At this point I'm more bewildered that they ever got this far without the site imploding, if this is the kind of PR we're dealing with.

Feels like they're quoting right from a Michaud press release. Tamara's account had one extremely close to Malcom's in wording but it was deleted.

Sad to hear assholes are apparently hounding them as well. They don't deserve it as they're locked into contracts.

I think it's important to remember how many people just watch NC on their YouTube feed and are done with it until next week. They're not reading comments or looking at Twitter and being exposed to all this.

Doug himself would have to do some hosed up poo poo ON the show to really hit rock bottom.

I like that the whole premise of the commercial is that his impressions suck.

I don't think unsubscribing is some kind of unreasonable response.

I feel like the whole mess has gone past the point where "drama" is a good description of it. Like, "drama" is one producer slept with another producer's spouse or something. This is years of abuse and exploitation of labor, peppered with misogyny.

In Brad's case, there's a difference giving a friend the benefit of the doubt and being a coward. At some point being a good friend means calling them out on their poo poo.

It’s real frustrating that we showed that people into gaming could organize, and we could get some real change in the way too chummy relationship some game sites have with publishers, but instead that power was used to show that nerds are actually terrible, terrible people.

Are there any journalism outlets funded solely via patreon or something. I don’t mean people like hbomberguy, a person or small group that put out a video essay every so often, but a site with a staff and regular coverage of industry news?

Weapon durability I can take or leave, but the old bad thing in FE is permadeath. While I’m glad there’s an option to turn it off, it’s a very lazily implemented mechanic that’s been practically untouched since the beginning. For 90% of players it just adds an extra failure trigger to levels (“Don’t let anybody die unless it’s some new person that you have no intention of using”) and there’s so much more you could do with it. Lose a character another character had a high support with? Well that character goes into a berserker rage when fighting whatever killed them. Or maybe they get a general buff but take more damage from whatever weapon killed their friend/spouse.

The kind of poo poo that creates a more memorable, unique experience than “Oh Bob died in my game because I already had a good archer and I didn’t feel like starting the level over.”

The support system in Fates was some real square peg/round hole poo poo. I get that it’s a big part of why the series came back from the brink, but geez was that some slapped on poo poo.

Even worse is that the game had only two queer pairings, which were exclusive to different versions so I hope you like the version with the pairing that you want. And you also don’t produce a child from it, which...playing the realism card is pretty loving bold when the game has a Plane of Accelerated Aging so you can send your son or daughter into war.

Ehhhh I'm not really buying that since the bulk of Yelling Internet Man videos were aimed specifically at low-hanging fruit like blockbuster bombs or cheaply made video game adaptations. Rolfe did it because he had a love for making films and video games, but for a lot of other people it was just real easy to produce a video where feign outrage that Bad Thing is Bad.

I guess the difference is that these types of videos were rarely critiques in the same way as you'd expect from a game or film critic.

Once publishers see the way the wind is blowing (and many already have), I suspect a lot of YouTube channels will be just as compromised as any corporate gaming site. Maybe even worse since a publisher will probably be better equipped to outmaneuver negotiations with a single person/small team than another corporate entity.

I'd say loot crates like that aren't the same thing. You're getting physical objects that are equal in value to the money spent, they're priced to entice a single one-off purchase instead of a constant stream of small ones and the expectation is "What will you get from this small range? It's a surprise..." rather than "KEEP ROLLING FOR THE RARE ONES!! KEEP. ROLLING. FOREVER!!"
There are absolutely ones that have a SUPER RARE GOLDEN FIGURE and similar poo poo to keep you buying. They are loving everywhere and in every flavor, from Rick & Mort keychains to Pony plushes. I have no idea if toy makers looked at video games and thought “that’s not a bad idea...” but predatory ones exist and I’m sure even without rarity people may drop 50 bucks to get their Favorite. It’s bad, even more so being targeted at a younger demographic.

Yeah, the episode was definitely more about “stereotyping and gender tribalism makes no sense” as opposed to anything remotely about gender fluidity, but that whole episode is a follow-up to 90s shows and how they were supposedly pushing an lgbt agenda (spoiler: they weren’t). From that perspective you can see why he included it, even if he read something that the writers VERY LIKELY did not intend.
