If you’re not an Atalanta fan then there was really not much of anything going on that was terribly memorable. Juventus ran away with the league as they have done for nearly a decade, Napoli put up an  , Inter scraped their way in the CL as has become tradition and Atalanta played out of their goddamn skulls to get in to the top four. Milan, Lazio and Roma were supposed to the EL entrants but Milan decided to take their ball and go home due to being broke letting Torino in to the EL qualifying stages.Ronaldo had a good season by all accounts but wasn’t necessarily Juve’s best player. Papu Gomez continued his mid career renaissance as he led his boys to the champions league for the first time with the help of vice-capocannoniere “Big” Duvan Zapata, Krzysztof Piatek came out of nowhere to be one of the league’s top scorers and our FIFA loving friend Ciro Immobile put up some good numbers as well. Fabio Quagliarella, at over 69 years old, had the season of his life and ended up Capocannoniere of the league as well as our hearts. We were finally able to rid ourselves of Chievo “turd that wont flush” Verona only to have their infinitely worse fascist cousins Hellas come roaring back to rival Lazio for the Corpse of Fabrizio Piscitelli worst fans on Earth award. There have been 7 managerial changes in the offseason with notable ones being Maurizio Sarri returning from ashtrayless England to replace Max “Giacomo Bonaventura Sr.” Allegri at Juve and Antonio “Wayne Rooney’s hairpiece” Conte replace WaLuciano Spalletti at Inter. Aside from some of the huge signings Juve have made, Conte at Inter significantly puts their chances of winning something much higher as he is the best manager in football at taking a real crop of absolute poo poo players and getting something out of them. Lets meet our friends  Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio Home City Bergamo Manager: Giampiero Gasperini Notable players in: Luis Muriel (forward, Sevilla), Martin Skrtl (defender, free agent) Notable players out: Gianluca Mancini (fullback, Roma) Trophies: Coppa Italia [1] 62/63 Last finish: 3rd with 69 points naice Look at this poo poo. I knew Big Duvan was wasted at Napoli and he proved it this past year; Gomez just spraying crosses to him and him scoring every single one of them. Gasperini is a genius? Eh, sure, but despite what the press would say Atalanta had a very VERY good side that aren’t really punching above their weight at all. This is their level with the squad they have. Competing in three competitions is going to be tough since their second string isn’t nearly as good as their first but they’ve only lost Mancini (who was quite good to be fair) so they’re really in good shape to do well domestically at least. No idea how they’ll do in Europe.  Bologna Football Club 1909 Home City Bologna Manager: Sinisa Mihajlovic, though maybe not since he announced he has leukaemia Notable players in: Nobody I’ve heard of Notable players out: Erik Pulgar (midfielder, Fiorentina) Trophies: Serie A [7] 24/25, 28/29, 35/36, 36/37, 38/39, 40/41, 63/64 Coppa Italia [2] 69/70, 73/74 Last finish: 10th Pippo Inzaghi was managing this team in to relegation by Christmas and here comes Mihajlovic who got them firing on all cylinders and pulled them up to 10th by the end of the year. The players all said he was the complete reason they saved their season, and now that he’s likely not going to be available it may be tough to replace him. Bologna will target “safety” but their fans will likely want more than that.  Brescia Calcio SpA Home City Brescia Manager: Eugenio Corrini Notable players in: Eh Notable players out: Nah Trophies: None at the top level Last finish: 1st in Serie B Brescia managed to hold off the late charge by Lecce in Serie B to win by one point, marking a return to Serie A. You may remember Corrini from managing Chievo for a while but that would also require you to remember Chievo and I don’t blame you if you don’t. He also managed Palermo but who hasn’t. Brescia’s jewel is Sandro Tonali, who already has Italy senior caps to his name and is wanted by several clubs. They’ve managed to hold on to him for the time being and are trying to bring in hometown hero Mario Balotelli. As for all promoted clubs, they’ll focus on staying up.  