I think that we only get one chance at life and nearly any kind of being alive is preferable to being dead. Also I was born into a certain level of inescapable discomfort so my tolerance may be biased. We are in general stronger than we think we are.

I remember like twenty years ago, perhaps longer, I read that extracting oil from tar sands and oil shale was so inefficient that if we reached a point when we were actually doing that it probably meant poo poo was hosed and we were doomed.
