The initial attempts at this were not particularly useful for combat, but on the plus side were very delicious.

Even worse! Regular murderers, you can just pay up, whereupon the clanmember is potentially in debt to the ring for a significant-to-ludicrous number of cow-units. Secret murderers, you kick them out to their inevitable doom.

(I'm pretty sure this applies to Riders like it does Orlanthi, but I could be misremembering!)

The prohibition on secret murder as especially worse than normal murder is one of Heort's laws I believe. Heort isn't even born yet and is also a Ram.

Bit of a broader question, but in KoDP I thought you needed horses to recruit thanes. Are Orlanthi thanes cavalry or mounted infantry? What about our warriors and/or Fyrd equivalent? I also am not sure, but the only bronze-age cavalry I can think of are the Scythians and Assyrians, and iirc they were mostly mounted archers and even then they were really close to, if not in, the iron age. But also, I can't think of any reason why the same has to hold true here. So, what's combat look like for Riders?

Riders are horse archers who use skirmishing tactics before the close, Orlanthi thanes don't fight on horseback except for elmali specialists in later ages, they just use them for redeployment. Also at the moment they have no idea how to use horses and it's hilarious.

I don't want to discuss how Rams fight in this game because it's kinda cool and I want to wait for the game to get there, but Orlanthi in KoDP times fight mostly on foot with spears. Most adult men were expected to participate in raids, and some clans had a tradition of women participating as well. Weaponthanes were professional soldiers who fought on horseback and had high quality weapons and armor. Even a wealthy third age Orlanthi clan would often have fewer than a hundred horses.

As Riders, we similarly have most of our men fight, along with any women who want to fight (the ones who don't want to fight participate in raids as auxiliaries). Every single person rides into battle on horseback and fights from horseback. A clan that can't field its entire adult population on the battlefield due to lack of horses is poor indeed. Most of the population uses bows or spears because they're cheap, so these non-professional soldiers are nicknamed Bows. Professional soldiers wear expensive bronze armor and wield expensive bronze swords and are nicknamed Swords.

Based on the art, most of the army is horseback archers. I'm not an expert on ancient warfare, but I believe that on open level terrain horseback archers are basically cheating. On the other hand, magic spells are also basically cheating and everyone has those.

In the eleventh year of her chieftainship, Endarei led the entire Blazing Goats clan south over the mountains. Many said this would be our last migration, with the ice growing to the north and barbarians to the south.

We settled near the untamed Black Eel River, finding new pastures among new clans that had moved to the valley earlier. Some were friendly, others less so.

It was time to rebuild our relations to our gods and neighbors, before we ran out of the food, wealth, and magic we had stockpiled for the migration. We also needed to finish preparing our farmland and homes.

We are known for being the last clan to arrive in the valley.

"Often it's better to concentrate all our magic in a few areas. Of course, all areas are useful."
"We should plan to build a shrine to the Earth Mother later this year."
"We can't produce enough food without help from the gods. Allocate magic to Fields, since they produce the bulk of our food."
"We have more magic than usual, since we prepared for the migration with the rites of our ancestors. We won't have as much next year."
"We need to restore our knowledge of the gods after migrating. Allocate magic to Ritual so we can then sacrifice for Mysteries."
"Pastures magic will help all our livestock, including the cattle and goats that feed us.
"We have not had a chance to finish clearing land, so we should use Fields rituals to make sure we clear enough barley."

The game begins! I'm not going to be holding a vote on Sacred Time magic allocation - most years, I'll ask for goon opinions on top priorities (which I will then abstract into sensible magic choices), but this first year is going to be very, very busy. Also, in basically any year, unless you're really short on magic there is no reason not to max out Fields, Pastures, and (unless you have an urgent other need) Crafts. This first year I'm also tossing one point into Diplomacy and one point into Rituals, and hoarding the rest - we're not going to be doing any exploring outside clan lands, we're not going to be doing dedicated raiding, and we're not venturing into the Godplane.

Our initial clan ring advice is extraordinarily boring at the moment, but that's common in Sacred Time. I'm sharing it anyway.

No votes just yet, but there's about to be one on Ventures, narrowed down to the three urgent options.

Keen eyes will notice that we have someone important and exciting, not just in our clan, but on our starting ring. This is a good omen for the future.

When you see X Bows and Y Swords, that's X citizens with weapons and Y professional fighters.

Notably, the Sword is a new weapon, and associated with the Air rune - the rebellious storm king used the first and most powerful sword, Death, to kill Yelm.

Ventures are a once-yearly (at the start of the game), particularly powerful enterprise. They represent devoting a substantial portion of your clan's surplus resources and effort to a single goal. They take a timestep, but if you don't use that timestep at some point in the year, you're making a mistake.

Many ventures are available regardless of what is going on with your clan, but there are three ventures that start available to your clan, will remain an option until you complete them, and are absolutely critical to your long-term survival. Please vote on which one we're starting this year with.

Clear Pastures: Create new pastures by clearing wildland.
Expand Fields: Prepare new fields to be sown.
Finish Houses: Properly seal and decorate houses.

The first two will bring your crop and herd production to normal levels from their current suboptimal levels. Finishing houses will improve clan mood and enable the completion of the Clan Hall, which when finished (after a few more venture-steps) will allow two ventures per year rather than one.

We also need to pick a leader for the venture, but as a general rule, the one the game recommends is almost certainly the best choice. The game and I will handle that step.

"Until we have more warriors, we won't be able to engage in the more military ventures."
"There don't seem to be many bandits right now. We don't need to rally the clan to drive them out."
"It is still early in the year. We could wait before deciding on a venture." Sometimes useful, but we're not doing that.
"Emphasize archery, I always say."
"Our fields are too small."
"Our pastures are too small."
"I would be happy to lead the entire clan in preparing more fields."

This is not like KODP, food is EXTREMELY limited in this game and starving is way too easy.