Cagliari Calcio Home City Cagliari Manager: Rolando Maran Notable players in: Radja Nainggolan (midfielder, Inter) Notable players out: Luca Pellegrini (fullback, Juventus), Nicolo Barella (midfielder, Inter), Talismano Padoin (good luck charm, end contract) Trophies: Serie A 69/70 Last finish: 15th Cagliari were mostly unremarkable this past year but they did have the emergence of two stars in Barella and Pellegrini, who of course were sold or returned immediately. Nainggolan wasn’t getting anything done at Inter so he has returned to the club that made him a big deal, not only for footballing reasons, but because his wife is ill and she is from Sardegna. What is it with these horrible stories of disease? Why can’t we have nice things in this league!!  Associazione Calcio Firenze Fiorentina Home City Firenze Manager: Vincenzo “lmao” Montella Notable players in: Boa Boa Boa Teng Teng Teng (the man, Barcelona), Pol Lirola (defender, Sassuolo), Erik Pulgar (midfielder, Bologna), Bartolomiej Dragowski (keeper, Empoli, return from loan) Notable players out: Jordan Veretout (midfielder, Roma), Ricky Saponara (midfielder, Genoa) Trophies: Serie A [2] 55/56, 68/69 Coppa Italia [6] 39/40, 60/61, 65/66, 74/75, 95/96, 00/01 Cup Winners Cup [1] 60/61 Last finish: 16th Fiorentina were almost relegated on the last day. They were that bad despite having what one might consider one of the better attacking formations in Italy. You know why? Because Vincenzo Montella was the manager and the owners did not give a flying gently caress. The team was sold to Italian American businessman Rocco Commisso in the offseason and they have been buying up players at a serious clip. Commisso seems dedicated to improving the situation in Florence and if Montella can get his poo poo together they could be challenging for Europe. Juve took Sarri out of Engand and back to Italy where he has been systematically disassembling the squad. On paper the team still looks really good but here are some weird subtractions going on the transfer market. I know we all say this every year but this actually might be the season somebody beats them. Oh hey, and Buffon is back.  Societa Sportiva Lazio Home City Roma Manager: Simone Inzaghi Notable players in: Manuel Lazzari (midfielder, SPAL) Notable players out: Martin Caceres (defender, the bin) Trophies: Serie A [2] 73/74, 99/00 Coppa Italia [5] 1958, 97/98, 99/00, 03/04, 08/09, 12/13, 18/19 Cup Winners Cup [1] 99/98 Last finish: 8th Lazio had a pretty good year on the pitch, winning the Coppa Italia and finishing in the EL spots. Milinkovic-Savic had a wet fart of a season and his underperforming was kinda the reason they went from challenging for the CL to dropping where they finished. Immobile is still good, Inzaghi is a way better manager than his brother and they haven’t lost or gained anyone that important. I imagine they’ll be fighting for Europe again.  Unione Sportiva Lecce SpA Home City Lecce Manager: Fabio Liverani (he made it!) Notable players in: Gianluca Lapadula (striker, Genoa, loan), Diego Farias (striker, Cagliari, loan with option) Notable players out: none Trophies: none at the top level Last finish: 2nd in Serie B Lecce are almost the southernmost team in the league; Cagliari just barely edges them out. A hard fight with Brescia saw them still automatically promoted thanks to both the good management of Fabio Liverani and the play of former Serie A players Tachtsidis and Mancosu. I think Liverani managed Palermo at some point, he definitely played for them, but it was short lived. As far as I know this is his first real stint at the top level, though he has been managing for some time. They’ll be aiming to stay up. I expect to see Fabrizio Miccoli in the stands every game. Despite qualifying for the Europa League, the club negotiated a deal with UEFA that would see them not play in Europe this season in exchange for much lighter FFP sanctions and the wiping of a lot of punishments related to the mismanagement of the club by the nameless barely real Chinese consortium that previously owned them. On the pitch, Milan have had to sell their own large adult son Patrick Cutrone in order to sign some guys I haven’t really seen play, but a pile of dead weight was finally removed from the books. Gattuso was allowed to finish the season but was promptly replaced by Sampdoria’s Marco Giampaolo. Still not entirely sure how I feel about that. Unless Giampaolo is some sort of multilingual man-management genius I can’t see this squad coming together quickly enough to maintain a push for top 4 all season, but that will be the goal.  