Sorry if this has been asked before, but how the hell do the masks work for hiding your identity? I robbed a train in the middle of nowhere with a new set of clothes, guns I rarely use equipped, and a full executioner mask on and yet they pegged me for Arthur immediately. Is there something I am missing?

Did you put the mask on on the train? Or did you interact with the people you we're robbing without a mask before robbing the train? Because both of those will do it

Put the outfit and mask on a ways away from the train, then rode up and started knifing people.

It would be nice if there was some sort of indication for how identifiable you are because as it stands doing non-story outlaw stuff is almost never worth the effort.

Also, I'm loving terrible at hand to hand combat and I can't figure out why. Is it just poorly designed or am I really bad at the game?

It's a little clunky so don't feel bad. Basically the core loop is punch - if connects, combo, if not then block until they hit you then pummel them - block. If they are just regular dudes then just pummeling works but for big dudes you have to dodge hits with block.

Also if you are fistfighting for non lethal reasons you can automatically hogtie someone if you punch them with your rope equipped

Try using lower caliber weapons, it helps with not instakilling them when you shoot them in the toe. Granted, it's hard to see when you are in the middle of a firefight.

Or just run around with a bow and shoot deer, chase them down as they bleed out, you monster

I have tried to be a good guy and it sucks. One time I saved a stagecoach from being robbed by bandits, and tied them up rather than shooting them. On a whim i threw one on the back of my horse and decided to take him to jail for his crimes. Three mins later I am riding through town and get gunned down for kidnapping the dude.

The gang economics are bullshit. We just robbed a homestead for $1200. The 'gang' gets 600. Two days later, Dutch is haranguing me for not contributing enough. The entire ledger is me giving up pocket watches and jewelry, with Javier contributing a pelt for 25 cents.

Gonna find a Gutenberg press and distribute pamphlets about socialism to the rest of the gang.

Also if you spend a week away from camp, Dutch sends Charles to find you and bring you back. I hope Arthur stabs Dutch in the heart at some point, because he represents capitalism, to me.

Of course he has to whine that you are not bringing in enough, you are the only one that brings in anything and all those vests and cigars aren't going to buy themselves. God forbid anyone actually uses the things they steal, surely sleeping in a stolen covered wagon is better than under a tarp on the ground.

I do love how you are obligated to drop hundreds of dollars to spruce up Dutch's tent so that you can get the next tier that unlocks fast travel, with the added bonus of gently caress-all bonus income. Wait, no, I hate that.

So is the mask just 100% effective at avoiding bounties? Could I just put it on and go on a killing spree in town, or is there some limit to its powers?

I wore it to rob a train at one point and was pretty sure I still got a bounty afterwards, but I may have already had one.

The disguise system is pretty hosed. You have to wear all different clothes, use different guns, and wear a mask and it still rarely works. The only good way to avoid a bounty is getting rid of any possible witnesses. This makes robbing stores financial or literal suicide, unfortunately.

Robbing in general is pretty poo poo. Trains usually carry no more than ten bucks worth of random goods, and passersby only give you a couple bucks if you stand them up. The real money is in the story missions.

I even managed to beat an O’Driscoll Boy to death for giving me guff right on the outskirts of town in broad daylight; I didn’t even bother to chase down the witness I just hopped on my horse and got back to camp. No bounty and I went back into town the next day without a problem.

This makes me wonder if IDing you is instant with cops but random strangers can be put off by clothes swapping or whatever. I am remembering once robbing a train and being anonymous until the fuzz showed up and popped me as Arthur.

As bad as the "BOING BOING TUTORIAL" stuff can be in all rockstar games, I like some of the more organic stuff they slip in. I find a guy begging for medicine on the side of the road, after I help he points me towards the plants that poisoned him, which can be used to make poison arrows and stuff. Remember, you seem to be able to hand yourself in after the mission by just approaching the town and surrendering. It'll lock you in jail for a few days, but you don't lose much money, certainly not anywhere near the actual bounty. Seems to be a much better (cheaper) way of clearing bounties.

Is it less than the bounty? Every time I handed myself over they only "reduced" the amount when I had less on me than the bounty amount. Except in the rare cases when one of your camp mates broke you out

Since gaining honor is such a massive pain in the rear end, a few odd things that gain it that I read about

- killing animals on the first shot
- saying hello to people on the street (every third one is a bump)
- tying enemies up seems to be a crapshoot but sometimes it works

Granted I have done a lot of stuff and it still is floating at zero so you probably just have to grind.

VVV I dont think that is a bump, it just isn't a negative hit. Although it would have been worth it no matter what.
