way, and the entire rest of the crew supports that kind of thinking. I'm not sure how often Klyden even leaves the room

Klyden also being born female probably underlines a lot of his behavior, like since it was done to him he may have come to internalize the abuse and double down as a way of coping.

And this I don't understand at all. Yaphet is great basically every time he's on screen. I wish they'd use him in more major roles, honestly. And I hope the doctor gives him a chance eventually.

Dann's date:

He read a story or poem or something (maybe she read it?) She said it was good in a fake voice. Dann said to give him feedback be critical he can take it. He wanted honest feedback to better himself. She made some mild remark to which he replied that she was tearing his heart out.

It implies he wanted her to keep up the lie because he thought he was hot poo poo. He can't stand being anything other than perfect and hate people pointing out his flaws. This is completely different from everything else we've seen of them though. Maybe his species expects mates that just complement them and stroke their ego the entire time. Maybe it was shot before nailing down his character and it will never matter and always be "that weird out of character date that he had"

See, I didn't think that was out of character at all, I put that down to being ridiculously insecure and shallow. He wanted to be the kind of loose, easygoing person that he's seen on TV, and he knows that he's supposed to say "Go ahead, I can take it, I need honest feedback." But the slightest bit of criticism really did send him into a shame spiral and doubt everything he's ever done. I didn't get the sense he thought he was perfect or that he really wanted her to keep lying, just that he's so insecure that he just couldn't handle hearing her real opinion.

I don't know. I think that date seemed perfectly in character with everything we had seen of him so far. The character is remarkably overconfident and unprofessional.