Societa Sportiva Calcio Napoli Home City Napoli Manager: Carlo Ancelotti Notable players in: Kostas Manolas (defender, Roma) Notable players out: Amadou Diawara (midfielder, Roma) Trophies: Serie A [2] 86/86, 89/90 Coppa Italia [4] 61/62, 75/76, 86/87, 11/12, 13/14 UEFA Cup/Europa Leage [1] 88/89 Last finish: 2nd Ancelotti’s continued tenure at Napoli shows that Big Dee-Lau has some faith in him. After losing Hamsik last year I expected them to fall apart a bit but league wise they maintained their 2nd place. Not much to say here, once Juve started to pull away they relaxed and let the usual bullshit take over but they were comfortably top 3 all year. Another title challenge is possible but the depth doesn’t seem to be there to really sustain 3 competitions.  Parma Calcio 1913 S.r.l. Home City Parma Manager: Roberto D’Aversa Notable players in: meh Notable players out: meh Trophies: Coppa Italia [3] 91/92, 98/99, 01/02 UEFA Cup [2] 94/95, 98/99 Cup Winners Cup 92/93 Last finish: 14th Good lads Parma finished comfortably mid table while showcasing the talents of our good friend Gervinho throughout most of the season. Bruno Alves had a particularly good season not only in defense but through set pieces. I expect them to be midtable again, no big moves in or out. De Rossi was unceremoniously not renewed wich generated a lot of hate from the fans toward the front office. A 6th place finish wasn’t exactly great and Claudio Ranieri was brought in to finish out the season after Di Francesco wasn’t able to get anywhere with what was obviously an expensive squad. Roma’s been making a lot of moves and has replaced a not-insignificant part of their squad along with a new manager so who knows how they perform. I expect they’ll be fighting for Europe but unless all these new players gel they’ll be far from the title.  Unione Calcio Sampdoria Home City Genova Manager: Eusebio Di Francesco Notable players in: Jeison Murillo (defender, Valencia) Notable players out: Dennis Praet (midfielder, Leicester) Trophies: Serie A [1] 90/91 Coppa Italia [4] 84/85, 87/88, 88/89, 93/94 Cup Winners Cup [1] 89/90 Last finish: 9th Marco Giampoalo’s “brilliance” and Fabio Quagliarella’s insane season propelled Samp to exaclty one place higher than the year before, but it was done without signing and huge players and relying on an ancient old man so it’s kind of impressive. Quagliarella is a great player and a good lad but I don’t think he’ll be able to replicate his form across another season, so it remains to be seen if Di Francesco can actually do anything with this squad. They’re solidly mid table and have done some moves in the market, but not with any players Im especially familiar with so they could finish just above relegation or just in Europe, who knows.  Unione Sportivo Sassuolo Calcio Home City Sassuolo Manager: Roberto De Zerbi Notable players in: Ciccio Caputo (striker, Empoli), Pedro Obiang (midfielder, West Ham) Notable players out: Setfano Sensi (midfielder, Inter), Merih Demiral (defender, Juventus) Trophies: None at the top level Last finish: 11th Last season was relatively forgettable for Sassuolo, aside from loaning Boateng to Barcelona. The big clubs have taken their best midfielder and defender, and they’ve only sort’ve been replaced. Berardi is at the level of club talisman now, and De Zerbi will likely play him off the shoulder of Caputo. Barring any insanity I expect another mid table finish.  Società Polisportiva Ars et Labor 2013 Home City Ferrara Manager: Leonardo Semplici Notable players in: Federico Di Francesco (striker, Sassuolo), Etrit Berisha (keeper, Atalanta, loan) Notable players out: Manuel Lazzari (midfielder, Lazio), Kevin Bonifazi (defender, Torino), Mirco Antenucci (striker, Bari) Trophies: None at the top level Last finish: 13th Ferrara’s good lads finished a respectable 13th with Petagna and Antenucci going on decent runs in the scoring charts. Losing Lazzari and Bonifazi is kind of a big deal, though signing Di Francesco is a bit of a coup considering the other teams available to him. Their aim will be to stay up, and they should have no problem, but I don’t expect them anywhere near the top 6. .  