Open a much cheaper coffee shop. Skip all the bullshit, no milks, no sugars. Only sell black coffee, it's the best way to have it anyway. The expensive ingredients in coffee special drinks will just drag you down. Another great way to keep costs down would be to be the only worker. Renting out a shop space is a risky move, but if you find room for a bed in the back rooms you can just live there and save on your personal rent.

Shamino posted:I've been unemployed since January and am trying to figure out my next career move. I have a lead on a spot in a lovely part of town for $900/mo and figure it'll cost me about $20,000 all in to get the place open, which is about 90% of the savings I have left. It's near a busy intersection and an office park so there is plenty of vehicle traffic. If I can do even 200 drinks/day (just 25/hr assuming I'm open from 5-2) it'd take care of all my bills and then some. Are you renting a space that can be turned into a coffee shop for basically 0 dollars? You’d be lucky to get millwork and appliances for $20,000, let alone any sort of electrical, plumbing, or hvac work. A basic electrical buildout for a coffee shop is $20k+ by itself. Figure $500 for a dedicated circuit for each appliance with a GFI breaker (more for espresso machine and coffee brewer, as these draw lots of power), $150 per light installed (minimum, includes emergency lighting and exit signs), $500-700 to wire up the water heater, $$$ if you have a lighted sign, etc etc Pivotal Lever fucked around with this message at 04:02 on Dec 12, 2019 |

Just stand on a corner and sell coffee. Come to think of it cut out that last expense and cut out the middleman and just ask people for money instead of trying to sell them anything.

The space is mostly finished, I'm not too sure what it was before but all I'd really need to do is install counter space and a grease trap. I was quoted $4000 to do 100% of the plumbing work and $2500 for electrical. I was a stagehand and set carpenter during high school and briefly during college so I can do 99% of the carpentry myself. Appliances (like under sink fridges, etc) and actual furniture are shockingly cheap second hand.

As a serious reply it sounds cool OP and might work out but you don’t have enough money consider a partner I guess, I don’t know coffee or coffee shops I couldn’t comment on margins Joke reply, open on of those lingerie drive thru coffee places they have in Seattle there are tons of creepy men willing to throw money at lovely coffee to see a mostly naked woman

gently caress it, just do it. You'll probably end up losing all your money and becoming horribly jaded, but you'll learn extremely valuable lessons about yourself and how capricious the public can be. And hey, you might just succeed anyway.

Shamino posted:I could potentially pull the entirety of my 401k or load myself up with a ton of credit card debt to get the doors open if the 20k doesn't cover things. I have a friend who's an interior designer who's promised to help me get things painted/decorated etc. I do think the area is clamoring for a third space and I've budgeted about $40k/yr for a barista/helper so I should be okay as far as hitting me 25 orders/hr metric. if you try to resort to credit card debt you will fail 100%. There is like a zero % chance you'll be able to stay above water on the interest payments cutting this as close as you already are. If you can't get a business loan take it as a sign that this isn't going to work out.

Something I don't think you've considered is that you can fill the coffee with amphetamines to give your discounted folgers that extra kick and help to gently encourage repeat customers Build a waffle cart instead and save money by dumpster diving for old furniture to repurpose as the walls of your cart, call it upcycled waffles or something
