Oh serious question about Huckabee: Who's going to hire her after this? I just checked up on Spicer out of curiosity and he's mostly a professional punchline now accepting appearance money.

Fox News, and she'll probably put a book out through Regnery that'll get mass-purchased by the usual suspects to push it onto the NYT bestseller list for a while.

I'm next to Wright Patt, they gave an all-clear but it's still not clear what happened or what the resolution was. The incident happened about 5 minutes after they put out a text alert that there was an active-shooter training going on, then they sent out another saying there was an actual incident and it's not a drill. Hoping everyone is alright and it was just some dumb panic and a lot of clearing to make sure nothing happened.

A similar scenario happened at a base I was at a couple years back - an exercise turned into a real-world response after someone saw an actor with a fake gun, thought it was real, etc. etc. I didn't want to post about it because of course the worst-case scenario is that it is in fact an actual incident, but I really hope it's the same thing. The one I'm thinking about was also at a hospital - hospitals are in the forefront of SF's mind because of Ft. Hood, but they also tend to have a lot of old retirees that have no idea about base exercises.

I'm on some kind of hellish mailing list where the Pentagon Force Protection Agency sends me notices about every goddamn post in NCR doing things. Oh the phone lines at the Pentagon are down from 12am-2am tomorrow. Oh there's an active shooter drill at Meade. Oh there's a fire drill at WRNMMC. I seem to be the only one for my office that is subscribed to everything and I'm convinced that whoever the exchange guy is happened to remember me from 15 years ago to gently caress with me.

It's kind of a semi-big deal for the region because the Druze are spread over Israel/Syria/Lebanon (mostly) and loving with them is ill advised. They largely want to be left alone, so rocking the boat is probably not the best idea.

When I was at DLI we had a planned active shooter drill transition to an actual bomb threat response about midway through one of my unit tests so that was a fun day.

Even then, there's a half million people here, cutting off street lights is probably low on the list of things since there was a budget surplus in the city last year. Cop was shot around 3am and they still had a sizable swath of town locked off from traffic at lunch, probably still. He was responding to a shots fired randomly in the streets call, apparently. He was still in critical condition when I saw the news blurb on lunch.

Even then, there's a half million people here, cutting off street lights is probably low on the list of things since there was a budget surplus in the city last year. It was that town. https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/06/30/colorado-springs-libertarian-experiment-america-215313 quote:To fill a $28 million budget hole, Colorado Springs’ political leaders—who until that point might have been described by most voters as fiscal conservatives—proposed tripling property taxes. Nearly two-thirds of voters said no. In response, city officials (some would say almost petulantly) turned off one out of every three street lights. That’s when people started paying attention to a city that seemed to be conducting a real-time experiment in fiscal self-starvation. But that was just the prelude. The city wasn’t content simply to reject a tax increase. Voters wanted something genuinely different, so a little more than a year later, they elected a real estate entrepreneur as mayor who promised a radical break from politics as usual. quote:Take the streetlights. Turning them off had saved the city about $1.25 million. What had not made the national news stories was what had happened while those lights were off. Copper thieves, emboldened by the opportunity to work without fear of electrocution, had worked overtime scavenging wire. Some, the City Council learned, had even dressed up as utility workers and pried open the boxes at the base of streetlights in broad daylight. Keeping the lights off might have saved some money in the short term, but the cost to fix what had been stolen ran to some $5 million.

I love that story. The only interaction I've had with the people of Colorado Springs is being stuck in a traffic jam driving through, because someone had somehow flipped their sedan over several times on the northbound lanes, and three more accidents were caused on the southbound lanes from people rubbernecking the aftermath.