Torino Football Club Home City Torino Manager: Walter Mazzarri Notable players in: none Notable players out: Milinkovic-Savic the lesser (keeper, Standard Liege), Adem Ljajic (striker, come to Besiktas), Mbaye Niang (striker, Rennes), Emiliano Moretti (defender, retired) Trophies: Serie A [7] 27/28, 42/43, 45/46, 46/47, 47/48, 48/49, 75/76 Coppa Italia [5] 35/36, 42/43, 67/68, 70/71, 92/93 Last finish: 7th Pretty great season from Torino last year, and with Milan agreeing to forego the Europa League this season, Torino benefitted and has in fact already defeated two teams on the way to a playoff with Wolves, arguably the tie of the turn. Though they haven’t really brought anyone in, Mazzarri seems to have the team working well as is and their pre-season prep has probably made them the most match ready team in the league. Torino were even flirting with the CL last season at one point, but couldn’t keep it up. I expect another European challenge but they will need to make some signings soon.  Udinese Calcio Home City Udine Manager: Igor Tudor Notable players in: Ilija Nestorovski (striker, Palermo, the next Zlatan according to Zamparini a few years ago) Notable players out: some guys Trophies: None at the top level Last finish: 12th As expected Udinese were in a relegation fight for a bit and were lucky not to get sucked in to it worse because Fiorentina and Genoa were incredibly bad in the second half of the season. A respectable 12th doesn’t really show how poorly they played under Davide Nicola. You know what though, Kevin Lasagna is the captain and if that doesn’t inspire confidence nothing will. RAI Italia carries a game in each time slot (lunch time, 1500 and 2045) on each game day, but the quality of the broadcast is really bad and also it’s in Italian! In the UK No clue Anywhere else With Ronald playing for Juve there are a trillion streams available for any game he’s involved in. What should I read? La Gazzetta Dello Sport: Italian sports daily with an English language site that’s been getting better over the years. Most of their news is reliable, if a little later than twitter. Football Italia: A English language site covering Italian football that updates constantly. Good English language coverage; the writers have started to show their allegiances over the years. transfermarkt.it: A gigantic real life transfer database, the .it version is in Italian and covers Serie A on the first page, but if you go to the bottom there's a .co.uk version that's in English. Who should I follow on twitter/facebook The league itself actually has a very good social media presence, and they post all the time. They post a lot of good pictures and announce important things pretty quickly. They have a great youtube presence as well; lots of old matches and weekly highlights/interviews in English as well as Italian. Tancredi Palmeri is a multilingual journalist who is mostly worth following during the transfer season for entertainment only; he’s mostly full of poo poo but every now and then he tells a good story about a player or a manager and such. Gianluca Di Marzio is another good journalist who’s more serious than Palmeri and also has an English section on his website. He’s usually very reliable. OptaPaolo for stat dorks Calciatori Brutti, literally “ugly footballers”, is a pretty funny account that tweets a lot of humorous Italian sports things, usually about football. Every now and then they’re serious too. A good twitter account. Instagram as well. Italian football TV English language guys that have a podcast but also post a lot and generally are funny. Good for media like videos, pictures etc. They have a good insta too. Roma’s English language account is really good even if you’re not a Roma fan. They’re what everyone else’s social media team wants to be. Samp’s English account doesn’t post as much but they are also good. I have ESPN+ which is good regardless and this is the icing on the cake, I had no idea. What’s the funn(i?)est mid-table side to latch on to to give me the hook I need to keep up with things? I’ll plastic Brescia if they get Balo but otherwise I don’t want to latch on to lovable losers who get relegated and force me to track down loving Serie B streams next year. I'd still recommend picking Atalanta.
